The UNESCO World Heritage List features Meteora.
The term is etymologically related to meteor and signifies "lofty" or "elevated."
Monks lived in the caves of Meteora as early as the eleventh century. But the construction of monasteries did not begin until the fourteenth century, when the monks needed a place to hide from the growing number of Turkish raids on Greece. At this time, windlasses or detachable ladders were the only ways to reach the summit. Steps were built onto the rock in the 1920s, making the ascent easier these days. Out of the 24 monasteries, only six-two belonging to women and four to men-remain operational, and they all house less than ten people.
