Carolyn from Luscious Garage repairs a Prius transmission with a bad MG2 stator winding. For more info on this problem, see: lusciousgarage.com/blog/gen_1_... Editing by Bay Area Pictures
Luscious mechanic! My hero...Haynes manual said I would have to pull the motor and trans to change MG2...now I'm not so afraid of the repair if I need to do it on my 02.
I'm so glad I found this. Thinking about a used Prius to save the planet yadda yadda. Heard horror stories about the Generators going bad and costing $5k., making a prius a throw away car. Ya'll need a shop here in Florida.
I do not find any video of some one doing the test with the megger , because you will have to do previos testing diagnosis to replace those parts , do you have any video showing diag the 3 face motor expected numbers mh??
Question: Does the transmission oil circulate through and around the MG2 Stator and rotor, to pull heat away from the coils and lubricate the rotor bearings?
My generation two Prius, 2006 has somewhat of a vibration/shutter in certain high torque RPMs. this is true at any speed, so it seems to be inside the transmission. Also it does not seem to be providing very much in the way of regenerative braking. That could be due to the battery not being able to accept that much charge I suppose, Do you think these two things together would suggest a partially bad MG2 that is out of balance somehow? There are no codes.
Forgetting warranties, would it be possible to install the 04' prius MG2 rotors (with the v-shaped, 150% power permanent motor magnets) into a gen1? If so, would that be a mild improvement in efficiency even without the 500v via the boost converter/proper software? Remember now. we forgot about warranties. This is a track use idea- could you install a gen II inverter, battery pack, and MG1 and 2? Are connectors, wiring/plugs and software similar or not?
I bought one of those transmissions from a salvage yard 200 bucks, I turned it into a generator and works good for that application, the stator in my unit was like new with 100K on it. All I can say is that the labor was a bit high but a new stator is expensive either way. I don't know all the steps taken but I hope the owner got a 6 month warranty on the work.
Thank you very much i took the mg2 out and looks new it was replace the fluid was very bad black i think is was getting over heating and is stop charging and give me the insulation code and red triangle hopefully is the fluid
I have a Toyota Alphard 2007 Hybrid and I need to replace the MG2 Stator could you please help me with the correct technical name for this and the correct part number for this part? If you have a supplier I could contact to place and order that would be fantastic... Thank you in advance
amazing just amazing!! you the only one who show how to do that job.. let me ask you a question my 2010 prius show a HYBRID SYSTEM that means my high voltage battery is going bad??
Putting practicalities aside (warranty/come backs) would it be worth looking into someone rewinding the stator? I have taken several odd motors to a Fresno shop and he has been able to rewind my stuff every time. One you get a pile of these stators, it might be worth repairing a few via assembly line.
Hi Carolyn, i need some help. I'm having hv leak issues on my prius 2. I realize that my inverter coolant leaking somewhere internaly. I already inspected externaly and no any drops at all. I'm also having some problems such as spare parts in my country, no body knows what to do. do you have an email adress so you might help me?
Late reply, I know, but the answer is totally yes. The ATF T-IV in the transaxle is sufficient for cooling, but only for so long. Toyota never services the fluid, but replacing the transaxle fluid is really easy. You just have to drop the pan (new gasket = 13$ from toyota) and make sure you use the right fluid. The cooling system is good, the fluid is not immortal. That's my understanding, anyway! :)
Most likely the coil in the stater fried because coils are magnets and The coil wires clack together or against each other with magnetic compression Causing the enamel coating on the coil wire to wear way and then that creates a short in the coil and that will burn it and make it turn black like I see here in your video.
g quin Lol, thanks but I don’t feel like one. But thanks for the kindness. I needed to keep this from happening to a coil in a crazy invention of mine many years ago and found out that I could epoxy the coil wire as I wound it and I also used a vacuum sealer bags to suck epoxy into the coil to glue it and keep my high voltage coils from burning out like this. If the manufacturer did this simple and cheap thing to all could then they will last indefinitely because it keeps the micro magnetic impressions from moving the wires against themselves or clacking together at a micro level. Th s has saved my coil from ever going bad since I went this route. Hope that Helen s other’s.
I Am wondering if it is a possibility that the wiring for the "stater" could possibly just be checked more accurately for short-aging. My dad serves as an electrician here in Ohio, USA. He has been one since I was a baby. I have learned that Shortages connecting with other shortages, even really, really small ones; can cause arching and arching causes fires if the components are able to become flammable. Is this something that could be looked into? I think it would be worth the effort.
Shoot 1000v through the windings with a Fluke insulation test meter. You should get 2.2G at each winding if they're good. Anything else and the windings are bad.
Are you talking about using a megger? Unless there is a possibility of a short causing greater damage I guess it wouldn't matter if one just let the stator fail completely.. getting as many miles as possible. Of course, there is the inconvenience of having a complete failure in the middle of nowhere. I am viewing this just as a plain old electric motor. I don't know anything about the monitoring or software of the car that would cause weird driving if the car is trying to compensate.
You think by any chance the transmission may not have a sufficient cooling system, which is why these stators have such a high failure rate? Can't say I'm very familiar with the Prius. I'm askin cause I've been in the auto repair industry almost 10 years myself but am just startin to learn transmission diagnostics and repair and wanted to hear from somebody more familiar with these particular vehicles and transmissions.
I was wondering if the oil was mainly lube for the gears. One can see that there is no oil in the windings and there does not appear to be any oil circulation around the stator housing..So.. does neglecting oil changes really affect stator life?
There is only three things out to destroy your stator. One is heat next is corrosion and the last is a bent armature rubbing. The quality of oil will help keep the heat in check in the surrounding metal. Prolonging your stators life.
WS Fluid is not synthetic and has limited life. Tests from Blackstone Labs show lots of heat degradation. REDLINE D6 is a Group 4+ Synthetic that will protect much better. I have 3 Prii and the D6 quieted down my V which had excessive regen noise from the factory.
im selling this part on ebay rn for cheap!!!get it while you can!!! shame they scrap these cars cus the epoxy wire insulation fails on the coil!!- they will be collectors items one day
Here’s the secret to this issue. I’m an audiophile and we audiophiles know about how transformers that are made with enamel shielding on the magnet wire wares off because it’s a magnet coil and with each cycle it compresses the entire coil at a micro level and over time of this constant compression and decompression the wires rub against each other and eventually a short is created thus burning the stator. Oil all black like that. We also know to keep that from happening you sinned to just put the finished wound coil into a vacuum with some sort of glue or epoxy or even varnish to glue the wires together so they cannot compress and rub each other in that compression and decompression process, thus no ware or short from it. End of problem.
