The story isn't confusing at all: Basically Artyom wants to find and make peace with the Dark One, and the Red Communists want to capture the Dark One and turn it into a weapon, as well as raiding D6 for weapons to control the metro. There, summarised in one sentence. It's really not that hard to understand if you take into account everything that you hear.
I think people are confused because they're so insistent on using Russian dialogue. Sure, the English dub sucks balls, but at least you can understand what the hell people are saying without constantly glancing down at subtitles. I reserve the original dialogue for second play throughs.
Yes +CommonFable, it is that poor. Literacy is terrible these days, people have problems even reading books in general. It sucks and it annoys me but such is life :(
Must be fun being presumptuous. No, I can read subtitles, I had them on even with the dub. But I'd rather have my focus on what the game is showing and being able to understand background conversations until I've completed the game.
The love interest isn't hamfisted because she looks like a mannequin, it's hamfisted because you've only known each other for about 72 hours and most of that time was spent separated.
Then again, you do end up getting stuck together in a grim quarantine room, having to worry about catching weaponized Ebola with a near 100% fatality rate. Such circumstances certainly can bring people "closer" in shorter periods of time.
You touched on one thing that was a real missed opportunity: the really cool idea of military-grade bullets being the only real currency down in the tunnels. I thought that was a really thematic and unique concept and could have made for some really interesting mechanics like bribing, more meaningful bartering, etc.
Last light is objectively much better than 2033, but it's at the lose of that incredible STALKER vibe that made it so memorable. Playing through LL reminds me more of Half Life 2 than its spiritual roots.
STALKER's open world structure and immersive systems like AI buddies, unpredictable weather, etc. made up it's vibe, so there is no point comparing STALKER with Metro series other than atmosphere.
Eh, Last Light made a lot of good improvements but they dumbed down the stealth so incredibly hard in the process. Now don't get me wrong, 2033 had a lot of issues and the stealth was janky/unpredictable as hell, but I still prefer that over the "I won't ever notice you unless you run up to me while wearing neon lights and a siren around your neck" AI of Last Light. Overall, I felt like I really had to plan my moves carefully in 2033, and was harshly punished when things went wrong (whether from my own doing or the game's). Last Light took the easy way out and made the AI braindead.
in last light the enemy AI is dumbed down horribly. the controls got fucked with that stupid wheel of throwable objects and the second half of the story is retarded as hell.no LL is NOT better than 2033.
Yosef Yonin That throwable wheel bullshit is one of the most infuriating control schemes I've ever had the displeasure of using, especially in boss fights on Ranger Hardcore mode.
DrearierSpider1 You're not along, the simple, linearity of 2033 plays way better with the mouse and keyboard. On stealth...well it was never really good, LL just made it casual
djchristian82 ? Railshooters are games where you cannot move at all, the camera is moved for you and you have a set time to kill all the enemies on the screen before it goes to the next scene. It's not so common anymore, mainly it was a genre used in arcade shooters.
I'm about 10 hours in on my first playthrough and feel like I've spent about 7 of those hours sneaking around bad guys in the dark, and I'm having a great time. Story is excellent too.
Redux is IMO certainly a whole lot better than the original version - not in the least because optimization and it just runs a whole lot better and on higher settings too. Plus, it has all of the DLC and is often 75% off on Steam
Wait a second - it isn't about stealth/shooting that determines which ending are you going to have.. killing innocent people/mutants who aren't agressive+missing most of the morale points in the story that decides that you end up with the bad ending.. you can shoot your way through the whole game and still end up with the good ending
wes8723 So I did. I was shooting only hostiles who attacked me for no reason or those who were going to stations in order to attack civilians. I was helping everyone on my way as I was assuming this will give me the good ending like in previous games. Alas I had punished for killing some psychos.
Alexander Yordanov Wha? My point still stands strong. I got bad ending despite being the only guy who was doing something in this game. I like the game, just didn't like the way we get the endings. It wasn't even stated anywhere. I was right assuming that theme of the game haven't changed since the first one
EvilScrooge The game's main themes are related to your actions. It is an example of thematic Roleplaying in remediation. This is the best possible way to give the ending within the genre's constraints. The only way to make it better... is more content near the final parts of the game, Act 3.
Good review, one point though, I think the mutant fights are added in an attempt to lower your recourses, because tbh by the end of the fights we usually starting to run out of bullets, this was done so that when we finally made it back to fighting humans it added more tension and a slight sense of helplessness as well as emphasising on the resource management t concept
Unlike most horror games, these games are really terrifying. Not in a sense that they scare you with monsters and/or jumpscares, tell you how bad humans can get and all this crap that was told and shown a bazillion times before, but in the way they present the world after a nuclear war. It's pretty horrifying and at some degree even shocking to see the surface in these games. This is post-apocalypse done right, unlike Fallout and Wasteland where nuclear war is nothing more than a mere part of the setting. And oh boy, the plane scene...
