Super cool! i just happened to have purchased a gameboy color with a fronlight mod, should be completed in 1 to 2 weeks. but its a custom design to have it look like Luigi's gameboy horror in Luigi's mansion, clear shell and horror logo.. so excited!

I love your videos and enjoy the video editing which helpfully cuts out a lot of the "dead air" that a lot of other you tubers leave in. I have to say that I dislike this mod though. With a front light or back light along with other pixel changing tricks to get contrast out the games look great. I'd imagine that with this there would be a good amount of light pollution that could actually impact gameplay. My personal preference would be to have translucent buttons and D-Pad (whatever tint) and put the LEDs inside of the buttons in a non-translucent or transparent case. Then the buttons would glow, and the D-pad would glow, but they wouldnt be visually distracting

I am very happy you got a separate lens with the "COLOR" letters properly spaced, and not that abomination with the crazy space between letters that came with the shell. Please burn that one so nobody uses it by mistake, ever :D

I love handheld modding but the LEDs not so much. Just strikes me as a 'because I can' rather than 'because I should'. Good to see another console mod video anyhow.

I'm not really a big fan of putting LEDs into clear cases but you made it work here pretty well. I had a Gameboy Pocket with clear white buttons and red LEDs that had a pretty awesome visual effect with the black housing it had, but sadly there really isn't enough room inside the front of the pocket to do that so I ended up having to remove them. Looks like the Color has a bit more room to work with.

I was living with my grandparents and they use to give me $5 a week for school snacks. I saved up for months and finally got myself a yellow gameboy color with the pokemon tcg game. It was one of the coolest toys I ever owned...but my grandma got really mad at me for using the money on a video game lol.

lol, I had never seen this video and I already went and got a clear case and glass screen from HHL, and wanted to frontlight. Glad to see the finished product so I know what it looks like! Love everything except the LED brightness, may put a resistor in-line with mine to soften it.

Just a FYI, I wouldn't recommend gluing the lens with E6000 when the screen is installed. I did this with my GBA and it reacted with the plastic of the front light (the glue never touched the front light, just being near it caused the reaction) and ruined it. If you're using E6000, glue the lense down first, give it half a day to set, and then install your screen.

EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw this video in my feed! To take it further, he should backlight mod it too. Hell, do it with the classic gameboy themed gb pocket, then you have something from every Gameboy (excl. the GBAs of course). Design of OG gameboy, form factor of GBP, backlight from GB Light and color from GBC. I would pay a lot for that!

You could put 2 more on each side of the screen, but pointing the lateral, so doesn't interfere on the screen light.

As far as the buttons, the biggest factor to how they feel is the silicone membranes between them and the circuit board. Some 3rd party replacements can feel a bit too stiff, so try to reuse the original ones like I did here. The replacement shells available these days are generally all pretty good quality.

+Sab You can do that too -- the trick with these clear cases is to paint the inside, the paint won't wear off that way.

Yeah, I used the same solder points for the frontlight. The LED modules have a built-in resistor to handle a range of input voltages.

The kit I use is from iFixit -- they have several different sets, but they're generally all good quality.
