Imagine being a teen when this comes out. There's no internet, no cell phones, no PCs. Most radio stations would never play this at the time, or if they did it was after midnight on a Saturday in the special "adult songs only" hour. The only way to know about music like this was word of mouth, passing cassettes and flyers around. Good times!!

Exactly...I now have a 15yr old ..I try to explain to her about life back then.. Underground music scenes, going to clubs to catch new music and bands, because even college radio couldn't give you it all.
@NilMortifey

@@vampcatt To be fair even in the internet age there's a lot of underground music that only gets moved because of word of mouth. There's still bands out there that play local venues but don't get regional or national clout. There's bands who don't/can't tour but who release their music online (youtube etc) that have a core following but don't make it big or just do it "as a hobby", and a some that actually make it big and get labelled (Ghost etc). Word of mouth still exists online, It's just called "sharing", and there's a load of good bands who don't get shared.

The flow of the song takes you on the ride of a junkie. The tweaking, jerky, manic start. The sudden smoothing out of the high that slowly fades away back to the mania. I love it when the song flow mirrors the lyrics. Evenflow by Pearl Jam comes to mind.

This song is nothing but pure genius. It's written from 2 different perspectives at the same time: drug addict and drug itself. The music portion is from the perspective of the addict. The lyrical portion is from the perspective of the drug except for one small part. When the music starts picking back up again, the lyrics and music merge to both come from the perspective of the addict... Master, Master, where's the dreams that I've been after? Master, Master, you've promised only lies. Laughter, laughter, all I see or hear is laughter. Laughter, laughter, laughing at my cries. FIX ME! And that is when the perspectives separate and it's back to Master (drug of choice) and addict.

The drummer, Lars Ulrich, was inspired by the drummer for The Police, Stewart Copeland. When he does the pauses, he's offsetting the beat by one. The rest of the band continues on the standard, 1-2-3-4 pattern, but he's switched to 2-3-4-1. Then on the next pause he goes back in sync with the band. It is absolutely from the perspective of the drug or other source of addiction. Pay attention to when it's using I and Me, and what's being said with it. "Taste ME you will see More is all you need Dedicated to How I'm killing you" Basically try me and you'll be on the hook and want more. You want more of the me no matter what, even though I'm destroying you. Definitely the substance talking. Not the user, not the addiction. The substance personified, controlling you and laughing at you as you struggle.

I've always taken it that the start is the drug trying to lure, seduce, tempt you. Goading you. Then the music break where it gets mellow and gradually amps back up, is the high once you give in to the temptation. It gets more frantic and then you realize what it's done and you're yelling at the drug. Then the drug comes back in and torments you, boasts and brags about it. Absolutely my favorite Metalica song. Thanks for reacting to it. If you haven't done "One" you should (Official video please). And you have to do Enter Sandman (the live concert in Russia in 1991. It will blow your mind)

I think the reason it sounds "chopped" is because that's exactly how the riff is written. The end of every other bar is in 7/8, but it's not "written" in 7/8, Lars just kinda thought "hey wouldn't it be cool if we did this?" It's creates this frenetic start-and-stop sound which reflects the subject matter perfectly. Metallica really were on another level in the 80s

Bruh I was 14 working at a Kroger (Regional grocery store) and heard this song blasting out of a car in the parking lot. Raised in a baptist home, I had no exposure to secular music. I'd never heard metal before. I asked the guy what it* was and he took the tape (yes, tape) out and straight gave it to me. Changed my life.

This song is about addiction and the puppet master is the drug that takes controle of your life. Also the song is structured to reflect the way in which addiction takes hold of you with the high energy in the beginning, then you get that beautifully melodic section like the euphoric felling you get when high that transitions to that aggressive pounding beat of the need for more and the low of coming down. A beautifully arranged piece of music and a powerful message. Great to see you enjoying music and being open to new things. Us metalheads welcome any and all who are honest and good. Peace

I think it’s really cool seeing people who aren’t necessarily familiar with heavy music not only listening to it and seeing their reactions, but also getting it, understanding it and realizing and experiencing the different emotions. To some it’s just noise and screaming but when someone actually tries to take it all in and tries to feel the music, it’s kinda magical, I think it reminds us metal heads how we felt the first time we experienced a song and kinda brings it all back, it’s nostalgic and it’s really cool. Your daughter is beautiful, good on ya man, family makes life worth living! If you’re looking for something else to check out I’d highly suggest Pantera, seems like some other people have recommended them also. The first Pantera song I ever heard was Revolution Is My Name and I can remember it like it was yesterday, that one moment literally changed me and over time that band influenced me and had a significant and positive impact on my life. Another Pantera song I’d also highly recommend is Domination live in Russia, it really shows the power and influence those guys had and it kinda makes me giddy. Best of luck to ya man, god bless and rock on!

I'll never forget hearing Enter Sandman as a 6 year old in 91 at the state fair. My body and soul felt it and my mother... Was like "well shit." Up until then I had listened to patsy cline, Johny cash, old school country. CCR was the closest to rock I had gotten. But that day, a metal head was born and my mother knew it. God bless her too lol because she never said anything about me blasting Megadeth, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Manson, Zombie growing up other than coming to my room to tell me it was bedtime haha.

@@robberrie677 I'd usually advocate for an original release w/subtitled lyrics, and I do think the original version is a superior listen, but our man here is sharp enough to not be distracted by the additions to the video version - which I think has a more visceral impact by including the movie visuals and dialog added from which the song is inspired. At least so long as he knows the official release doesn't also have all the movie stuff. My $0.02 :)
