The crescendo of Metallica, monsters or rock, summer of 88 at Giants Stadium. I was 16 and near the very front. Only the young would survive. Many less fit people had to be thrown over stage and taken to the side for help. Those of us that could withstand the punishing metal mosh pit, 5 feet from our heroes, were rewarded for life. I'm 42 now and this still ranks up as one of the greatest days of my life. To get that close to Metallica before they took off for super stardom, unreal. What a day. I survived it. Wish their were more clips on here. For you younger fans, this is what the 80s was like. Weed, metal, no cops, easy access to the bands, and 80,000 of your best friends singing for whom the bells tolls in unison. God bless those days.
Bobby bones. I was 14 and me and some of my amigos where on the floor as well.. Awesome show, awesome day. Metallica and Scorpions rumbled the day. Only the fittest survived!!!!
This is THE BEST footage of this concert..I was there right against the front a little to the right of Kurt..Still got the ticket..Never forget this concert..9hrs I stayed against the front..
@COBWEBOWNZYA cool, but how did they make it to turn on? did they take the mesa circuitry and fit it with all the Marshall settings. Like when they go to turn on the Marshall head, they click on the Marshall on and off button and for their settings, they use the Marshall nobs all onthe outside. Do you think it was like they didn't want people to know what amp they were using? it was like a disguise.
OMG, I so remember that happening, that's why I was looking at this video. I met some guy in the mall and he told me it was him. All these years later I see it on film...nope haha definitely not him! My first concert ever at 16 y/o
amazing how many fans say that the 21st century FTB is the best recordings..how can you prefer vs 87-89? James was singing with intensity back then..their tone was better then, played faster, etc
i saw this show in maine, kingdom come opened up the show. i also saw metallica in 1983 at a small club with about 100 people there. a band called raven opened up for metallica in 83. i am 48, i would never trade the 200 concerts i have seen, just to be 25 again. starting with kiss in 1977, saw ozzy with rhoades in 1981. def leppard opened for ozzy. van halen in 1981, 82, 83 and 1984. judas priest 4 or 5 times mercyful fate in 1984 and venom in 1986, both rare shows. i saw almost everyone. 80s#1
I saw them that year in LA at the Coliseum. They were the only good band on the line up. There was a fucking riot when they came on stage. There was 80,000 people there and all of the people in the back rushed to the front. Security guards were getting hit with chairs and they shut it down until the crowd calmed down. The band just sat on stage waiting for about 20 minutes.
@steve1233302 it was awesome! after the show when I was still in the crowed after every one left, he said "hey arn't you the guy who jumped up on stage during Creeping Death?" and I say "HELL YEAH!". Than we went and got some drinks and now we jam on the weekends at the MetallicA HQ ever since xD lol.
The 2 most important tours Metallica ever did was this Van Halen tour and the tour with Guns N Roses. The VH tour sucked in all the rock and hard rock fans who discovered that day that these guys are one of the tightest live bands ever. There form of Metal is more rock oriented and it can appeal to everyone. Then the Guns tour simply let the world know that Guns is not the biggest band or the best that it was in fact Metallica. They blew Guns off the stage at that show.
SpikeMichaels - You can't be serious? Back when this was happening the biggest news to come from the whole Monsters of Rock show that year was how Metallica out shined everyone with the possible exception of Van Halen (who was at their peak). Your example that Dokken was good is because they were all over MTV??? So was Michael Jackson, Madonna, New Kids on the Block, Wham, and Tears for Fears. And to top off your comments - you said you were searching for Dokken videos from this time but could only find Metallica??? I think that pretty much sums up who made an impression at the show and who faded away.
SpikeMichaels - also, check out Wikipedia for monsters of rock 1988. It speaks of Dokken being booed and not matching the intensity of Metallica. In the description it describes Van Halen and the scorpions as co-headliners and list the opening acts as Metallica, Dokken, and Kingdom come - in that order. Here's a quote from a major publication after the Akron show - "So, of course, do Metallica, whose hair-raising performances in Akron are second only to Van Halen’s despite their slot right after Kingdom Come". History has spoken, my friend, and it all points that Metallica kicked Dokken's ass. And, by the way, Metallica still is. They are not playing state fairs and casinos. But hey…they were played on MTV and the radio… so they got that going for them.
