The key is to breath and focus on relaxing all your muscles. This kind of metal is heavy and fast, but you have to play like a feather. It takes surprisingly little effort to fret a note and pick a string, it's just a matter of training yourself to relax while doing it.
the problem is that if you wanna play it and get it to sound good you need to hit the strings quite hard anyway. I'm working on refining this technique and I've gotten pretty far. so you gotta relax every muscle in your entire body, but still hit the strings hard
@@adammelin2627 Hit the strings hard only on the moment of impact. Your hand doesn't need to be 100% tense for the entire time. It's a matter of relaxing and contracting at the right time. I've not played guitar for a while but can still nail the first half of the song pretty effortlessly doing exactly that. It's not about hitting soft, it's about economy of movement.
Some people on RU-vid are so dumb. Why would you ever give the thumbs down to this kick ass backing track? This guy is doing us all a favor by providing a perfect practicing tool. Thank you
it's cuz they didn't get their ultimate dream track served up to them on a silver platter...it cuz the drums and bass doesn't sound exactly like the record....the song king nothing comes to mind.....
Hi Tomas, if it isn't the downpicking hell to you, why don't you post a video on youtube were we can see your technique and what is the D.P. "hell" for you? I'd like to see what you mean for D.P. Hell... Maybe Tornado of Souls? Show us your supreme technique for downpicking... We all have to learn from you.
I can downpick this now. I remember being at 170BPM and 190BPM, but here I am, at full speed. All it takes it effort and consistency. I still consider myself a noob, and so if I can do it, anyone can lmao
James Hetfield is a guitar god and is criminally underrated. I tried doing all the down picking and I'm like how tf does he do this and I've been playing for 17 years.
sometimes when i can play this song i fell great, and play the guitar all day, but other times when i cant keep up with the speed and fuck up, i feel like i really suck at guitar
This was happening to me too...but first, before start to play this song...try to warm up..like 1 hour...just play songs faster and faster for 1 hour...then your enough warmed up to handle it...
I've been using this to learn the whole of master of puppets from a couple months ago and now I can play it start to finish all down picks pretty decently. sooo glad this vid existed.
Proper technique and not over stressing it, find the muscle that hurts when you downpick and then find an exercise to strengthen that muscle. Even if you have to lift weights at weird angles, as long as you don't overstress yourself you'll be chugging in no time.
PUSSIES!!!!!!! 😂😂😂 jk its a pain in the ass as well as the wrist, but once you find that groove and the control over your picking, this song becomes your bitch...until the fucking solo 😂
I was practicing the first 1 minute for about an hour, then my girlfriend comes in the room with a jar of pasta sauce she wanted me to open for her, needless to say, we had our pasta with ketchup :)
To the guys having trouble with this, ... remember you can click the three dots in the top right hand corner of the video when it's paused and slow the playback speed to 0.75 and it helps tremendously... then work your way up to full speed.
How the hell can it be that I get a fcking ad EVERY time in the middle of the solo?! This backing track is nearly unusable because of this! I mean I understand ads, but positioning them in the middle of the solo is so increadibly stupid...
Guys... In case you're not doing it yet... Arc your picking thumb... Like an OK shape with your hand. 👌 Take a look at how Papa Hetfield grabs it. That takes a lot of the stress away. The index and thumb nailtips should practically be touching. (Also, James uses both his index and middle finger, but I don't think that's actually necessary...)
Great song to work on your downpicking technique. The balance between speed, tone and right arm/hand tension is key. Start in a lower pace to warm up and find your balance, than gradually go to MOP original speed. No need to rush things, a little goes a long way. ROCK ON!!!
I CAN PLAY FUCKING TORNADO OF SOULS, BLACK STAR AND OTHER SIMILAR SONGS PROPERLY, BUT I CAN'T DOWNPICK THIS OVER 200 BPM, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!
if u watch alot of the concerts theres tons of times the bass player in metallica and many bands simply just stop playing for a few seconds for a quick break its natural and they can get away with it because most people dont even hear bass anyways over the guitars. unless it was the certain tracks where cliff played bass with fx on it like a guitar then those were pretty important
ZAFARIA kirk can downpick too lol. He doubles most of James’ playing anyway. Dont hate on kirk man, he is part of what made Metallica what they are today. His riffs, his solos, absolutely iconic. 80% of my fav Metallica riffs i found out were kirks. Watch the Andriy Vasylenko ”Riffs not written by James” and youll have some respect for the man.
When you're in the middle of a conference but you don't pay attention and forget that you're not home so you rip an epic fart and everybody stares at you
I think that this kind of songs are the better way to cross the line between thrash metal and death metal, just adding an up picking keeping the same attacks in the down picking and velocity at them, and finally you'll got that hard speed picking. I think if you play thrash classics like this one you have a good training. Try to play first this one and after vader.. It works. P.D: I'm not english sorry about my grammar or something like that.
