If I remember correctly, in the documentary Lucha Mexico, they mentioned that when the 1985 earthquake hit Mexico City, Arena Mexico was left undamaged. They cancelled the shows for the rest of the week and used the building as an aid station.
This is why I love being a Mexican we brought a great sport to life with our Wrestlers,Death matches and we can make our own stadium thank you for making this Dave and Que tenga un dia maravilloso mi amigo
Great video and new sub here Dave 👍🏼 nice name! I'm Dave too and we help other Dave's out.. Serious note I wrestle still green but I I am set on learning lucha libre get some experience there and first place to start for me.... The awesome history of Lucha Libre itself! Respect and love for all of Lucha Libre you guys are true stars!! Looking for more info and history so, see ya there..
One thing I wish he mentioned that would demonstrate just how much he was committed to it was that in movies where he isn't playing himself, or even a wrestler, he still wears the mask. There is one where is a cop. It wasn't written with him in mind but when every other recognizeable name rejected it he would be cast. The script remained unchanged so it's never really explained why this police officer wears a mask during the entirety of the movie
@daveknowswrestling dude the influence lucha libre has had…el gran apache in my opinion is the true father or strong style… he trained a lot of Japanese wrestlers(tajiri)… on top of that gory being part of one of the most famous tag teams… la pareja atómica gory guerrero and el santo… knowing that Eddie came from such a pedigree… the backbone of wcw was the cruiserweights incorporated by mostly Mexicans… on top of that the best would go train and learn in Mexico… Chris Jericho had his time in the arena Mexico… the lion sault was established there being his ring name was corazón de Leon…. Lita trained there( who are you to doubt el Dandy) also Vince had el hijo del santo and negro casas on his payroll… imagine…. When santos Escobar had his moment with el fantasma his father being the main authority in wrestling in Mexico…. On top of the induction of mil mascaras… allowing him to tell his story of being a main attraction at Madison square garden… Canek was the hulk hogan of Mexico he actually body slammed Andre the giant lol….
awesome job....Dave definitely knows wrestling....can you do a piece on Paul Bosch breaking away from Fritz and siding with Joe Blanchard and the rift it caused with Gino Hernandez and the Von Erich boys
Hey Dave I'm a new subscriber just found your channel on accident and I'm glad I did. Excellent content I've been binge watching episodes for 2 days since I found it. I wish you woulda booked the intercontinental and wwwf title tournaments you did I would love to hear how you would book them out. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you so much and welcome to the Know-It-All Nation! Further more, I did a sequel video the the IC tournament recently where I DID Book the winner! So you're in luck
Hey Dave did you see that El Santo when intothe Legacy wing of the WWE Hall of Fame over Wrestlemania weekend, just one year after the “Godfather of Japanese wrestling” Rikidozon was inducted in.
If i remember correctly. Arena Mexico, closes, maybe once a year, for repairs. So, you could say, there is a 'Off Season', of Lucha, at Arena Mexico. Check out Jericho's podcast, w/Norman Smiley. They talk about their time in Mexico, workin for CMLL.
Personally, I find Lucha Libre to be the better version of wrestling (next to Sumo.) It's aerobatic, fast-paced, full of unique figures/characters, each wrestler has their own unique style. But most of all, it's rooted in deep traditions dating back centuries ago (to the time of the ancient tribes of the Aztecs.) Whereas American wrestling now follows only ONE face...John Cena. (Note: When I say that Lucha Libre has tradition that dates back centuries. I am speaking of the traditions behind the mask. Whenever Aztecs warriors lost a fight, the loser was beheaded. More to the point, these warriors were said to be wearing unique masks in battle)
@@DaveKnowsWrestling My favorite thing about Lucha Libre is the fact that it knows no height or gender restriction. These days; in WWE and any other current league, women are strictly put up against other women wrestlers and there's nobody who's...shall we say, of Peter Dinklage levels of height in the American leagues these days to put up against the big dogs. Yet, in Lucha Libre; you have great athletes like Sexy Star going up against people outside of her height and weight class. You even have someone like Mascarita Segrada going up against people who are almost six to eight feet tall. That right there is what I like to see most of all
@@sadlobster1 WWE has done intergender wrestling before. It has only been a thing in Mexico in recent years. I personally prefer separate men and women divisions. And in Mexico, they also call American style wrestling, lucha libre.
@@DaveKnowsWrestling cool thanks for the reply UWA was mostly remembered for having great Ras de Lona exihibitions along with some nasty blood baths, if that helps. Also should check Negro Navarro's matches, he's one of the last "maestros" of the ras de lona style still active today. I hope you like it, Lucha Libre has created some of the craziest submission holds through this style.
