Everyone keeps going on about "it's about addiction". Yes it is, but what about the song? The fact it has complex time structures. About 50 riffs. Hetfields voice was shit hot back then and could strip paint. The riffs were hard and the solos were hard. Back when metallca were proper Metallica. They were great only for 10 years (83-93).

It's not really about "addiction." The entire album has a theme: you either own your own life and destiny or you let someone or something else own you. Every song on that album is about some other thing you could choose to control you into the grave. This song is about drugs, sure. But it's also the name of the album so it's more generic in both name and content. The rest of the album is about joining the military and letting them send you to die (Disposable Heroes) or letting religion control you (Leper Messiah) or checking in to the "health care" system (Sanitarium) or letting your irrational fears control you (Thing that should not be), etc.
