Sully is nervous, his body language is very in "Awe" of the moment. Rightfully so, he's said Hetfield is one if his main vocal influences and it shows. Wish they would tour together again!
Sully's living proof that powerful things come in small packages. He has a lot of power in that voice, which is why that huge vein pops out on the side of his neck. I've been listening to both for about 8 years now, & the one thing I love about both of them, is that their voices never seem to change.
What? No fucking way, Erna just scream and i really dont like his voice, never compare him with the mighty hetfiedl, even nowadays hetfield sings better than him... Dont saying about the old hetfield´s voice, ´cause he´ll crush erna like an ant...
bispower6 Why you so angry? Godsmack is totally up to par with Metallica musically and in talent. Metallica, as much as I love them, are old and just can't do it anymore. Godsmack is less mainstream and stuff, but don't count Sully out so quickly. He's one of the most talented but underrated musicians out there. Very similar to James. He plays drums, guitar, and sings with a very similar style and sound to Hetfield. I can guarantee James would gladly admit that Sully is as good or better than him at singing.
i saw Metallica in 04 and Godsmack opened. I stood right next to sully and i couldn't help but think his harley davidson gear was bought at kids are us............I was shocked..........that big ass voice out of that midget
Chris W HAHAHAH, hi Chris. I just saw your comment and it got me into a big laughter. That was a good one !! :) "Big voice out of that midget", LOLLLLL !!!!!!! BURN !!! :) Happy Holidays fellow rock fans.
Metallica is my favorite band and has been since I first heard them. ( I'm 68 years old so it's been a very long time! ) Sully and God smack have also been a favorite for MANY years!
ha i love how Sully looks up at James every time after "Im your eyes" kinda like a "did i do it right?'' expression....both killer singers and even better live
Metallica and Godsmack are great heavy bands. But James Hetfields voice in in justice for all and the black album, i think it was way heavier and had more rasp sound to it then sully. hetfield is old.. you sing like that for 20 years its bound to go out. But sully has an amazing voice too in his own way. Heavy songs sound the best when singers have that heavy rasp like sully does and james DID. I bet sully had a blast singing one of his favorites songs from his idols. The two best heavy metal singers in my opinion.
Thats why it doesn't work now when Metallica makes fast, thrashy songs. . James doesnt have much aggression in his voice like he did from kill em all, all the way through the black album. Chuck Billy from Testament, Mark Osegueda from Death Angel, and Tom Araya from Slayer are a few that come to mind that still have the aggression in their voice. And thats why the "thrash" sound still works for those bands. Yeah I know this is a James Hetfield (Metallica), Sully Erna video. I'm just saying. lol
Varcolaci Valiapira i understand where you are coming from. but people are people.. some people can sing rasp heavy notes untill they get old as fuck i get that haha. But in James Hetfields time, i think he had the best sounding voice in metal. And thats just my opinion. But a three year long tour of almost playing every other day playing live music like they did... youre voice is bound to go out.. the fact that they still put out great music i think is awesome. I know that tom araya might still have his voice but metallica i think still brings the best songs. I would check out metallicas 2014 shows. James is still sounding pretty good. But it is what it is.
actually hetfield can sing EXACTLY how he used to in the black album and justic etc but he just cannot do it on 300 shows.they are the ultimate road dogs.he blew his voice out too many times so he has to choose his times he lets it all hang out.lately, like on craig ferguson he sang like the old james.its just not easy to sing that way all the time every show.its just how it is like or or leave it,its been stated as fact many times but people keep saying he is washed up.hes far from it
evan c well put...Metallica is and always will be the kings of metal...I don't care what anybody says....say they went soft in the 90s? pssh whatever still good ass music...a band should never be eternally bound to just one style of guitar or singing or whatever its good to get out there n flex your muscles every once in awhile...OH AND PLUS, how many bands are out there that are going on their 35th STRAIGHT year? drawin blanks aint ya? yup so obviously they are doing something right ya dig
SuLLy: - Are you leaving me with tha the high harmony'' Haha... JameS: - .....¬¬ SuLLy: - ♪♫ I'm you dream, I'm your eyes, I'm your pain...♫♪ JameS: - Yes! SuLLy: - Ok... Both: Kkkk kKkk KkKk kk kKkk... I Laughed!!! XD
Lead-singer and founder of Godsmack, a great drummer too from Boston. Also plays professional poker all the time. That being said, James and Sully teaming up on this song sounds great... wish I could have been there!