Very fair.. but look at this as a video, like my British videos.. that focus more on the beginnings of companies. Like the British vids, I tend to do more than just this, because one video on Lucha Libre is not enough. Mil Mascaras and Blue Demon are being planned for the future.. don't worry. But glad to see you know your history
According to Lucha Underground, some of Lucha Libre's origins may also be tied to the ancient tribes of Mesoamerica. Back then; warriors wore war masks into battle and when their opponents lost, the victor would behead them. This is where the idea of claiming the luchadore's mask as a victory prize supposedly came into being. If this is all true, Lucha Libre truly DOES have more to offer than American wrestling (to me)
@@DaveKnowsWrestling You may be right...but then, the ancient tribes DID wear masks and they DID behead their defeated opponents. So, there is some possibility its true. But even if it's not, is going with the kayfabe a bad thing?
@@sadlobster1 The mask came from American wrestling. Cultural traditions have been incorporated into Mexican wrestling masks over the years, and lucha libre does not have it's origins in mesoamerican traditions. Wrestling is the WORLD'S oldest sport. It dates back to ancient Rome, ancient Greece. Lucha Libre is the Spanish word for freestyle wrestling.
Can anyone tell me why Mexican refs count slower than Moses? AAA especially. Pretty sure that u can get 2 or 3 Mississippi between each count. Surprise roll up is practically extinct there. I'm not trying to be mean or anything but I'm extremely curious
I think it became CMLL after EMLL left the National Wrestling Alliance, but they kept using The NWA Middleweight, Lightweight, and Welterweight World Titles
Qué contrastante: El Mejor vs el peor, en todos los aspectos: CALIDAD HUMANA, VALORES, PRINCIPIOS, CARIÑO POR SANTO, ENMASCARADO DE PLATA. Uno, un Señoron, otro, miserable bandido ilegal.
Lots. Lucha doesn't necessarily have to have any high flying at all. How they bump is different. Some of the rules too. There are a bunch of differences
I wanted to get back into pro-wrestling, especially since there isn’t anything new out to watch. I was hardcore into WWF/WWE & a loyal fan...until after 2000ish. It started when Undertaker, went from the “Deadman” with supernatural powers, but then became a biker...with supernatural powers. It felt like they were doing away with eccentric, or the dark mysterious characters. Instead now it seems WWE has really athletic, but regular dudes & chicks, using regular names; which is fine, but to me it doesn’t feel right when a Seth Rollins, who is great, but when he beat the The Fiend, it didn’t make me care about the match - & it was a no holds steel cage. Here is this demon, who is supposed to also have dark powers, gets taken out by a guy with a typical name. I also wasn’t a fan of the brand split, but what really ruined it for me are the shit storylines & cringe promos. Good thing AEW hasn’t shit the bed, but now NJPW is awesome & AAA is getting better.
@@DaveKnowsWrestling I should of mentioned that the it was your channel that how found out about NJPW. So I owe you a huge thanks. I think, at the moment, NJPW is the most entertaining pro-wrestling promotion, followed by AEW. I'm still watching WWE (I subscribe to the network), but thanks to you, your channel opened a whole new world of sports entertainment 😉
@@DaveKnowsWrestling There have been plenty of, 'foreigners', Jericho, Norman Smiley, Ultimo Dragon, Art Barr, Vampiro, Konann, that had HUGE careers in Mexico. I think, it's learning the style. Cos a gimmick's a gimmick, no matter where you are. But the style's change. But yes, there are gimmicks, that are specific, to a country. That's what makes pro wrestling so cool. Its international. You don't see, American pro football/basketball/baseball teams, traveling the world, playing against, pro foreign football/basketball/baseball teams. I've gone on a tangent. Imma big lucha fan. I've watched this vid a few times. Good Stuff.
In Mexico, they also call American wrestlers, luchadors. It simply means wrestler, or fighter in English. If you mean a "Mask" gimmick, well the mask has existed in American wrestling since the old days. It is just more popular in Mexican wrestling.
You should that lil island was wwe competition... the rise and fall of Puerto Rican wrestling. Puerto Rico used to draw a lot of money you have no idea Bruiser Brody dead ruin Puerto Rican wrestling you need help let me know
Masks have been around wrestling for as long as I can remember. Even in the territory days. You never heard of The Assassin's, The Spoiler, Mr.Wrestling I and II, The Grappler, The Masked Superstar, The Super Destroyers, The Destroyer, The Patriot, etc