KOMMyHuCT - Your comparing a linear game that's signifigantly smaller then these huge open world games. When there is a open world game in the Metro universe that comparable in size to Fallout/Wasteland, then we can compare.
I'm a very big fan of the Metro series, I got soooo into the first game when it was first released. It's one of those rare games that I finish almost every year. And because of that I bought the books and they're amazing.
I really want a new Stalker game. I don't care how busted it is. I embrace the Jank. Also fuck the morality system. That fucker leaves me to die after all the shit I did to did to get it.
The Autismo Piggo There is no difference in Last Light Redux visibly other than the switch/lever model having a better texture. I think you are thinking of Metro 2033 Redux.
Those are not gold bullets...those are pre -war 5.45×39 ammo (caliber of AK 74/RPK 74 etc), probably incendiary. It is justified in the game that homemade bullets are now contain less powder.. therefore are way weaker, especially against mutants. Also, there are some amazing experimental guns if you search. The "gold" bullets can be used in an AK 74M or any other 5.45 caliber gun in the game,w which inflict massive damage, but is equivalent to "shooting money away"
This was one of those games i heard mentioned like once or twice when it came out, then just earlier this year i decided to purchase the redux dual pack and was deeply invested in it. Granted i experienced the polished version before even seeing what the original 2033 looked like but i definitely took my time with this game and was taken back by the atmosphere that this game had, very pleased that i decided to pick it up when i did.
From what i remember, the mutant sections have an option for stealth if you take out the mutant on lookout quietly and quickly, or sneak around it, it won't call it's friends. They aren't unavoidable wave of enemies sections.
The only real problem is that on Ranger Hardcore there is no way to see how much ammunition and gas mask you have total. However this is fixed on the Redux versions, which you should get if you don't have the originals already. The other smaller issue is when you have a scripted scene and you're supposed to press action or melee button and it's impossible to know because there is no hud indicator. To work around this just smash action and melee if there is something trying to kill you. It's not perfect but I really love playing without any hud and wish more games would do this!
They are not Quick Time Events btw. QTE is a series of buttons to do something which you fail if you press wrong button. In Metro you only need to press one button once, action or melee. But yeah it is an issue becaue you never know when you're actually supposed to do either so you just need to spam both :D
I also have to say that the Extra Missions (that are included in the game if you get Redux) are some of the best value for money you can get. I'd almost hold them on the level of Expansion Packs like Perseus Mandate and Resurrection of Evil. Some are a bit short, while others are incredibly long and diverse. That level Kyshatria is almost it's very own game with heaps of potential of it's own game.
Gggmanlives btw, you should check out Titanfall 2. The gunplay and movement system is fantastic. Most fun I've had in an FPS in ages. Reminds me of Doom 2016 in some ways, you have to keep moving or you'll die.
***** To... help the book's popularity? To make sure gamers are informed and do not go off talking Bull about higher art forms :P ? To help in the analysis of the game? This is one of its greatest strengths, by far.
videolookertube This isnt trivial :P In fact it is part of the game's design. ***** Ohh the gamer for some reason seems pissy? Glukhovsky wrote the game from his own pre-release Metro 2035 version of the book. That was already a book and it existed, then it was edited again after he finished Futu.re and later released. Seriously, with gamers like you, no wonder gaming is so shit these days.
***** Do not take my logic and twist it. Where did I whine here? Seems like you are mad at getting Rekt every single time by book readers, I get that... but I did not whine about the games here. Here is my plan for you to stop being a pleb. 1) Stop being monolingual. 2) Play more games, especially old game. 3) Read more books. Then you can help gaming. Before that... just another bookburner or idiot that is destroying the video game industry out of stupidity.
***** The Metro video games are an example of remediation in video games. That shows the video game medium growing up. The fact that book themes and ideas made the jump into both world design and storytelling is also extremely important. That is why the books being mentioned is important. An analysis or review of the game without those facts seems meaningless, devoid of depth and reason. Explaining that to someone who addresses book readers in a vile way (reminds me of the Game of Thrones untermenschen) is ironic. Where have I whined that the games arent like the books?
@Gggmanlives - I love your game reviews! They are no bullshit assessments of a game's playability and I thank you for it. You crank these reviews out with impressive speed, determination and vigor. It has become apparent that you focus exclusively on FPS games, and I'm sure you can continue to do so for quite some time with no lack of available content both from the past and present. However, I have asked once before and I humbly ask again, please for the love of christ review Spec Ops: The Line. In doing so I would become the happiest youtube subscriber on your channel, sonny jim!
