I’m 41 and I beat this game for the first time today thanks for you. Got a time of just over 4 hours with 99% item completion after skipping that missile pack that required the tricky shine spark. Thanks again from a true fan of your videos.
@TheScribe1.0 weird flex... but ok. You sound like one of those people who still brags about scoring the winning touch down in high school to win the championship. Your name isn't Al, and you're not a shoe salesman married to Peggy now by any chance, are you? Lol
@@DietBajaBlast I've beat this game so many times, can't really call myself speedrunner, but practice makes perfect. I used to be bad at wallkicking (wall jumps) but gotten pretty decent now. I'm still bit bad at shinesparking, but takes time and you will be a pro :)
My favorite game ever made! Its a game that is super special to me. I was going through a very bad time at home and school, and my grandparents got this for me when I went to live with them permanently to help cheer me up, and I was completely engrossed. Thank you for making this UCBVG and now I'll stop going Super Metroid when?😂
Of course there have been a few gems from my childhood, that are runner ups like The Guardian Legend, Terranigma, Illusion Of Gaia, Secret Of Evermore and so on, but those are all pretty long games. Super Metroid can be beaten pretty quick by comparison. Especially if your name is Oatsngoats... 😅🤭
This was an unforgettable experience when it was released. I made my way to Kraid, died, and realized I wasn’t saving each time (I was hitting the wrong button). I wasn’t even mad in the slightest, since I got to do all of it over again. It was THAT great.
Agreed. The experience playing it for the first time with fresh eyes was unlike anything else I've ever played. Prime came close, but Super Metroid was still the only one that ever gave me that feeling.
One of the best games ever made. Its atmosphere created the feeling of being isolated, and having to only rely on your grit and wit to continue. A true classic i still take my hat off to salute to this day.
3:12:40 My head canon is that the Baby Metroid only recognizes Samus because of the health alarm sounding. Most players will lose to Ridley on Ceres Station, and he leaves as soon as your health dips below 30 and the health alarm goes off. The Baby Metroid comes straight at you in Tourian and only stops a few moments after the same alarm starts blaring.
Playing it at release was an amazing experience, but the fact that it stands up so well all these years later is what makes it one of the best. From solid controls to subpixel animation, every piece was polished to a mirror finish.
When I used to look back I would wonder if it's because the technology finally opened up so many new possibilities and it was the first time anyone was exposed to them BUT even in retrospect, they stand the test of time, we're exceptionally well made/ designed and, imo, are deserving of the "classic" status they've achieved. TL;DR they weren't just new concepts, they were truly exceptionally well conceived, designed and implemented for any generation.
Whenever it's been a few weeks since UCBVG has posted I know something epic is coming. And I was right again. Thank you UCBVG, please keep doing what you do.
I recently discovered your channel and I love it! The amount of work and attention to detail that you put into your videos is astounding! Your voice is pleasant and easy-going, and I'll sometimes put one of your playlists on at night in order to help me fall asleep. Thank you for all of your hard work! Keep it up!
Super Metroid is my all time favorite game. I can't even count how many times I played through it and it never disappoints. Definitely going to set some time aside to watch this video!
Edit: I just realized UCBVG has another video, the one on Dragon Quest III, that is EVEN LONGER than this one. Seriously, this man is a machine! Almost 4 hours. Dayum. Kudos. I can only imagine how long it must have taken to play, record, edit the footage, record voiceover, and upload. Serious kudos for this vid.
To true. As my first serious play through of Super Metroid, the Pixel Art is phenomenal & The visual story Telling is exceptional too. I’m halfway through it now.
@@Solsta it introduced me to the concept of soft locking as a kid, because it isn’t as obvious how wall jumping works as the game tries to make it seem lol Even replaying the game as an adult I couldn’t figure it out until I read that you have to press away from the wall and then press jump in that order.
I sold the game around 1999 because I couldn't figure out how to wall jump. I bought it again years later and fortunately had RU-vid to help explain how to do it.@@Prodmullefc
I don't need this video this week but one week I will. Thank you for a legacy of really great guides that you're leaving. I don't know anyone who does it as well as you.
By far the best game you've ever covered. Thorough and concise. I'd love to do some free artwork for you as appreciation for what you do. Thank you for everything you do.
I love love love Super Metroid. Favorite video game ever! But I have NEVER gotten 100% (I think 98% was my best). Even looking at maps online, I've not been able to figure out what I missed.
Super Metriod is a game I never played when i was younger. I remember seeing it at our Video store but never wanted to play it. It wasn't until the middle of being quarantined that i began playing it and WOW! it absolutely blew me away with how good it is for an SNES game. I can imagine how good it would have been if i played it when i was younger.
Super Nintendo just something you were never interested in or something, you said it was pretty good for a snes game, are you implying that most of them are mediocre or something.
This is definitely one of my favorite games of all time!! Haven't watched your channel in a while but im going to watch as much as I can before work and the rest afterwards! Thanks for the video!
The chill retro video game walkthroughs are such a calm treat for days when my job is out and I'm in need of some simple recharging time. Hope this channel has many ideas for years to come!