And now he's gone out and purchased a drag car ... which he did that a long long time ago but has just got back in it last year .. So Keep your eyes on Uglymug racing
Mr. Sully must've felt amazing doing this, never-mind having James Hetfield himself shout out "One hundred and fifty percent pure respect right here!" about him.
5 years later I know. TLDR: yes it is fairly normal for singers. Especially while practicing it's all to do with tension while pushing your voice to reach a higher pitch because generally (although not always) you are lacking in breath support and control. In this instance he is trying to figure out exactly where and how to sing the harmony and also where to breathe plus he's sitting down and kind of hunched over which compresses the diaphragm which will make it much harder to generate the power and breath needed to hit the bit he's aiming for which is putting more strain and tension on his vocals, With practice which he obviously would've done a fair bit more of before the show all of those issues are worked out and rectified so the vein wouldn't be as prominent in the actual performance although sully does actually push his vocals alot when singing anyway so you can see the vein pop out in quite alot of his songs and live performances.
Anyone else get the vibe that Metallica was super influenced by Godsmack during the St. Anger days? I even remember seeing a Sully Erna poster behind Lars' kit in SKoM.
Totally awesome, Metallica was always my favorite. Still luv them but godsmack took over a lot of that for a while. Metallica will always be a well respected band though. Sully and James together. Priceless. Luv it. Great job guys. Sad but true baby😎
+evan c This, Wherever I may roam, Sandman, dont tread on me? Nothing else matters? THE FUCKING UNFORGIVEN?! Those songs just.... they are fucking crazy
This probably has something to do with radio overplay but I would never voluntarily listen to any song from the black album. Maybe wherever I may roam.
Not that I value either over the other; but it feels like Sully is an actual musician. He's trying to get the song right, and down - while James isn't really all focused on what's going on. I know he's suppose to play, but does the guitar in the rehearsal have to be louder, and drown out Sully? I've been in this position - it's difficult to accomplish anything when there's too much backdrop, and not enough focus. Whatever though - it's good non the less.
Ozzy and the group are extremely close as well. If your basing your judgment of character on a 'reality' TV show, then you are probably sadly mistaken. Much like a few of their interviews have stated, the group is/has tapped into something that is outworldly (Ozzy).
How is sully a better singer James has more power in his voice and when he blew it out he went through weeks of training in a few days I dont think sully could do that and any true metallica fan would know that james is a better singer
I'm as true a Metallica fan as anyone and even I can admit that James has destroyed his voice. He uses tons of gimmicks now to get through songs. Anyone who saw this tour saw Metallica getting blown off the stage by Godsmack.
I saw Godsmack open for MetallicA on October 17, 2004 in DC. They were so badass...I am a diehard MetallicA fan and after that night am a diehard of fan of Godsmack too. I have so much respect for Sully for sharing his passion and intense love for music.
6:52 made me giggled a little bit. And then I realized, I will not as great and awsome as a singer as James and Sully. So then I stopped laughing... :D
Only way to make this anyway better after 10+ years of thinking, is Corey Taylor, Ronnie Radke, Lacey Nicole Sturm (Flyleaf), and Amy Lee. Of course Chester Bennington, if ect others. It's either or, too many makes too much. Need combos for style points, not all at once.
I'm an angel and saved through the sinners prayer and born sinner so tyvm for the music that tape could be actual a tail ...only a friend tells you to take tape off your dupa I love each if you and find one thing special in each of you that I find as an attribute unique only to you as a more human than human type of individuals without comparing you to another individuals then only sad but true is dopplegangers where one person resembles someone you loved and lost in the physical realm but never in the soul and heart and spirit so 🔑💚search for what ever you lack yet need ...im rambling on cause I'm a huge fan of venting and yinz ....😈😇🌹💯✔🤘🤙🤗💋
I like watching this video. I'm such a 3 but I can not help but be attracted to Sully. Totally different than me but there's inside chemistry on something. Which I don't understand.
