'Metropolis Title Sequence, 1927'
First year After Effects project at University was a brief to create the opening title sequence to a film. Preferably a film which didn't have one or could be better.
I choose the 1927 film by Fritz Lang, Metropolis. This silent b/w film is about a city which is run by workers who live underneath it.

Been years Edward that I adore this made by yourself!

i genuinely thought this was the official title sequence from a remastered version i hadn't heard of. absolutely astoundingly done, beautifully synchronized with the music and the feel of the movie.

bouffon888, this is so beautiful! I´m sure Mr. Lang would have loved it. The spirit of Metropolis is there. Thank you very much for uploading it.

Thank-you everybody who has commented. Much appreciated. LeenTheGreen: The project was done in After Effects using the build in 'Stroke' plug in. I don't know if you've used after effects before but the basic idea for creating the lines was drawing the outline of the buildings on an adjustment layer with the pen tool then applying the Stroke plug-in to that layer. You can then animate the Start stopwatch on the Stroke plug in to time the drawing of the line.......

Love the symbolism of parts of the names falling. Great job, the only change I would have investigated was having parts of the city start to crumble - perhaps through the use of a reflection (that could symbolize the flood that happens). Though the original was black and white, it was fairly common to have color washes - maybe a little experimentation there could also hint at story points. I do like the Saul Bass style of lines - yours has elements of what made the intro sequence to "Catch Me if You Can" work well.

You can imagine that my comp had over a hundred layers and I had to carefully plan the timing of each line to the music. I had to send the files to a render farm to render because it took way too long at University. Awarh: Thank-you for your comment, nice to see a bit of criticism. Helps me improve. The music is from the film though so it was the best option to use as I wouldn't been able to compose anything myself.

Watch in high quality, much better.

Quite well done. My only suggestion would be slightly different music -- with such a playful quality, the music is almost a bit too serene. Something which reflects the playfulness of the letters shifting about would be nice. Keep in mind this is a SLIGHT criticism. This is absolutely stunning.

Although i created this title sequence in my first year at uni it still remains one of my favourite pieces of work. Id love to hear what you think about it. Thanks.

Cool work. I know the original opening credits. This one is a creative alternative for it, rather in the style of the 1940s or 1950s.
