The price in New Zealand for that model is just over 29000 Euro including 15% goods and services tax. As NZ and Australia both have free trade agreements with China, there are no tariffs on their vehicles here. The VW ID3 is not sold here, but the ID4 is approx 34000 Euro.
This is a terrible review. The base model? Why? The Essence MG4 is a more interesting car. Android Auto isn’t the only smart device worth mentioning (just a hint!) Your comments must be based on OLD firmware.
The MG4 was Europe’s 4th best selling EV in 2023, outselling the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Mégane E-Tech, despite the fact that MG is currently not available in all European countries.
I do like the design of the id3 but the touch controls are the work of satan, the car is slow and interior nasty. Come on VW do better. Golf 7.5 last good car made. @@MarekDrivesENG
MG's SW is its biggest issue, that and the dealer behaviour. You don't have the outside temperature because they didn't bother updating the damn thing. There are now multiple SW updates which drastically improved customer behaviour as well as making the lane keep assist more livable. I have the UK trophy version (believe that's luxury spec in the EU) and I definitely miss having a heat pump but I would no way in hell pay 5-7k more just to have a VW. Right now, keep your eye on BYD, they are rapidly coming from behind and will likely overtake many legacy manufacturers, making MG have to fight for its position even more.
This MG sells for around £11000 in China where its made so add £500 for transport and 20% rip off tax so about £14000 in the UK the rest is pure profiteering nothing else
I heard a theory on DW that Chinese brands are keeping prices higher for Europe to avoid being associated with low quality. Assuming this is true, it also gives them some wiggle room if they get slapped with a tax in the EU.
It's a nice looking EV. I've seen quite a few of them around where I live (Manchester, UK). Still too much for me. I've just bought a year old Ioniq Hybrid that is incredibly cheap to run, and I'll stick with that for now.
My car, bought nearly a year ago, has the outside temperature display. Its removal was a bug introduced by a subsequent software update. The good news is there is an even more recent software update that fixes that and quite a few other things. I've just been on to my dealer to arrange to have this update applied.
I have a 64kwh Trophy LR in the UK. Really love it and it has an outside temperature sensor! If driven sensibly I can get a great range especially in the summer. Thanks for your review.
Seems reasonable enough aside from the annoying mandated assists and strong regen default. I recently discovered regen braking causes me to be profoundly motion sick. It's something I've struggled with all my life but the combination of high torque and aggressive regen is really pushing the buttons. Most EV and hybrid taxis here are set up this way.
They are quite popular here in Australia. Approx $40k AUD, so very well priced. Not too sure about your comment re VW quality. My experience with VW has been that they are very unreliable. Having said that, I don't think I'd buy an MG4 either. Concerned about reliability and resale value.
I was referring to the general interior quality in VWs. Also I never had any problems with VWs (including those in my family). I just think the new ones (Mk8 Golf, etc.) are crap :)
Why don’t charging cables fit in the rear hatch - where plastic trim cover is on the inside in the area directly behind the number plate but accessed from inside the boot? When hatch it opened cables immediately accessible. To store under the floor is daft as have to empty the boot when full.
EV tech is moving so fast that i'm not considering changing until my car is economically unviable to repair but I do like to keep up to date with the progress and MG has moved things forward. Will see what Telsa Model 2 does and next generation of ID3 possibly if they fix the controls and improve the cabin quality and power. Right now if my car died i'd probably get a used BMW 330e or a mark 7.5 Golf Gti, both lovely cars and good used buys with good mix of economy and driving joy.
Fully agree. We just got a 2020 Kia eSoul fully loaded slightly used for 15000km and still 3 years on the Kia warranty for 25000 Euro. That is the competition for this car. The Kia is our first all electric, so its going to be interesting.
buy a toyota lexus hybrid much reliable, dump the ev anxiety, evi expensive repair costs will wipe out all your ev savings 3 times more than petrol ice cars, ev are worth paying only £2k because of expensive repair costs when it becomes faulty
I'm laughing my head of at the pathetic android auto. I bought a new headunit for my car that has wait for it... Instant turn on, wireless android auto and full android! 8 core, 12gb ram and 0.5Tb of storage for 300ish euro. With trim to fit specially my car. Rear camera 1080p. Fully 1080p display etc.
Unfortunately all the cheap EVs, and even some of the more expensive ones, seem to have crappy underpowered infotainment systems. As far as I can tell the only company to put enough grunt into it was Tesla, even though I dislike their all-touch-screen approach at least they did it well.
By pressing the regen settings while the one pedal is active, then pressing the one pedal when it is a swipe function, demonstrates either incompetence, or a malicious attempt to demonstrate an irrasponsive screen.
I'll keep my Mk6 Golf gti thankyou very much. 14 years old and just sailed though the MOT. Thats a cheap car. If I bought this thing I'd never recoup the savings in 10 years and stuck with joyless, souless highly depreciating car. Saying that this was a fair review well done.
I changed my 2009 Golf GTi Mk6 for this car and I'm absolutely delighted with it! The car is giving me even more joy than the GTi did, though it's hard to explain why. The car actually seems to have *more* personality, which I wasn't really expecting. And the drive quality? Wow! Have you actually driven an MG4? Because if you haven't, I don't think you have much ground for declaring it joyless or soul-less. And who knows about depreciation? Only time will tell, and I don't really care, because I have every intention of keeping the MG4 as long as I kept the Golf, and any residual value by that time is gravy.
35000 euros base model for this chinese crap? At the moment of this comment in my country there are brand new skoda octavia RS with 245hp that sell for the same money. Who in the world would buy this crap instead of that? 🙄
@@natoftw Do these people exist? Who in the right mind would go for this instead of 10 times better car? What are the benefits of throwing 35k for this orange apliance over the Skoda RS for example?
@@strezificationcheaper running cost? Some people doesnt care about 245hp, they just want something that is cheap to run that can get them from A to B
@@ohongho If you know at least something about cars you would know that the higher initial price and the negligible diference in running cost per mile still benefits fossil fuel cars on the short and long term. EVs are just a big scam for liberal brainwashed sheeps which brain is shuted down 24/7
