Gold Basin, Arizona is one of the world's most famous meteorite strewnfields. For a decade Geoff and Steve have dreamed of exploring the nearly inaccessible northern end of the zone. To reach it, the Meteorite Men must take to the sea - well, Lake Mead - and follow a secret treasure map bequeathed to them by their late friend and mentor, Professor Jim Kriegh, discoverer of the Gold Basin meteorite. The National Park Service pitch in and grant a special permit to hunt in the Federal preserve which is off-limits to the public. The reserve is, however, home to the mojave green rattlesnake with its deadly neurotoxin, so the guys must be accompanied by a park ranger survival expert. Later, Dr. Laurence Garvie at ASU's Center for Meteorite Studies is amazed by something that Steve and Geoff have found.
TRIVIA
The original plan for this expedition was to cross Lake Mead in the Hydtratrek, as Geoff was smitten with the idea of a "D-Day style amphibious landing" at Burro Bay, but the Park Sevice would not allow the vehicle's use. A second ambitious plan would have dropped the guys on the north shore by helicopter, but that was ruled out as too dangerous. Show producer Sonya Gay Bourn saved the day by negotiating the use of the giant houseboat, seen in the episode. When Geoff heard this news, he instructed his assistant go find an Army-Navy store and get him a captain's hat [pictured]. Geoff humorously quoted Rock Hudson from the film "Ice Station Zebra" and said to all present: "This ship operates on a first-name basis. And my first name is Captain!"
All of the meteorites found during this episode remain the property of the Nationa Park Service, but were presented on long-term loan to the Oscar Monnig Meteorite Gallery at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.

Thanks! I went to the UK to do that one episode of "Dealers." It was fun. I was invited to do that after "MM" and one of the meteorites I took was found on the show. I never received a copy of that show. Where did you see it?

RE: Using the FLIR camera at 38:45-- I have one smallish meteorite that I found because it was *cooler* than its surrounding rocks. I was resting in some very minimal shade in the desert and put my bare hand down on some undamaged desert pavement, and there was something cool under my palm, different enough from the surrounding stones that I lifted up my hand in surprise and looked. And there was this half-a-walnut-sized black rock; there was absolutely no iron in the area that I had ever heard of, and everything else around was all tan, cream or gray. So I checked with a magnet I had with me (I was geocaching) and it was magnetic as anything, and I took it home and had it tested, and sure enough: a very small meteorite. Metallic items hold lower temps a long time too, after all, and the way the shade was moving as the hours passed kept this little thing in the cooler coverage for quite a while.

Get bassinet hound, put him in a magnetic coat. His low belly will pick up meteorites. Just kidding, lol.

I knew this episode was going to be unique, different, and unusual. I don't think this is a meteorite field. The emerging theoretical science of Electric Universe has a specific branch know as EU Geology. Basically, the US desert south-west was once subjected to a very odd, and enormously powerful lighting/plasma storm, which also included sub-sonic winds. It is difficult to grasp the scale of this event. It literally transformed the topography of that region. I think what we are looking at is the shatter and scatter remnants of rocks that exploded from powerful lightning strikes, and were blown around before landing in the area. The heat and electrical charge can instantaneously cause the minerals to metamorphisize. The map of previous finds there, is only an indication of a easily accessible searchable areas.

Hey meteorite dudes, I think I found a Strewn field in the Mountains where I live. I don't know how to map the SF. And was wondering have you guys ever hunted meteorites on Native American Indian Reservations?

Geoff A few years back about 2:30 AM I watched a huge blue light coming straight down then it was like it hit something horizontal and a red colored light shot out each side of the blue beam ,then it looked like it was raining down big fire balls, I didn't hear anything , I would like to hear your opinion thanks

Meteorite Density is about the Same over the Entire World, Farm Land Makes it Much Harder to Find them as they are most likely underneath the Soil--The desert area's of the World are the Best Places to Find them as they generally Lay where they Fall...

Lawrence Garvy? There was someone from around Wichita named Garvy mixed up with a Fentanyl lab that was using his profits to buy meteorites! Weird. The Garvy family owned the largest grain elevator in the world and banks. Old money...

I am headed to Gold Basin to do some Nugget Shooting and Meteorite Hunting next month... Can't wait. But I may not have to wait to do some Meteorite Hunting as I believe (99% sure) I have found a newer unknown Crater near me... I am sure you have heard that before. But I could send you an overhead Google Earth screenshot if interested. I have not been on it just yet, but am planning on heading out to it next week. My plan is to GoPro and upload my Crater adventure to my RU-vid Channel without giving up its location.

4.5 billion years old?...suspiciously so too is earth
@OllamhDrab
@OllamhDrab 5 лет назад
Well, that's kind of the point, it's leftover stuff from when the planets formed. Earth rocks are different cause they were molten and most of the heavy stuff like iron and nickel sank to the core. Most of what's been in the crust has reformed and changed since then, (so aren't considered 'old rocks' even if the atoms have the same origins) so the space rocks that haven't changed much since way back can tell us a lot.