So many great memories of this game as a kid. My parents bought it for me as soon as it came out and me and my cousin sat in front of the television playing it for I don't even know how long. I think we nearly started to grow roots into the floor. Ha ha My Mom had to make us turn it off and go to bed. Lol Oh how I miss the good old days. The nostalgia makes me happy whenever I think about it. Two kids playing this through for the very first time was a magical experience. I don't even know the proper words to describe it.,
Fully completed this game a second time in 4 hours, fifty minutes thanks to your help once again. I did this run 3 weeks after the first run which was the first time I completed the game by the way which that run was 100% 5 hours, eleven minutes. I got 100% this run again also. I did use the rewind feature a lot but a lot less than the other run because I’m playing this on the Nintendo Switch.
Same here. I still have my original SNES from my childhood but I first played this on the Wii virtual console. When I started playing it in my 20s, I would run home from work to play this.
Thanks for your help. With you, I beat this game in 5 hours, eleven minutes and did this for the first time as 11 years old. I got 100% of every items and yes, I did use the rewind feature from the a ton of times in the game because I had the option too in the Super Nintendo Emulator.
Super Metroid is my favorite video game of all time. And I still look forward to watching this even though I know the whole game by heart. Also, a bit more detail on the Crystal Flash: what it actually does is convert 1 of each munition into 50 energy. It converts 10 missiles, 10 supers, and 10 power bombs so that will recover a total of 1500 energy, enough to completely fill you to full with all 14 energy tanks, and a bit more into your reserve tanks. Also, although you need 10 missiles, 10 supers, and 10 power bombs to perform crystal flash, you actually need at least 11 power bombs because one is used to perform it. If you have exactly 10 power bombs when you try to crystal flash, the bomb you drop puts you down to 9 and it won't work.
GOAT video game. I replay this game every few years and i think it time i replay again. Love the prelude history and cultural signficance you start your video with.
Ah yes. Finally. I've been waiting for this game since I started watching your channel. This video will be a great way to spend my Saturday while I recover from my flu and Covid shots! I'm going to order some food, then settle in like I'm watching a good movie.
This game holds a special place in my heart ♥. This game I still play to this day and currently playing with my Son (9), and Daughter (7). Just to see them mesmerized how I can still remember this game from so long ago. Even Metroid 1 I'm still quite good at, but SM is on another level for me. Such a classic and I thank YCBVG for featuring this game. ❤❤
Freaky, was just thinking this morning if there was a UCBVG on Super Metroid - far and away a favorite of mine - an lo and behold! Made my Saturday morning.
Yes! Have played this game through a dozen times at least but I was very much looking forward to yer video on it someday. Can’t wait to get home and watch
I remember renting this game one weekend shortly after it came out in the early-mid 90's, before there was any walkthrough, or internet sites with tips or secrets. Watching this now makes me realize how infinitely far I was from making ANY progress in the game lol.
I would say I'm an expert level player of Super Metroid and I have been playing the game since it came out 30 years ago, and I have to say, that you did a fantastic job with this awesome well-produced video. You cover everything, plus give high-level tips and techniques. The maps, info and art you add in on the left side of the screen is a great idea, and you explain everything clearly and speak slowly so everyone can understand what you're saying. This is so well-done and I look forward to watching your other videos. Keep up the great work! 😎
28:37 i've been playing this game since it came out on the SNES and because of this explanation, tonight while hanging out with some friends I performed a mockball for early Supers for the first time ever and it only took three attempts! The endorphin rush was insane. I never thought I would get it so soon or I wouldn't have done it off stream lol. Thank you!!! Your channel is amazing!! I absolutely adore the way you format and present your videos. It really brings me back to the old VHS tips and tricks tapes. Stay Gold 🌟
Remember playing this at a friend back in 94, only finished it today! 30 years later. Absolutely lovely game, the sprite-art is beautiful (as with many Snes games) and hold up even today. Great guide! thnks!
I find super metroid pretty darn easy compared to most of the games you cover but never did a 100%. Appreciate this episode and I always love your documentary style intros!
I don't comment on yt that much, but damn this video is awesome, with so much love and effort and all the maps, pictures and texts on the left side, truly appreciated! keep it up!
Since he was gone a few weeks i figured he was doing another RPG, slightly disappointed it wasn't one, but glad it was one of the best games of all time!
Thanks to your explanation I was finally able to do the Kraid quick kill. All those speedrun tips on webpages and other channels explain it very poorly by telling what inputs one has to do which are nearly impossible for a casual player. But you simply explained how the quick kill works and then I realized what I really have to do and finally did it. Thank you!
Thanks for the company as I played through this for the first time since like 96... (will never let anyone know we played together though. Will take 100% Credit for the 100% and best ending).
The thing i enjoy about this so much is his tone an demeanor are so chill and relaxed. Such a welcome change over the normal super fast speech you normally see.
