I'm not sure it necessary falls on the designers. When it came out I think they were still playing catch-up to the manga, and so had to work around that, and Kazuki Takahashi wasn't exactly writing with the intent of designing cards for actual play at that point. Granted, I still feel like they could have done more (honestly, just giving it the Metalmorph effect wouldn't have been enough to make it good, but it would have at least not really punished you for making it), but I can see why they felt like they couldn't.

Yeah, plus the 500 didn't make sense, as it should have been 400 to match the show and Metalzoa/REBMD. 400-500 was always extremely weak, even in SDY format there was Reinforcements and Sword of Dark Destruction. And MRL introduced Axe of Despair, and Nuzzler/Horn. 500 ATK is basically nothing, which means the secondary effects better be good, so what the hell is up with this failure of a card? Only once negate a targeting effect??? Only once? Why? Why only on Machines? How is it so much worse than the original without even being slightly accurate to the show? Ah, yes even the artwork looks like primitive 3D crap. Terminator 2 came on out 1992 and it looks 10,000x better.

You’re supposed to shuffle afterwards. That’s how most tcg work when you use any effect that searched your deck. Yugioh, Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, they all require by rule for you to shuffle your deck. It’s such an understanding that later generations of all three of these tcg stopped printing cards with deck searching functions that specify “then shuffle your deck afterwards.” Because it’s a base rule.

@@erickchristensen746 while true for the others, its not true for mtg. they specifically mention to shuffle the deck even in current cards because mtg is different. in that game, you literally do what the card says. there are no hidden rules, or implying anything in mtg. If the card says search your deck for this swamp creature, but doesnt specify to shuffle, then you aint gonna shuffle. But there arent many cards like that in MTG, because, thats stupid. The most you can get away with in all of these tcg's are things that let you search, say, the top 3 cards in your deck, order them anyway you like, and place them back on top. Each one of these games has a card or cards like that, and thats the only instance i can think of where you are allowed to search without reshuffling in anything besides mtg.

Ok, let me run a potential MetalMorph retrain by you lot: _Living MetalMorph_ Normal Trap Card _Target 1 face-up monster on the field; equip this card to that target. It gains 500 ATK/DEF, and is also treated as a Machine monster. If it battles, it gains ATK/DEF equal to half the ATK of the monster it is battling, during damage calculation only. If the monster this card is equipped to leaves the field, you can equip this card to another monster on the field, OR you can special summon it as a normal monster ( Machine/ EARTH/ Level 1/ ATK 500/ DEF 500). What's missing for a lot of these cards is a floor value. The way it's designed it's very feast or famine, with the feast being more like a small snack really... They need some sort of counter to the fact that they are bricks if drawn/not summoned. For example maybe Theinen can be shuffled back into the deck by revealing it and it lets you draw Pyramid of Light or the other two combo piece monsters. At best you get to summon Theinen, at worst you can tutor your combo pieces.

Like others have said, this seems like a mechanic that failed solely because there never were actually good cards printed with it. It could become competitive just by actually getting good cards. "But why would Konami ever made a good card archetype where the cards summoned themselves from the deck instead of just making more Extra deck monsters?" Let me remind you that this is the same company that made a Ritual archetype where the monsters cards act as Ritual spells themselves, a Synchro archetype where you deduct the levels of a monster from the tuner in order to Special summon a Synchro with a level that's the difference between the materials used, a Pendulum archetype where the monster cards move themselves around the monster zones and the back row as if it was a board game, and a Fusion archetype where the monsters trigger Fusion summons by being milled. It's very clear by this point that they sometimes will pursue certain mechanics simply because of the novelty factor.

Banish any monster that battles with the equipped monster at the start ofthe battle phase" "(3) if this card is removed from the field while equipped to a normal monster, you can special summon one "metalmorphed" monster from your deck and equip this card from the GY to it." And them tthe metalmorphed mosnters could be versions of all kinds of DM era monsters, the same way toons are. I'd say the way to do that would be a second extra-deck that you can't summon from using anything other than the conditions specifically named on the card, exclusively for this kind of card and similar super-specific combinations or transformations (Assault Mode, Gate Guardian, the named-material fusions, etc). It feels like they deserve a dedicated mechanic at least as much as Rituals do, For that matter, some of those, like Exodia Necross, are practically indistinguishable from Rituals like Drytron that have tribute requirements other than the standard "tribute sufficient levels from hand/field", mechanically, except that they're not tagged as such and so can't be searched.
@matthewkeeling886
@matthewkeeling886 Год назад
@@qwertystop I'm purposefully suggesting placing such cards into the Main Deck to limit consistency when running them given the issues they cause when too easy to summon, so the unserachability is actually a benefit. There always needs to be some type of downside to running ridiculously powerful cards and in Yugioh the most consistent downside is hitting a deck's consistency, despite Konami having apparently being incapable of understanding the concept. Gate Guardian, however, feels like it should have been the first contact fusion given that it needs three two tribute monsters to summon and doesn't even keep their (quite good for the time) shared effect.