This series is of the "Experience first" variety of games, where the experience of playing through, and the after-taste it left is often the first thing you think about when you recall the game. And that experience is something more than just fun. Other examples would be * the immersive sims like Shock games, Deus Ex, * FPSs like, STALKER and Half Life series, * certain RPGs like Planescape Torment, * Puzzles games like Portal and Braid, * Adventure games like I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Undertale(RPG+Adventure) * Horror games like Silent Hill series, Resident Evil Remake. * Certain console games like Shadow of the Colossus and Journey.
One change I've noticed between 2033 and LL is the reload animations. 2033's reloads were sexy smooth, whereas LL's was choppy, like 4A took out frames or something. Not a fan of all the tacticool scopes in a post-apocalyptic setting either; where do they find the batteries to power all this?
This is for me the best FPS game I have ever played.. yes I know the stealth is easy, the AI isn't the smartest, etc. but the pacing is fantastic the whole 15 hours of the campaign - not one dull moment in it (buggy section in this game is way, way better than the one in HL2), game has one of my favorite stories ever, some great characters and dialogs, atmosphere isn't as scary as in 2033, but still pretty creepy and very strong, gunplay is fun, weapons interesting and cool looking, graphics are fantastic, I love the level design - some levels that were linear, than levels that had more rooms, more paths and than that one level which was almost STALKER like which I absolutely loved, the world building is out of this world, that immersion, music, mutants, the amount of charm this game has, tons of small and big details, etc.. If 2033 was for me more like a CoD STALKER game than LL is HL2 version of STALKER.. + I actually liked the DLCs for this game, the best from them being the Khan mission and one of the best experiences in modern FPS games - the Kshatriya level 2013 best games for me were : MLL, Call of Juarez Gunsliner and Shadow Warrior + P.S. If you want to have the best (Good) ending, you can still shoot your way through the whole game.. just don't shoot innocent people and non-agressive mutants .. and make the right moral choices in the game and listen to NPCs in the game world+do some side stuff like it's the case with the missing teddy bear for that kid
So many people don't get it and I understand this. For instance, a lot of boss and creature encounters can be stealth or tactics but this isn't sign posted at all. I've played this and exodus through a few times and amazed at the little touches I've found
Holy shit I love this game. I played through it in one sitting on the ranger difficulty setting the first time i played it and my good was it good. The only complain I have is that (for me) the game was a bit on the easy side, even when set to the ranger difficulty.
I love the Metro series, played it until there was no more difficulty settings or anything else to explore, Also made a song called "last light" inspired by my experience in it! its a great game! nothing wrong about being linear. :D I sometimes google for mods with some hope, but nothing...
metro is a really good game overall but somehow i was always wondering how glorious could it be by giving a player some more freedom, some choices to be made in storyline, some side quests or anything that will give you a feeling of exploring it not just by following from animation to animation.
Another great review! I love this game, btw. When it originally released I beat the game and got the bad ending then when the redux came out I beat it again with the good ending, very satisfying experience imo.
G, I generally go to your reviews for a good and informative review, but I gotta address these: 1. It feels like a dlc with familiar settings because they're not going to make a Metro Sequel that doesn't take place in the metro. If anything, the surface is actually different because you're in marshes and mines, not ruined cities. 2. I understand if you put down the game for a bit and came back a while later you would be confused with the plot, but I think it was rather straight forward. Artyom has to get back with the Rangers and the game is padded by being captured and sidetracked every single level. 3. Do you think they gold bullets or did you just call them that when playing? In both games they're explained as pre-war military rounds and everything else are junk bullets made in the metro.
+Gggmanlives I'm not trying to shit on your review, I just think 1 and 2 are perspectives to consider. Or you just dgaf, which is fine, man. I only figured if you're reviewing the game, you had investment. And yeah, gold colored because of the polished metal shell, but not real gold. Literally Kalashnikov 5.45 cartridge.
Killing Pavel was both the hardest, and most rewarding parts of the game. He would always be in very enclosed spaces and could seemingly kill you in one shot, making grenades mandatory.
Great review as always, I love this game. By the way, I have a recommendation for you. Have you ever played Haze for the PS3? Pretty cool game, worth checking out.
Every time I hear someone say "The Russian is better" I want to stab a puppy. The English and Russian is the same damn voice actors and its better to enjoy the game how you want instead of saying one is objectively better. Because you know the best way to enjoy something is to stare at the bottom two inches of the screen any time anything relevant to the plot is going on. Before anyone bitches out about what I am saying, there is a disturbing number of people who will say you played this game the wrong way if you used the English language. I counter that by saying using subtitles with the Russian language is robbing yourself of the experience, go russian without subtitles since clearly that was the games intention (It wasn't. It was mean't for an English release, its why they went through the effort of having the Russian voice actors record English dialog, despite most of them not speaking English. Its way more of a pain in the ass than just getting English speakers.) The logic behind that is the same as saying any medieval themed game should be spoken in Gaelic, French, and Germanic.