Dude, I have said it b4, and I will say it again. I absolutely LOVE your channel!!! Sometimes the games aren't for me, but then u go ahead and do a MASSIVE game like super metroid!!! I love your content!!!! Keep up the GREAT work, my friend. 😊 U have a subscriber for life!!!😊
I watch these frim start to finish.... I fall asleep because his voice is so soothing.... Plus it gives his channel a boost by watching an entire 3 hour video. Win win
Bro, your the UNCUT version Of Nintendo Power. To my knowledge, this game never had a strategy guide and you blew the walkthrough wide open! AWESOMENESS!! YOU ROCK! THANK YOU!@ 💯💯💫
My favorite moment in Super Metroid was just before the boss fight against Kraid. You find the dead body of a human soldier, covered in Zebesian insects. You can't interact with it, other than to chase the bugs away, and you don't learn anything about the body or the person it once was, but it makes such a strong impression, especially since it is unique in the game. It tells the player that Kraid is dangerous, and sets an ominous mood that would otherwise not be as prominent.
Story time for the like-minded: I was 13 when Super Metroid released and it was hugely significant to me in at least three ways. First, I won it through one of Nintendo Power's monthly drawing contests. Second, it was the first game that made me realize video games could be art, in that they could elicit an emotional response outside of the gameplay. And third, it was the game that convinced me that games in the new 16-bit era weren't very challenging anymore, but have replaced that with higher playability, and that the old NES still had a lot of value despite the graphics and sound being a lot less advanced. I distinctly remember replaying the first Metroid shortly after finishing Super and appreciating it's total lack of any kind of direction and having to map it myself. This lead to a reevaluation of Zelda 1 vs A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy 1 vs Final Fantasy II (IV) and how similar NES games play against similar SNES ones. A realization came to me that while I preferred the refinement that came with the advancement in technology, something had definitely been lost. I was only a kid at the time and couldn't really put it into words, but that's the way I felt. I realize I'm the minority here.
Great video for SM! I remember one key point about the charge beam that a lot of new players seemed to miss was while having a full charge you'd gain invulnerability to certain projectiles while doing a pseudo-screw attack, not sure if it was a programming oversight or intentional but it was great defensively to have for Sporespawn.
This is still one of the best games of the entire genre named after it, and has aged far, far better than its predecessors. I respect the original Metroid for being the catalyst, but it was *Super* Metroid that I feel was truly exceptional and not just 'for its time'. For a game with virtually no dialogue, it still might manage to make you feel something for the baby metroid at the end, too. There is something to say about the thought and craft that went into games like these, and I consider myself very lucky to have grown up playing them. Saving the animals is such a cool, hidden touch(that I could never find as a kid because that escape timer was always 100% panic and adrenaline), and a really neat cameo in Fusion shows that it's canon that Samus saved them. I love this dang game, thank you so much UCBVG, for bringing me back to nostalgia-town yet again. 😅
Wow your channel has really grown! I dont know whats so appealing about your videos. Maybe its your voice, and careful detailed commentary. Keep it up. I love your videos
Nothing else will beat playing this game with zero context as my first Metroid game in the series not knowing what was going on at all. What a masterpiece…When I finished this game there was only paper guides you couldn’t use on line and I had no friends who played nerd games like I played as a kid and it was the most amazing piece of work I’ve seen in my life. I had no walkthrough and I existed as Samus in the story. It was all I knew and have known as a perfect piece of art as a child. Now I only chase that feeling and games just fight to meet that feeling…
Love your videos. Just completed Super Metroid tonight for my first time ever using this guide and Castlevania 4 a few weeks ago using your other guide. Thanks for these amazing contributions!
Your videos have been instrumental for helping me get into the Metroid series and I can't thank you enough for that. I'm really hoping we can get a Metroid Fusion guide soon
Such nostalgia! By far, my favorite SNES action game and you did it justice as always 😉 I still replay this on the Switch every few months or so just to see what I remember about the item collection and map orientation but you completely nailed it in an effortless manner. I will look forward to future episodes! ❤️
thank you for doing this, i left my old strategy guide outside in the rain. the pages all stuck together. now gamers don't have to find an old one. not all heroes wear capes
Bouhgt the game back in 1994. Still have my SNES, serveral Games but very important the handbook with the secret maps of Super Metroids. Needed over 12hours for my first attempt but replayed it so often until i cleared it under 3h. Thank you so much for teaching me some tricks to try alsmost 30year later. And your Videoediting is superb.
Thank You for finally doing this one, I've been waiting for it. Super Metroid was my 1st Metroid game, I bought it a couple of years ago because I'm going back & getting games I missed as a kid. I didn't get far in this, but its still a good game
I've played this before. It's one of the included games on my SNES Mini. Always a good time! Although, if you're willing to take a little bit of damage, you can get the Wave beam early (before fighting Crocomire). Go through the upper door, and hop across the platforms, then open the gate & jump to the ledge. Back up a few steps, then turn around and sprint to the opposite end & jump right before you step off. You'll fly across to the far side of the spike pit, but you'll have solid ground under your feet (the center is a pitfall). Then, wall-jump up to the red door & open it. Voilà! You now have the Wave beam in your arsenal. As for damage: a fully-charged shot will be able to force Crocomire back about 4 steps.
I'm not a citizen of the US, but If I was one, I would fight for a statue of this man and his dog in a major city. Very well deserved! Thank you my friend, GOD BLESS!
