Mewing is an exercise that involves pushing your tongue to the roof of your closed mouth.
It is said to improve your jawline, but there’s debate about whether it actually does.
It’s frequently seen on social media as part of “looksmaxxing.”
“Looksmaxxing” means maximizing your looks.
But most orthodontists say that mewing has no scientific evidence to back it up.
Its creator, Dr. Mike Mew, promotes his theories on RU-vid and through an app. He has amassed a large following and there are many influencers who claim mewing has worked for them.
CBC Kids News contributor Julia Hammerl looks at the trend and whether it can help improve your face.
As part of the research for this video CBC Kids News spoke to:
Dr. Mike Mew, an orthodontist from the U.K. and the creator of mewing.
Dr. Greg Barnett, president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. Sunjay Suri, an orthodontist from Mississauga, Ontario.
Dr. Benjamin Pliska, an orthodontist from Vancouver, British Columbia.
