Used to be pro-death penalty. Two people changed my mind: Joshua Milton Blahyi and David Berkowitz... aka General Butt Naked and the Son of Sam/.44 caliber killer. No one is too bad for forgiveness, and even the worst can change with God. Seriously, i HIGHLY recommend The Redemption of General Butt Naked, a documentary on Blahyi. That is my religious viewpoint, but people often tell me to keep religion out of politics, so i need a political view divorced from my religious view. My mind is not totally made up on this. 1 practicality: in our society, there is no need to end someone's life to remove the threat they pose to society. 2 false convictions: i don't want to be party to killing an innocent, even at one or two removes. However... Sori, you say there is nothing your children could possibly do to make you think they should be executed, but we are told to love others as we love ourselves... is there anything YOU could possibly do that would male you feel it appropriate for you to be executed? I feel the same as you about the "killing those that deserve it is something i could do", and so when i say that there is certainly something i could do that would make me nod and say, "yes, kill me... it is for the best", maybe you can empathize. (I haven't, i just understand that i have the capacity) So... i cannot be wholeheartedly against the death penalty. Lastly, there is a story about a WWI French general seeing captives after a failed mutiny, who were set to be executed. Seeing they looked dejected and ashamed, he said to stand tall because, "in this way, too, you serve France," ( being executed as a deterrent to future mutinies) There is some truth to that. (Though we do need to weigh individual vs society)

Forget the moral arguments. It's impossible for anyone to agree with the state sentencing and carrying out death sentences. For one reason and one reason only......... they DO and HAVE executed innocent people. 1 innocent person put to death is 1 too many.

"there is no need to end someone's life to remove the threat they pose to society." oh really? because we have prisoners living in our prisons on taxpayers dollars for the rest of their lives (like Charles Manson), who just become more and more hardened. and now with the virus, the dumbasses in the state government want to set them free because of your same line of reasoning: "uwu, they're gonna get the totally not made in china virus", and they're going to kill and rape and steal yet again. consider also if you let criminals live, the cult of personality that grows around them: Manson for one, or his norwegian counterpart varg for another. if they remain, they get to keep spreading their vitriol, thumbing their nose at the system, and proving that there is no such thing as justice.

Ride the lightning, bring back a lot of memories. I discovered Metallica back in 91-92 when the Black Album was released. Back then, we didn't have any money so I was not able to buy records or cassettes. I got a job during summer vacations and with part of the money I earned, I bought the Ride Lightning cassette tape on a garage sale. Oh man, I was a happy child. Keep in mind by that time, I only knew the singles "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven" since I heard them on the radio. From the first notes of Fight Fire with Fire to the amazing The Call of Ktulu, I was blown away. I was not expecting that raw power, that energy, that heaviness. It became my favorite record until I heard Master of Puppets. But that my friends, it's another story.
@plantdesigns7889
@plantdesigns7889 4 года назад
Same here. I had heard the radio singles from the black album. One afternoon, the guys across the street were sitting in the front yard with a cooler full of beer and a boombox. They were playing random rock and metal songs. Suddenly I hear this bell ring out a couple times and this riff kicks in. I was like what the hell is that? My introduction to For Whom The Bell Tolls. A few years later when I had the money and CDs had come out, I bought this album. That's when I went from listening to Poison and Bon Jovi to Thrash Metal lol

Metallica were very controversial in those days. In the Metallica movie "through the never" Kirk gets a Tesla coil on stage for the song that electricity comes out. Kirk got the title "ride the lightning from a Steven king book. Dave mustane has a writing credit for the song because they used one of his things he wrote when he was in Metallica

As I was born in USSR in my childhood i was very often thinking what would I do in some situations that happened in WW2. Those were thoughts about numerous terrible situations that were happening almost each day at that war. And these thoughts gave a lot of moments of feeling so small and weak, because i coudlnt imagine if i could be a hero to sacrifice myself in certain circumstances. Ltater, as I grew older i realized that war is in some "grey" area where you shouldnt use your imagination thinking what will happen to you or what will you do ou there in that "grey" area. All I try to say that imaginning what is worse - electric chair, lethal injection or any other form of death penalty lies in the same "grey" area. I think that the only way to be is thinking that "when or if i get there - i will know". In all other case - you cant know. "Grey" area can be explored only when you are inside that "grey" area.