Maliciously Delicious What you say is true and should be painfully obvious. I am not going to play Japanese or French games eith their original audio if it robs me from any and all story elements
Russian dub does'nt meen it's better just cause game was made by russians. BUT.. if we mention Metro, than yes, russian voice is better just because english voice is disaster
Aren't you meant to be a Russian native speaker in game as well? It would make sense for it to be english, since you understand English and not Russian, and artyom understands Russian and not English. You are meant to be him, so you should hear what he hears, and he hears legible words.
Just a thought. Will you look at the Hellgate: London. I know it is old and quite forgotten. Just would like to know your opinion. Thanks for another great review, comrade.
great review dude. i had this game for like 3 years i think and i never played it (steam sales and what nots) i did beat the original a while back and now ill go play it... after skyrim special edition...
This might be the first review of this game I've seen with a complete absence of screen tearing. Drives me nuts. Much appreciated. I kinda prefer the bad ending for this one.
Gggmanlives I mean I've watched maybe 4 reviews of Metro Last Light in the past. They all had screen tearing and it's one of those things I spot in a second and can't stand to see.
I played bot games on Redux versions on PS4 and both on Survival mode (Where stuff are scarse and you need stealth to ration). Didn't encountered most of the problems you mentioned.
I did enjoy both games but I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't an open world type game like Stalker. Would be great if they did a fourth episode!
Metroided R34 At least he didn't reject the request that I given him to review such as Area 51 (2005) with blacksite, Necrovision and Cryostasis. That is all that matter. Wondering is he going to do Alan Wake for the finale in Monday?
So what you're saying is it's the Steely Dan of video games; rich with detail and atmosphere, and works against the grain by doing what is not traditionally considered good and mixing it with something that gains near universal praise, occasionally offering some moments of intelligent social commentary, but usually just operating on a completely separate wavelength to everyone else.
I remember when i first heard about metro. I didn't even google about it, i just bought Last Light and played it. Of course I didn't understand what the hell was going on until I finished it and realised it was the second installment. I'd always had the feeling that it reminded me of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. After i googled "metro series" to find the name of the first game, I knew that the developers used to be the head of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.
I thought long about my fav fps game after 2000,it has to be the Metro games,it satisfies the fps fan as well a the rpg fan, best games made after 2000 imho
I watched both the metro reviews this guy did, and while i agree to most of the things he says, i disagree about how scavenging and resource planning works. For me on both games scavenging ammunition while on human parts and ultimately spend it *the ammo* while on monster parts worked and i had no problem with that. Actually that feeling that i am about to run out of all ammo when the shit hits the fan, and that sense of impending doom was a strengh rather than a weakness of the game. I never did run out of ammo, but sometimes i did have to spend some prewar ammunition. It is supposed to be that way. Other than that this is one of nicests looking most immersive and lifelike gaming experiences of all time. I see metro 2033 and last light as a single game. Just bough the metro 2033 redux edition and even i have played the game at least 5-6 times im gonna give it another go, i tell you its that good.
i wasnt too excited with 2033. the book was way more better, that i wished the game would have been more based on the book than just shooting monsters, which never really appear in the book. LL was actually much more enjoyable and it also took me over 12 hours since i have tried to explore as much as i could and be stealthy where ever i could.
The combat, and weapons were revamped in last light and and were way better then 2033 which shows in the 2033 redux as it uses this updated system to make it consistent with last light which to me made the Redux versions worth it on PC.
I recognized that part where you have to sit in a corner and play shooting gallery, wait for the boat to come. After like the fifth time dieing, I moved on to another game. Fuck this shit. It was so good before this.
I wish Artyom would speak in game just like he dos between load screens it would make him feel more real and also it would be easier for Artyom to tell certain characters to shut up or tell Nazis or red or whoever that he is a "Ranger from the Order"
Just thought it would be interesting to see you do a game from a series that is on the console and mainly, because I'm a big fan of the series. Obviously the majority of games you do are on PC, so I thought I'd give it a shot and ask.
Like I said, I just thought it would interesting to see you switch it up. I know you do one type of genre (FPS) for the majority of the time, but it would definitely be cool to see you do go outside of it a tad more.
Hey gggman, ever heard of the forbidden siren series? I would like to see a review of it cause it's so rare to find any information of this game. There's two series on ps2, and a remake on ps3. Check it out.
Other than looking maybe a little better, switching from 2033 to last Light in the redux version, cant tell that I'm playing a new game. They both play very similarly
Nonononono It's not a resell, they fixed multiple bugs and updated the graphics and reworked some of the mechanics. Multiple things you wouldn't be able to just fix with a patch. Not to mention they gave you ALL the DLC including the pre-order RPK and the AK-74u (That's only available in Ranger Hardcore/Survival Hardcore)
