He was very entertaining and engaging at a Star Trek convention in Denver Colorado in the late '80s. Very memorable

Scotty actually DID get killed. But Nomad “repaired” the unit. Uhura got her mind wiped in the same episode. Now wonder Starfleet later changed their uniform color to burgundy. Give everybody an equal chance to get hurt or killed.

What happened on the show is minor compared to his real life. James Doohan was part of the Canadian contingent on the D-Day landings. After securing the beach head, he was accidently shot by one of his sentries, and saved from getting shot through the heart by a cigarette case. As is, he lost his right index finger. Undeterred, once his wounds healed, he became an aerial artillery spotter, flying small planes like a Piper Cub over the battlefield and directing artillery fire. He was also known as the craziest flyer in his unit as he would routinely do barnstorming stunts, like slaloming power poles.
