I'm old enough to remember when MOP was Metallica's new album, this song has always been one of my favorites. Cassette tapes were still an extremely common format at that time and bands had to consider how they would arrange their songs within the limitations of this format. For a band like Metallica, it was important to have a strong song occupying the first slot on "Side 2" and Disposable Heroes, having such great riffs, was a solid choice to kick off the 2nd half of the album. Having a kick-ass song at the beginning of the 2nd side actually provided an incentive to flip the cassette, lol. I would've continued to listen regardless, but these were things that bands had to take into account back then. A weak 2nd side could conceivably mean that only half of an album ever really got much attention when dealing with records and cassettes.

Leper Messiah is my favorite of the album and I personally believe it’s more underrated or overlooked song than the rest of the album. Riff is also pretty bad ass. When I finally got to see Metallica live and Battery came on, a mosh started in front of me and I jumped in and I loved it. Gets me going.

I first saw Metallica when I was 17, it was literally their last show of the world magnetic tour and up until that point they had a pretty stock standard set list but it being the last show of the massive tour (3 years I believe) they pulled out some songs they wouldn’t usually play. Of wolf and man, leper messiah, trapped under ice, call of ktulu, unforgiven III (live debut) and disposable heroes. Such a killer set and unbelievable show 🤘😝🤘

I understand that it can be confusing always having to refer to chords by what they sound like and then switching to how they are played on the guitar... but I think in the context of instructing guitar students, it's best to stick to HOW they are played on the guitar, in relation to standard tuning. The Tuning down a 1/2 step thing is what I'm referring to. It's probably just best to always refer to the chords in standard tuning. That is just my opinion. Love your videos. I agree. When it comes on, I always stop whatever I’m doing and blast/head bang to Disposable Heroes. However I would also include on this list everything Metallica recorded before Jethro Tull won a Grammy.

I don't think any songs from the first 4 albums are overlooked when compared to songs from death magnetic and hardwired (when specifically focusing on thrash metal)

Wasn't a fan of this when I heard Puppets in the beginning. Was and still am a Leper Messiah guy. I have gained a greater appreciation of this having served in the Navy from 94 to 98. Having served with Marines on ship and having Army friends after plus understanding what my Dad went through in 'Nam made this a better song for me.

I think their most overlooked song is "Ride the Lightning ", it's an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G song that has EVERYTHING!!!!

I had the lyrics of this tune written in sharpie on my college apartment wall. It’s the song that taught me to chugg tight riffs! It’s got it all. Fast downpicking intro, chugging, alternate thrash riffage and a great bridge groovy riff. Bot to mention the solo! Track 5 on the greatest thrash record of all time!

I used to love the mosh in my more supple days. I saw Papa Het and the boys in Adelaide when they toured Death Magnetic. Very happy to have the seats I did. There was a dad in front of us taking his kids to see Metallica soo frikkin awesome.

This is the song I gravitated to when I was 14 in 1985. It has a double meaning. It is angry song talking about his parents too. James also warred at home with his strict upbringing. The lyrics are deeply filled with metaphor. "barking of machine gun fire, does nothing to me now" Being screamed and yelled at until you're numb to it. "You will do what I say, when, I say..."

Disposable Heroes is a fan favorite for sure. They played it a lot during the black album tour. I would say none of their 80s songs are particularly overlooked except Escape. Those albums are the holy grail of fucking metal. I would say Prince Charming on ReLoad is one their most overlooked songs. Great groove, good lyrics, catchy all around tune and never played live.