Metallica was one of my "gateway" bands into metal. Naturally there are bands I enjoy a lot more now, BUT Ride the Lightning is still a legit top 10 album for me. It was a game changer, adding a little more finesse and craftsmanship to the already competitive thrash scene that was pushing booundaries of speed and technique... I also like that it has a bit of that regal nature of Master, sometimes is classy but at other times isn't taking itself too seriously and just rocks out... Title track is my favorite.

Ride The Lightning is the first Metallica album I ever listened to back in 1987 at nine years old and it blew my mind at how aggressive and heavy it was. I have never listened to anything like that before and I loved it immediately. That is what I have always loved about Hard Rock/Heavy Metal music was the heaviness and aggression. All these years later Ride The Lightning is still my favorite Metallica album. I love every song on it, including Trapped Under Ice and Escape. I am happy that Metallica finally have remastered their first four albums a few years ago because they were way overdue . The first four studio albums have always been my favorites and they sound better than ever now that they have been remastered. They also did big boxsets for each one with alot of unreleased live songs and demos but they are expensive. They only did deluxe editions for Master Of Puppets and And Justice For All which is a more reasonable price. I wish that the first two also got deluxe edition releases. I agree with Vin that it is amazing the quality of music that Metallica did on the Ride The Lightning album at how young they were. Metallica in my opinion is one band that were at their peak of creativity in the first ten years of their career. They still made great music after the first four albums , but it was never as amazing for me. Great review of this song. I agree with Vin also on that I could not even be the person to pull the switch to an electric chair. I could never do it because I have no right to end anyone's life. The only way I could ever be capable of killing someone is for self defense.

It's foreign to me that you saw a microphone and then realized it's an electric chair. Over the last 30 years I've owned multiple copies of RTL in multiple formats and never thought that it could be anything other than an electric chair. But it does look like a microphone. And it makes me wonder how many other people think it's a microphone. It's very odd to see a very familiar picture for 30 years and then have the processing of that image turned on its side. Thank you for that.

Late...but Ride the Lightning is a taken from Stephen King's "The Stand," where King uses it to refer to the electric chair. In the book, a man charged with murder is discussing his options with his lawyer, and asks what happens if SCOTUS rejects his appeal, to which his lawyer responds "Why, then you go on to Death Row at state prison and just enjoy all that good food until it's time to ride the lightning." Hammett was reading The Stand while they were recording Kill Em All, saw that phrase, and mentioned it to James, who loved it.

I remember one time when I was about 16 me and my dad were driving and listening to this on the highway. As we were getting off, the song was turned up very loud and he was so engulfed into the song that he almost ran straight into an oncoming fire truck. Honestly one of the most frightening times of my life, and one of the reasons I no longer listen to Metallica on the highway.

My introduction to Metallica was this album. It started with a question about a metal up your ass shirt. My friend didn't have his "Kill em All" cassette handy, but we listened to Ride The Lightning. This was all a few weeks before Master of Puppets came out. Those 2 albums are still my favorite Metallica albums. Songs are amazing.

See THIS is the kind of subject matter in songs I love hearing your thoughts on. I don't really have as much time to listen to the discussions after like I used to, so I'm more selective about the discussions I stick around for, but this is a good one! I don't remember you guys ever talking about the death penalty, so this is an interesting one for me! Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to plug in my suggestions, as usual. 😁 Band: Demon Hunter Song: Cross to Bear Demon Hunter is my favorite Metal band and I think you need to revisit them, especially since you loved the last heavy song you did. This song is one of their most aggressive and I think the premise is quite interesting. The vocalist said it's about how people use the expression "it's my cross to bear" and that he hates how people use it so lightly without fully understanding the weight of it. Band: Exodus Song: Sealed With a Fist It's about domestic abuse and it's my personal favorite by them. It's got groove and the lyrics are cleverly written. It always puts a smile on my face because it has a happy ending of sorts. Band: Lamb of God Song: Embers This one, based on my understanding, is about the loss of a newborn. I read an article that had a statement from the guitarist saying it was about his daughter. It's beautiful, tragic, and hopeful at the same time. Band: Iced Earth Song: Damien It's about, well, the son of the Devil. Horror Show was an album about different horror icons and legends like Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, and Damien. This song is particularly memorable because of its opening bass line, the choir that sings, the crushing riffs, and the "colorful" words against Christ used in Damien's perspective. It's an epic song and I'm morbidly curious to see the looks on your faces after hearing certain lines. Much love! - Manny
