Awesome conversation ! As well as being a Progressive Christian, I also study and embrace Process Theology! So pleased to see Jay here. I “feel “ lots of good coming down the line and moving into the culture/internet sphere. Thanks very much for helping it along Brendan! I learned a lot about Process Christianity & Theology in this talk. Process thought can be a heavy lift, this helped so much, concise and understandable.

Fantastic conversation! I would be very interested in hearing more about "Beauty first" as spoken about by both Jordan Hall and now also Jay. For a long time, I've thought about Truth, Good and Beauty as a triality which ought to be put in balance or in some kind of self-stabilizing tripartite relationship. To have Truth instead be in service of the other two has started to resonate with me lately, but to also go further and put the Good in service of Beauty is foreign to me. I would love to hear a further exploration of this.

The concept of “God as Counter-Entropic Lure”, and opening up the whole potentiality for creativity and novelty is very appealing to a searching Christian mind. But the desire to align with the advancements made in physics and biology are also very enticing. Process philosophy/theology has helped to bridge the two worlds together in to a cohesive whole. But I still find a need to wrestle with such areas as scientific determinism, meaning the biological and environmental realities are causal and that there are no random causes or free will. Am I alone in this struggle?

Not at all alone. Good news is that there has been a real paradigm shift in the last 15 or so years on the whole issue of reductive determinism. Theories of emergence, downward causation, etc. have done a lot to free us from the shackles of determinism. Highly recommend the work of Erik Hoel on this front, Vervaeke, Henriques, Juarraro, and many others. :)

I love what process has to offer and very appreciative of how it includes modern science and evolution but what’s a stumbling block for me is their belief in a personal god , how can you prove it ? God if anything seem more impersonal to me like a ground of being or no being at all

That’s why it’s called process Christ sChristainity the personal God is Jesus explain in a scientific manner and tries to make explanation in that lens and kind of has to change the concept of Yeshua as God and I think is trying to explain the Christain theology in a non dogmatic and doctrinal way a has a scientific mystical world view that’s it can fit in, but the only thing taking the tri Omni God Concept found in the traditionalist sense people would push back from has its Jesus the God of Love is all powerful and tri Omni and also takes away or limits the whole concept of the supernatural or what their capabilities are thats found in the previous non mystical constructs. It’s definitely a more mystical and spiritual way of intrepreting it which is beautiful and its process approach takes the dogmaticism out of the older lens of looking at it, but they have to watch it going with this methodology or perspective view that process type of concept can conflict with traditionalist thinking which God is more immutable and this process perspective explain God as always evolving which some can see as a contradiction. I mean I love the idea of God always evolving cause to me that make him omnipotent then just always knowing everything cause atleast tin the human experience you more and more about things when you approach something g you don’t know learn about I over time evolve and you become an expert at the thing you know through evolving in its understanding. I’m not comparing humans to Gods and diety so I’m not saying especially a supernatural entity would experiencing this, and I’m not saying I think it’s necessity true that God does not have this Omni god concept for according to how it’s been traditionally taught its believe that’s a concept apart of him and again this what I mean this contradiction will happen between this process and this traditionalist lens if looking at it but same time attempting to change or go contrary to the fundamental core teachings of what’s make Christianity I can see it getting push back that’s all. But I don’t know stuff like this just interests me that’s all.

God having feelings is not new to Whitehead of course. Neither is uncreated eternal agents that can choose or that God in some sense is not all powerful. For example, Joseph Smith taught the same things in the early 1800s.

I like Jay’s explanation for reconciling Christ of faith with Jesus of history but the doubter in me keep nudging me to say that it’s a fictionalization of many peoples and institutions over time