If Tails, destroy all ATK position monsters on your side of the field and lose 500 LP for each, and if you do, negate the effects of 1 face-up card on the field for each card destroyed. You can banish this card from your GY; Special Summon 1 "Time Wizard" monster and/or "Thousand Dragon" from your GY. You can only activate 1 "Time Roulette - Go!" effect per turn. This way, the negative effect still can be useful, and it has some consistency being able to negate some cards somewhere. Retrains for Dark Sage and Thousand Dragon could be done, but aren't necessary as the attack everything might be enough to make them okish (making actual old cards relevant is far more badass) Anyways, they already made their "Time Wizard of Tomorrow" which is a "Time Wizard" Monster, and yeah it's okish (negation would be far better than destruction) but has nothing to do with the monsters Time Wizard affected in the show that are still in limbo, but would work with this too.

The look of shock on his face seeing a 3k ATK losing to a 1300 vanilla monster was priceless, Minor note I kept a non-spellcasting area on the field at same time. I made a Mai Valentine deck with trap cards giving ATK over magic ATK boosters. I know I know that annoying bane of my existence Jinzo was definitely a threat, but I had a few options to prevent Jinzo. My Bakura combo often caught players off guard. Dimension hole + Jowgen the Spiritualist. Jowgen also shut down that Phoenix and Vampire Lord skills, so they stay gone. Throw in a Soul Release and boom gone. A couple of points, firstly, Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon is a retrain of and originally a metalised power-up Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon, the same way the two Metalmorph Monsters were! It's only in the TCG/OCG where it got an Effect that actually made it good (seriously, even I wouldn't have played the Animé version of Darkness Metal)! And secondly, there are a few cards these days that can summon out of the Deck, T.G. Trident Launcher, for example, on Link Summon, lets you Special Summon a T.G. each from your Hand, Deck and Graveyard! I play it as a playmaker to set up to go into Hyper Librarian, Star Guardian and Power Gladiator, setting me up to Accel Synchro Summon Shooting Star Dragon T.G. EX! Crystron Halqifibrax, who I also run, also summons out a Lv 3 or lower Tuner from your Deck before trading itself in for a Synchro Tuner from your Extra Deck, which also counts as a Synchro Summon, triggering any Effects the targets might have, like Formula Synchron and T.G.s Star Guardian and Wonder Magician, for example!

Way back in middle/highschool I used the metalmorph strat a few times. I always found casual play more fun than folllowing the meta anyway. Due to questionable rulings at the time and not listing *when* exactly you could do the special summoning of metalmorphed monsters, I would do something along the lines of; Double Coston (already on the field) > Heavy Storm > Zoa/Redeyes > battle phase, activate metal morph, attack, tribute up to Metal zoa/redeyes, attack, Call of the Haunted > Redeyes/Zoa OTK. (2700+2800+2400=7900LP, so if they had ANY missing LP or spent any prior to this, or if I had any kind of burn effect. And if it was Zoa instead of Red Eyes, that was another 600 damage for 8500) Didn't make it 'good' but made these unexpected combos a lot more fun an interesting. This was also around the time of Structure Decks 3 and 4 (Water and fire respectively) so while quite powercrept, we didn't have mass reprints of staple/splashable omni-removes/board wipes.

Ironically, my first starter deck was Starter Deck Kaiba Reloaded- and surprisingly, despite what you'd expect from the Blue-Eyes synergy, Hiita pulled just as much weight as the Toon for the exact reason of being an 1850 normal-summonable beatstick.

Maybe this mechanic can improve with more cards, like this example: Quick spell card that activates if you have a card on your hand that requires to be summoned from the deck. The effect of this quick spell card would be: return said card to your deck, then choose any of these options: - set 1 metalmorph or 1 monster that uses "metalmorph", but you cannot special summon monsters for the rest of this turn. - draw 1 card. - negate the activation of a spell/trap card For Theinen, what about this? > quick spell card that activates only if you have theinen on your hand and at least 1 of the monsters on your GY and 1 on the field. Special summon Theinen - by removing the said monsters from the GY and/or field.

