19-year-old Jonathan González has a big future with Mexico. However when Jona, a Mexican-American who represented the United States in his youth, chose to play for El Tri in 2017, many American soccer fans were irate. Now, hear from Jona and his family directly, and follow his pursuit of a spot on Mexican National Team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
This is the 1st episode of a 3-part series we are producing with JUGOtv, presented by Allstate, an official sponsor of the Mexican National Team. ©2018 MNT™

Interesting topic, but we wanna know - Mexican-American & other Hispanic-American youth players, do you dream to play for the US or Mexico/country of your family's heritage? Or both? And WHY? Let's hear it 👇 (Cuéntanos en español si quiere)

I want people who play for Mexico to play for Mexico because they love Mexico. I do not want them to flip flop for petty reasons or anything. And im grateful that he picked us, but i want the youth to know that when shit hits the fan, you will only have the love and pride of the country to pull you through. Play for love and passion, not for fashion. Not for money. Not for being snubbed.

Darksky1001able that part of it. Some players want fame and notoriety. I can't think of any well known Mexican american player in the us team off the top of my head. I can think of some who declared allegiance to Mexico despite playing for the US youth sides. For mexican american i think they will get that notoriety in Mexico than on the US.

Bro I'm born in California but I'm Mexican. Mexico is my first team for World Cup but I also cheer for U.S.A when they don't play Mexico. I also love Brazil because I grew up watching them too when I was a little kid with my grandpa. But Mexico forever my first love, but I still got Love for U.S. team and I hope they get it together and become a real threat in world cup soon. Can't wait to see soccer grow bigger in the U.S. !!!. Europe teams are always at the top though like Germany, Spain and France.. it's a beautiful sport it brings many people together. VAMOS MEXICO! And also good luck to the underdogs this year like Panama, Egypt and Iceland

It's a hard choice. Sometimes it feels like us chicanos (Mexican-Americans) feel out of place. Like it's been said before, Americans see us just as Mexicans and Mexicans say we are not Mexican enough. That we are too "white". It comes down to what country you can connect to more. The love and support of family and true friends make the choosing process a little bit easier but at the end of the day whatever you choose you will still be considered ungrateful or a traitor in a sense. It's fucking hard for us but we have to have the balls and mental strength to ignore all that negative noise. Do what you feel deep down is right and good luck 😁. I support anyone who is trying to succeed and transcend in life. ✌🏻

I never amounted to making it professional as a player, but if I was ever given the same opportunity as Jona, I would’ve selected Mexico form the beginning. Even though I was born and raised in California, I grew up watching Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Jared Borgetti and Rafa Marquez and watching Mexican soccer so I have an attachment to La Selección Mexicana that is nonexistent with the USMNT. I hate the USMNT as much as they hate the Mexican side

@JSA24laker
@JSA24laker 6 лет назад
Exactly, and from an early age you're put in a position where you're too American for the Mexicans but too Mexican for the Americans. I grew up playing for Mexican coaches in a Latino based league, and it wasn't until high school where I spoke English to a coach. I already love supporting the Mexican national team, I would die if I ever had the chance to play for them. It would just be a completely different feeling playing for the USMNT.
@2010Juve
@2010Juve 6 лет назад
Still messed up. Like most Americans, our families came here for a better life. The US gave us a future, a good one, and to play for a nation that ultimately failed our people(mexico), I just don't get it. I would never play for Mexico. They are a failed state who couldn't give us what the US has given us. I'm so damn grateful everyday that my people left and came to the USA. Its a slap in the face to this land, and this country to play for another nation.

I saw an interview on Univision of Jonathan explaining why he ended up choosing the US over Mexico. One of the reasons he said was because he felt discriminated within the US national teams that he was part of by fellow “American” players and coach alike. So the truth is, that discrimination made him realize that he could not represent a country that didn’t even value him as an American, let alone a player...

