James Eaton yea I agree I mean James tone has been monstrous since master, but justice had (IMO) more brutal tone then the black album. I really think bob just helped with creative direction asking James if he would want to try that riff with another guitar ect stuff like that James layered what like 8 something guitar tracks on sad but true that’s incredible. @Syklonus
@Syklonus 2 года назад
@@oldmatevb No it wasn't. James isn't an engineer, and a recorded tone is more than just dialing in the controls on an amp. The tone on this album was a blend of Mesa and Marshall amps slaved to each other and then processed with a mixing desk after careful mic positions on the cabinet. Bob Rock was absolutely the guy who made this happen.

Came here for 1 thing: rhythm guitar @chorus. I love Kirk’s part there, but I wanted to hear clearly what James was doing in the pre-chorus, “I’m your dream...” that’s the most complicated part to hear in the mix.

The guitar used in this song is a Gretsch baritone w/ bigsby. Killer and unexpected tone

I wonder how this would sound like with Kirk's tone as the main track
@ESPLTD782
@ESPLTD782 8 лет назад
Kirk didn't play any rhythm tracks at all. But maybe you mean like his actual tone he likes for himself, I stand corrected. Kirk likes a lot less gain on shit, treble kinda high.

I don't think people understand the true heaviness of this riff. Wanna know why it hits so hard? Listen to the bass track to this song, and you'll know why.

If I stand corrected this is kirks track because of that chorus while James keeps up that chug we all know and love I can tell it’s double tracked but kirks parts are louder so for the verses it’s both and the chorus and solo it’s Kirk
@TeeDub96
@TeeDub96 3 года назад
This is James and then the kirk part is spliced in and James' rhythm during the chorus is cut out and I believe you can find it with with vocal track.

You guys arguing over the layers/dubs/tracks: Rhythms are at most quad tracked, usually just a right, then a left. And there is absolutely a possibility to have 29 tracks of guitar in a song. In many of my Pro Tools' sessions, I have over 120 tracks of different instruments/vocals so 29 wouldn't be unheard of for guitars for a guitar-oriented band such as Metallica. If you, as a band, want to do things really well and hone your sound, there is NO way to just plug in and get your tones through one sound/amp/take, you have to multi-track....
@billbatenborough3451
@billbatenborough3451 9 лет назад
Jason Ragland they can deffo be more than quad tracked, if u havent tried that already id definitely advocate it
@ragzy02
@ragzy02 9 лет назад
Bill Batenborough Hmm. I would guess that maybe those single string rhythm patterns that Metallica does are probably layers upon layers, but things get super mushy, even when played very tightly, when quad tracking full on barre chords. Again though, I'm thinking maybe tracks like .....And Justice for All may have had lots of takes because it's more of a single string rhythm progression.
@billbatenborough3451
@billbatenborough3451 9 лет назад
Jason Ragland i get what ur saying, but theres like no bar chords in any of mettalica's sound, its all power chords and such, i have a 12 tracked thing as a guitar demo ive done and it sounds great, the trick is for the individual guitar track to have not so much bass, so that when all the frequencies add up theres just the right amount at the end, thats what gives the mush
@billbatenborough3451
@billbatenborough3451 9 лет назад
Jason Ragland Although u r right looking at it theres little pick sound, but the actual overal thing sounds great