Like Summoned Skull can get another counterpart called Metal Skull, and so on and so forth, and also adding in more consistency cards like searchers and whatnot

These, as well as related things like Assault Mode (main-deck monster with specific summon conditions on a different card) and the less-generic Extra Deck stuff (specific-material fusions, Fang of Critias fusions, fusions with specific conditions that can't actually be brought out by a fusion spell) really doesn't feel like the same concept as the more generic Extra Deck summons, but there's never been a dedicated mechanic made for them, they all end up as either main-deck effect monsters or fusion monsters with a few lines of text explaining that for most practical purposes they actually aren't ("must be special summoned by so-and-so", etc). I wonder if it might be interesting/useful to put all that stuff in a sort of second Extra Deck (call it a Transformation Deck or something) with no card-count limit (like the old Fusion Deck) but no ability to cheat things out without meeting their specific requirements? Since extra-cheat effects and generic-materials monsters were probably the reason that the Fusion/Extra Deck needed a size limit, to stop people from just bringing every possible super-situational but potentially-useful generic Synchro or Fusion that they might theoretically be useful one time in the whole tournament, and thereby having an answer for everything when you put all of that together. It could let the hard-to-bring-out stuff with extremely situational effects see nonzero play, perhaps, and sort of fits with the idea that these aren't conceptually *different* monsters, but upgrades or combinations of existing ones. The anime and manga would often show them as just something-that-happens rather than separate cards you could draw into when you didn't need them, but of course a physical card game needs to print them on some actual card, and that card needs to go somewhere.
@Punmaster9001
@Punmaster9001 Год назад
If the extra deck functioned at the launch of the game as it does now, I think cards like Red Eyes and it's metal morph form would have been more playable as they wouldn't take up spots in the main deck. A lot of what the cards did in the show during the Duelest Kindgom arch was take existing monsters and change them on the fly based on card effects, which works great in an anime and/or fantasy setting, but not easy to replicate in a card game. Throw all those concepts of cards into an extra deck of possible combinations and they would be more like the show. I think a lot of early ideas suffered because the anime was trying to sensationalize the game instead of stick to how the game actually works. And I know with how everything started and how quickly the card game gained popularity in the manga, that they quickly switched the entire story to center around the card game from then on out, so they didn't really have time to come up with a comprehensive game design with tons of test play before hand. I think they'd have to do a major overhaul of the game to make it more balanced over all and I think that would include removing cards completely from the game, like Exodia, so it wouldn't be so broken. But then it loses it's entire history and fundamentally becomes something new while still kind of parodying it's former self. The Deck Building game Ascension is based much on the ideas of MTG, created by Tournement Winners of MTG. I wouldn't mind seeing something similar with Yugioh, but I don't think it would be as popular.

I have thought of some good ideas for monsters that summon themselves from the deck. I have though of an archetype that force your opponent to draw cards to try to deck out them. The boss monster can special summon itself from the deck and it is the following: Gifter Santa Light spellcaster level 10. 2500/3000 Eff: Cannot be Normal/Set summoned. If you control no monsters in your Main monster zones you can special summon this card from your hand, deck or gy. If this card is special summoned, your opponent draws 5 cards. If a monster is normal or special summoned, both players draw 1 card.

So a fun fact about Rare Metalmorph it being limited to Machine monsters is possibly a reference to the yugioh anime, there was a duel in the original yugioh anime where Bandit Keith and Joey dueled, Bandit Keith used machine monsters and, because this was duelist kingdom and it felt like anyone could just make things up as they went during duels, Keith's machine monsters were immune to spell cards. This duel was also the anime debut of Metalmorph, Metal Zoa and Red Eyes Black Metal Dragon, possibly why they chose Metal Morph to get a retrain that gave Machine monsters a (temporary) immunity to spells.

For those that are going to bring up the retrain REDMD. Anime REDMD requires you to tribute Red Eyes Darkness Dragon equiped with the anime trap card Magic Reflection Armor - Metal Plus. The entire purpose was to mimic how old Metalmorph plays. What do you get? Negate spells that target it (its not and was never relevant protection). If your opponent activates a spell, discard a card to negate it. Its just Magic Jammer yet arguably worse. Take this into consideration. REDMD anime requires you to not only tribute a Red Eyes for Darkness Dragon. You also need an extremely circumstancal trap card which already offers spell protection. And tribute the Darkness Dragon to summon Anime REDMD. Konami went out of their way to buff the card into the real game cause anime version is beyond terrible.

Give them the full effect of Metalmorph for starters, them losing out on the "gain half of target's ATK when attacking" makes them weaker than the original monster equipped with Metalmorph, and maybe since the process of summoning them is slow and kinda bad, they could also add in at least some layer of protection to the Metalmorph monsters...