The question of "would you play for the US or Mexico" is totally misleading in this case because while Jonathan was given the opportunity to play for the US national team, there were a ton of other avoidable circumstances that pushed him towards Mexico and which highlights the complete failure that is US soccer. People sadly need to realize sports in the US are run like a business; to make money not to grow talent the way the rest of the world does it. In sports where there isn't major competition from other countries and pipelines like high school football/baseball which keeps the talent close to home (and gives kids from poorer backgrounds a decent opportunity to play at the elite level) this works; in sports like soccer it fails miserably. Gonzalez was discovered at a talent showcase in the US as a kid and surprise, he got THIRTEEN Liga MX offers while getting little attention from US soccer's ONE FULL TIME SCOUT or any kind of top tier US youth clubs because it's all pay to play in the US so they don't even look at areas where most of the kids can't afford the high costs (US soccer has numerous times been referred to by people familiar with it including past players like Hercules Gomez as purely a "suburban sport" where only kids from means have a real chance). Of course there's also no academy system like in Germany so you can't secure him that way. The fact that Mexico was the only place he got an opportunity to play back in 2014 as a youth and where he already works and lives just makes it that much easier for Mexico to take him down the road. With all the turmoil and uncertainty around US soccer as people were fired after missing out on the World Cup, you'd think it might be time to do an outreach and assure the young players they'll be a part of the future. So the US call up all the young players for the Portugal friendly in November after being eliminated from the World Cup!! Except they don't even contact Gonzalez. He's reportedly upset with them not even calling him, Mexico gets wind of the situation and sends numerous coaches to talk to him face to face or over the phone and surprise, he now plays for Mexico (despite the fact that all along he actually wanted to play for the US instead of Mexico). And before you argue "he left for a chance to play at the 2018 WC", he's only 19 he already knew there was a slim chance of making the team and almost none of playing much; this was far more about his future. As an American from a different minority background who's just gotten into football the last few years it's disgusting to see how primitive US soccer is. In a country with such a large immigrant population, particularly that come from less means than the average in the US, you'd think things like scouting, academies, and just in general making your talent pool from lesser means and minority backgrounds feel included would be a good idea. Particularly when that talent pool has dual citizenship and can go play for other soccer powerhouses.

If he loves Mexico so much and wishes to represent that country, then he should move there and renounce his US citizenship. I will never understand the blind "love" and devotion Hispanics born and raised in the United States have for the country(ies) of their parents; countries that never gave them a goddamn thing. It's one thing to be proud of your heritage and ethnic identity, but it's another thing to turn your back on the country that gave (and continues to give) you and your family opportunities that hundreds of millions of people across the underdeveloped world would kill for. It's downright ungrateful and disgusting.

Lol not really. While it did suck that a potential good player left, it is what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️. The USMNT still has a lot of younger players coming up and should be getting better as a program.

We can have more kids go pro but the problem is money, support. I say from experience. I grew up playing soccer and I played for the second academy team ( where you pay) but then they called me up for the official academy team but my parents didn’t want to drive all the way to L.A. no more. So I lost the opportunity to play with the academy of L.A. Galaxy for free. Then they put me in club but later took me out cuz of money. And where I live the clubs are in the lowest flight ( I think it’s 3 ) it goes by 1 the best to 3 the lowest. And there’s no scouts here and my team doesn’t get far. So now I have to work and try to get to L.A. to tryout again. I’m 17 now

My mom is from mexico and my dad is from Jordan but I dont give a shit about either. I would never choose a country that I know nothing about over usa. to represent another country other than USA, a country that has given me pride and a good life is stupid. Who cares about roots its where you were brought up, and I was born and raised in USA🇺🇸🇺🇸

Bobby I just accepted it basically my whole life i was called a mexican although i was puerto rican but i guess its a stupid generalization of us due to us being hispanic and i get most of americas latin population is mexican and thats how i accept it because if you saw a canadian and american standing next to each other without hearing a word from them you probably couldn't tell same with the asians (btw cambodians are the dark asf asians and the vietnamese are most likely going to be the ghetto ones in your school)

Talk about low self esteem and "playing the victim". I've never felt belittled by anyone because of my ethnicity. If you live in America and are thankful for all America has given you, then goddamn it, be proud to be an American! No matter what some racist piece of trash says or thinks. Does racism still exist in America? Yes...just like most everywhere else in the world. Should you let it keep you down? Fuck no!
