Hey guys! As promised for a long time, I rerecorded my piano cover The Call of Ktulu one more time. The first video (back in 2016) was good - from my own performance. But during the day of recording basically everything went wrong - main camera didn't work, horrible lightning, off sync video. Still 25000 views today and a big hype in 2018. Happens when you record after midnight :-) I hope you guys enjoy this new video. I must say this song lends itself to classical style so well. Cliff Burton the original author of this was classically trained and was very well versed in music theory. He's the reason Metallica was so good in their first 3 albums. He was gone too soon but the music we did get was beautiful
Always interesting to hear people refering to "classical style" or something similar. Being a classically trained pianist myself, I don't really see a classical style in Metallica. They are very melodious, especially compared to a band like Slayer, as an example. And the individual instruments all have their own touch and importance. That's where it stops for me - but that's just my opinion. Metallica works amazingly on the piano, that's why I cover them so much.
@@YannickStreibert Your comment sounds kind of weird to me, cause I've heard from another classically trained musician that some Metallica songs or at least part of them have classical features, as well as the structure of some songs like Orion, or Fade to Black for example, are similar to classical pieces. Sounds like you're biting the hands that feed you.
Hi, sorry if I gave you a bad impression with my replies. I am not trying to put somebody down, I just love these comments to share different opinions and mine mostly differs a bit as you might have seen. I personally don't know any classical pieces that Metallica used in their songs, but bands like Symphony X used them a lot. If you know any, let me know. I'm glad to learn something new😊
@@YannickStreibert Elizabeth Zharoff, Opera singer, mentioned on her videos/reactions of Fade to Black, Master of Puppets and No Leaf Clover that the intro and interlude, and the structure in general in the first one has very classic features, the medium section on the second one as well, and in No Leaf Clover there's plenty of similarities with classic compositions. Michael Kamen, conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra also mentioned on the video of the making of S&M part 1, how he looked for the Metallica songs with more classical sound to be selected for the concert.
The best metallica album. James writes the body of every album, it has some of Cliff Lars and Kirks best writing credits and most importantly SOME OF MUSTAINE. God i wish they still wrote together. Such wonderful music
Hi! Sorry, RU-vid did not send me any notification. I am very happy and would feel very honored to see you playing it :-) Thank you very much!! And sorry for the pages. I know my arrangements take a lot of space sometimes haha
I found this video 1 year ago and you still had around the same amount of subscribers, I know your fame will come I just don’t know when! Can I suggest a system of a down song? Toxicity would be a fun one
Thanks for coming back! Actually, if we talk about the last 365 days, I gained around 400 more subscribers but what you say is right, it's not really "exploding" in my opinion. I can try, always thought of doing it. Just so many other people already did great covers of it, I don't think it will get much of a chance. Stay tuned!
@@YannickStreibert when you put it like that, I guess you’re right, some of their songs have really been covered many times. I believe that the overdid songs are key to success, however, and when people see you do the cliches like toxicity and chop suey then they will take notice of your other covers. If I’m being completely honest, I’d love to see lonely day by SOAD, as it’s a perfect piano piece, though I feel like chop suey or toxicity may benefit you more in terms of popularity.
I would love to. But for a piano cover, there is too much going on. The poem in the middle, the fading of instrumental parts into each other, etc. That works on recording, but I have no clue how to create a good sounding cover out off it. Tried it in the past and was really not satisfied with it sadly
@@YannickStreibert oh yeah it's a complicated song that true but it's so beautiful and emotional always when I listen to the middle section (the non distortion part) it always tears me up I don't know why but it does and I'm only 20 years old (was born in 2001)
It is a super amazing song, no question about that! The problem is also not the technical part, it's not difficult to play. But bringing it all together is the issue. Maybe I will go for it in the future :)
Yannick Streibert I have not been able to tackle anything hard for the last 3 years. My priority right now is work and get my first apartment then I can say No to work and live my life again.
Hard to say. If you gave me the sheet music and asked me to play it, I would say maybe 2 weeks. But I wrote the cover and practiced in the process, which was around 2 months.
@@YannickStreibert Thank you for playing that song so well sir. I've never given piano music much of my time throughout my life. But it IS an extraordinary instrument that requires great skill and that I respect.
@@YannickStreibert Not really. I have an electric and an acoustic guitar. Never put in the time to master it. Can play some things by ear, lol. I love music though.
What an amazing suggestion. Never thought of it! Solitude would be the song to go for me. Totally love it. I don't think Born Again would work so much though. I am currently working on Sanitarium by Metallica, but I think Solitude could be the next one afterwards.
Sorry, I'm late too. Can you give me a time in the video? So I am 100% what you mean. Maybe I made a mistake, I always buy the original score and work with that so it's quite interesting to know what could have gone wrong :)
@@YannickStreibert it’s 0:56 in your video and 1:00 in say here (original track): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t1RTgznup5c.html So I mean the very last note of the tune. It’s such a tiny detail so it doesn’t really matter I guess, but I always felt it gave some kind of a change in mood before progressing to the next (every time more loud) phase.
@@YannickStreibert Nah. It’s just that, back when I was learning to play the piece myself, I kept playing it just the way you did, which is like the intuitive to do it, right, and it kept bugging me because i felt something was off but couldn’t pin it down. It wasn’t until I actually listened to every note at 0.5x speed (lol) that I got that figured out. So I guess that’s the only reason my ear noticed it now. As I said, it’s an awesome cover you made!
Thank you very much! Symphony X is my favorite band along with Dream Theater! I love that song. It is quite difficult to combine the instruments though. Tried it in the past and failed to make it sound ok (for my personal taste). Thanks for the suggestion!
Yannick Streibert no problem man , yeag i know its a difficult song but i saw you played sea of lies Maybe you rerecord it again cuz the other video had bad sound quality Thank you for the great content ❤️
@@silverstone3228 haha, oh yes! Recorded it with my (old) Yamaha piano, had no clue how to record the wave on my computer, used my very bad mobile to make an audio recording while lying on the floor without making further sounds to disturb the already bad audio from the speakers of my piano. Good times! Thank you very much 😊 I will try my best. A long time wish is the record "The divine wings of tragedy"
Seeing a lot of kudos to Cliff Burton (RIP) to this Metallica song, but let’s not forget that Dave Mustaine was one of the main contributors to this song (arpeggios in the intro are the exact chord structures used in the intro to Hangar 18 by Megadeth)…..give credit where it is due….
