Just quit bein salty over his success.. cuz thats what it seems like.. you took something and tried making a race issue out of it when it's clearly documented that drakes family used it. You would have seen that if you did your homework but either you didnt do it or thought u could use it as an opportunity to slander someone who's doing breakdowns better than you.

A lil push back on the Asap Rocky point, i think it was only his first mixtape that the bone flow and Huston influence could be seen. Other than that I would argue he kept certain aspects of NY rap alive (the Mob as a whole) posse cuts etc. Other members of the mob went hard with the boom bap sound Asap Nast and especially Asap twelvy his album 12 was slept on.

"N.Y. state of mind" by Nas is the best New York City anthem to me! I don't care if it didn't chart on Billboard, that's one best songs to ever represent NYC of any genre. That song is the score for subways that connect the boroughs and the dangerous streets and projects above ground. It completely embodies the feel of NYC at that time and I agree with the last lyrics of that track "nothings equivalent to the New York State of Mind".

Yeah the way they came out defined how alot of people remember Rocky/Asaps sound. I think Rocky is alot more new york than people gave him credit for especially considering new yorks “sound” at the time (late 2000s) wasnt the boom bap style people associate new york with.

I think the word Anthem is too broad for this. Like, All I Need is a SUPER classic. But, a New York ANTHEM??? Mmm.. then, what is an anthem? I think of a record that turns up everybody as soon as it comes on, and motivates you to represent for your home town. Ruff Rydaz Anthem is an anthem. Ante Up is a BK Anthem. New York is a NY Anthem. Da Ja Vu is an Uptown Anthem. JayZ and Biggie - BK’s Finest is a BK anthem. Mobb Deep - Shook Ones. Nas - Made You Look / NY State Of Mind. The Bridge is Over / South Bronx are BX anthems. Dip Set and JayZ - Welcome to New York City. Bodak Yellow is a popular song. All I Need is not a New York anthem, it’s a GOAT level HipHop love song though. But are these classic NY ANTHEMS?!

It's interesting that you found Pop Smoke reminiscent of 50 Cent considering Drill was originally inspired by 50 Cent, a NY rapper. Rappers from Chicago have credited 50 as a significant inspiration of the sub genre with songs like "Heat" in particular. So it goes from Chicago to London and back around to NY. Then Pop Smoke records feel like 50 in the 2020s. His music was authentically NY

In defense of A$ap Rocky and similar artists, what about artists that didn't give up New York's sound? Joey, Billy Woods, Griselda, and other New York rappers still have traditional east coast elements and both people aren't supporting it when it's buttons away and labels are suppressing it

I guess it depends on criteria defined too - does it have to be a big hit or just a song NYers go crazy for?

Company Man, this is also something I commented on before. But the "NY" style is probably still alive in the Buffalo/Griselda Records crew. These are people you put me on by the way. I've been listening to your artists to listen to and goodness gracious you are on the money! I have cousin in Upstate NY and as a kid he was the one that put me on to CNN The War Report OMG what an OUTSTANDING album. But yes, as a native New Yorker we don't have a sound anymore all we have is an accent and that's slowly dying as well. I'm not saying we are gonna completely lose the non-rhotic accent. NY style Hip-Hop is not going anywhere the culture around it just turned it into a niche market. Basically underground Hip-Hop back packers and such. To best describe it is NY style Hip-Hop is what Rock is to Pop and what Jazz is to Hip-Hop. That's why LL chose Q-Tip. I'm glad to see you discovered you have a new audience of young thinkers and I'm also glad you are correcting things from the public record and rhetoric on RU-vid. When you said you looked up to Rachel Maddow and you said you were a journalist now a doctor, I didn't know that. The only person I can remember from HS when I was young that's an anchor today is Errol Barnett Channel One News. Does anyone remember Channel One News in your class?!?! 😂🤣😂You're the best Company Man!!!

First of all, salute to you after all the recent controversy, you’re a legend of the culture. I hope this (not needed) situation turns to be a learning turnpoint for up and coming white people in hip hop media and for white consumers who love this culture (like myself). About the state of the NY sound, I’d add the fact that if we address the A$AP sound being heavily influence by Houston, is just fair to say that the NY drill sound was basically a copy paste of the London drill sound. Yeh, Pop Smoke kind of took it to another level cause of his voice and overall talent but that whole wave came from London.

@TheCompanyMan I'm curious as to why you say Young Dolph as a potential big 3? I fully agree that X, Juice & Pop Smoke , were the next 3 but considering Dolph has a older discog, his own label, is arguably a top 5 rapper from Memphis, has his own protégé (Key Glock) and was born the same year as Cole, I feel like he's at least a generation removed from the other 3.

of course bodak yellow would be more popular than no flockin. Cardi got male and female fans, but mostly the female fans and 50 cent, weird al yankovich anybody else wins when they make parody type music. A huge part of the reason for the success of All I Need is that it also had a huge female fan base outside of what was then a typically male driven sound. Remember when Canibus complained that 99% of LL fans where high heels? Justin Hunt act like he somehow forgot about this stuff in Hiphop history
