Not sure if you're still trying to breed these, but they are about next to impossible to find. The mosobo are easy, but the membe deep are very rare. Shame I couldn't keep the group of these that I had. Trying to find them again.
Thank you Sarah. I keep quite a few species across several tanks, so once in awhile I'll recognize what's going on and see them spawning. Just recently started setting up the tripod and pressing record. My most prolific species is P. Demasoni and always have at least 4 females holding, but I've never seen them spawn... now that's sneaky
Unfortunately, no. Never had a more frustrating time with an mbuna. From ratios to poor spawning. Next time I'll set them up species only, I think. Check Wetspot in Portland. Offering F1 again, but I think they're out at the moment. Should have some soon...
i had some 5 to 10 years ago here in iowa would love to get my hands on some again and breed them? have not seen them around here for awhile now maybe you could help me?
Really awesome ... I want to buy new tank just for him! :) ... And what about think these combine; 1male 3female sp. membe and 1male 3 female Mpanga. 200Lt tank? Maybe later hongi ...
So sorry for the late reply. I'm sure you've moved forward on stocking. In case you have not, what are the dimensions of your aquarium? That's the single most important factor when choosing Malawi fish.
These fry were essentially 'sold' earlier last summer. Wasn't expecting them to take so long to spawn. Couldn't come at a worse time really. Heading out of the country for awhile soon here...
Amazing video! Those eggs are big! Those fish stand out big time! I really like that the female is yellow! I hope you keep all the babies! Are you going to strip her later or just let her spit?
Thanks Ricky... I will strip at about 14 days. If she's holding by the end of tomorrow I'd say she's good for the long haul. First time mother so I won't be surprised if she doesn't; disappointed but not surprised.
one of my favorite mbuna. I've had these guys for a few years now. very prolific. my f2s spawn like clockwork every 5 weeks. video doesn't capture the true color.
I had the opposite experience. Originally bought 12 fish. Ended up with only 2 females. Bought another 10, and again only 2 females. Only 2 ever spawned, and their broods were always small. I tried stripping at 2 weeks, 10 days, 1 day... every time most of the eggs had gone brown. I tried letting them hold longer, and sometimes they'd swallow them. So frustrating... Glad you're having success. They're a stunning fish for sure.
No, that's a good question and one more hobbyists should be concerned about. All mouthbrooders can hybridize, but keeping those chances low is key. Avoid look alikes, fish in the same genus/body shape & profile, stock appropriate numbers/m:f of each species, avoid combos that are known to produce hybrids(red zebra & yellow lab).
