In the year 1333, the Kamakura Shogunate, which had laid the foundation for the samurai rule of Japan, was destroyed by a rebellion by Takauji Ashikaga, a trusted shogunate vassal. Having lost everything and fallen into the depths of despair, Tokiyuki Hojo, the legitimate successor to the shogunate, escapes from burning Kamakura with the guidance of Yorishige Suwa, a priest who claims to be a god... Tokiyuki runs away and ends up in Suwa, where he meets friends he can trust and gathers the strength to take back Kamakura. He overcomes the great turbulence of changing times by "running away'' and "living'', contrary to the samurai lifestyle of "fighting'' and "dying''.