I was at this show. 16 years old. They introduced Harvester of Sorrow as a new song. The crowd tried to get 4 girls to go topless as VH waited for darkness to headline. Great show!
I remember seeing this tour on an absolutely sweltering day in Akron when I was 14. My older brother was there for Van Halen. But I was there for THIS.
I was also at this show. It was a Van Halen / Scorpions crowd but many were there to see Metallica, who ruled the stage. I don't know how many 50,000+ type stadium shows they had done before this, but Giants Stadium was shaking when they were on. Scorpions were great - but the infamous garbage wave across the stadium took place during their set, the upper deck basically threw everything they had down to the lower deck. Was not good. Dokken had to play between Metallica and the Scorps, tough spot for them but they held their own. By the time Van Hagar hit the stage it was almost an afterthought. Thanks for posting this!
I wish there was footage from the LA Coliseum show, where there was a 20,000 person stage rush that started when Metallica hit the stage. I was in that stage rush, dodging shrapnel from shredded plastic chairs in the entire floor section. Eventually, riot police had to come in and stop the show for a bit, if I recall.
Yeah the notes can be replicated by ear which is testimony to the man's melodic sense but at speed it's a serious challenge then that chromatic run in the middle of the melody sandwich is crunchy and almost impossible to replicate and the killer climax just cinches it: a truly great guitar piece
I was at this show...stoned off my ass and getting pelted with toilet paper. Down on the floor was general admission and people were jumping down and rushing the stage. The lineup was Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions and Van Halen (w/Sammy Hagar). Killer 12 hr. day!
if you remember everything about every concert then you were not really there! the party in the parking lot was almost as fun as the show. guys selling bootleg t- shirts outside. another guy saying with a low voice as u walked by him, hey man need acid? how about speed? lol. i always would sleep over night at the ticket office to get great seats, thats what made the show even better having 2nd row on the floor! seeing venom in 1986 was great, the possessed tour, right before their break up!
@metalhead9167 DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE GOD. PLEASE TELL THEM I SAID HELLO. my name is ian, i have been a super fan since 7th grade and i really want to meet them, im the best guitarist in my area and im trying to get better so my band will get famous enough to meet them! ive dreamt about meeting kirk for years! and im 16! is there any way to meet them or call them and say hi????? please respong and tell me, any way at all bro, ill do anything!
@dusted04 i'm a BIG fan also, and i'm trying to find out who's jubilee is that. I really love the jubilee series, and that's why I want to know, wish I could just go back in time and before James, Kirk, and Jason hit the stage, I would say Hey! who's jubilee is that? I heard as time went on, James didn't like the sound of Marshall's is that true?
@VH5150MetallicaFan Im not sure how the circuitry worked with the marshalls, i believe they used them because they already had a live rig of marshalls and didnt want to waste them, that or mes circuitry was alot cheaper than the amps themselves
that guy almost made it on stage if he did he would have probably high fived the band unlike nowadays where the band members have to wonder if a person does make it on stage is that person gonna start shooting
Look at 0:09 to 0:23 and throughout the whole video, There is a Marshall Jubilee on James or Kirks rig, Was James or Kirk using it? It's under the Marshall on top that I think is a JCM 800.
@dusted04 yeah I know Kirk used 800 plus mesa's but, I don't see the mesa's. Good question, was Slash really on the bill? with a good guess, do you think the jubilee was a 25/50 or 25/55?
@VH5150MetallicaFan Well they could have borrowed a amp for there rig on this speciffic concert, but i think its just most likely part of the backline with a mesa pre amp in it
@steve1233302 yeah dude i'm just fucking with ya, i wish i knew them too but thats is really not me i was just kidding. this video is like 15 years older than me.lol
@COBWEBOWNZYA if they did use the Jubilee, do you know if it was the 25/50 or the 25/55? and I have no clue but, who do you think used the jubilee? was it James or Kirk?
Who is that walking in to the side of the stage at :15-:30 just as the band was coming on? Looks like either Mick Brown or George Lynch from Dokken? If so, no doubt they were saying to themselves I can't believe we have to go on AFTER these guys...
WE WANT MORE FOOTAGE FROM THE SHOW! I have been searching for aa high def show of this concert! Thank You for posting this! please never get rid of it!!! upload more footage!
