MGB Tuneup Part 3: SU Carburetor Balance and Mixture Adjustments

One of the biggest misconceptions about old cars is that a tune-up on a Triumph TR6 or an Austin-Healey involves changing the plugs and turning a screwdriver on the carburetors. That's simply not enough, and it's a large part of the reason why they have a reputation for being unreliable. We take an MGB through a more comprehensive procedure.
In this video, we do a quick check of ignition advance, and then finally look at a set of SUs. Balancing carburetors seems like an art, but honestly it's no more difficult than hanging a picture frame to make it level. You just need a tool so that you know what "level" is, and adjust what you're doing accordingly. On most SUs, adjustments are made by simply turning a screw to change balance, or by turning a nut at the bottom to change mixture.
It IS important to check one thing with SUs that I didn't do in the video. After your adjustments, re-tighten the linkage. Then, with the air cleaners off, rev the throttle and look at the behavior of the air pistons. They should rise and fall at the same rate. If they don't, you need to tweak the linkage (not the throttle stop or the mixture) by loosening it, repositioning slightly, then tightening it back up. What's happening is that the linkage may be acting on one carburetor before the other... so it could be off throughout the entire rev range except where it was just set at idle.
We'll continue through until we (finally) get to adjusting the carbs... but follow along. You can tweak those SUs as much as you like, but whether you have an XKE or a Spitfire, your car can run terribly if the distributor isn't working properly!

Very nice video and i got a question regarding puting oil on K&N fitler. Could you explain or make a video on how to do it and the purpose of it? What type of oil to use, etc. Greetings from Poland 😃

A video on that would be a good one. I'll add to the queue. Basically though, K&N filters have more open space between the weave of the fibers than a typical paper filter. It's also made of a cloth type medium instead of paper with a bunch of fibers hanging out--so they catch debris in a different way. With a K&N (and also with lots of older classics like my Austin-Healey which has a wire mesh filter), the oil stuck to the filter is what traps dirt. Then you can wash the oil off, which has suspended all the stuff that sticks to it, and you have a clean filter again. Re-oil and put it back in and you're good to go! With a paper filter, you can't really clean it off, and it might be more restrictive (though engineers will design the intake with that in mind). Basically, clean the filter once a year or so when you change the oil. Take it off the car, clean it (K&N makes a filter cleaner), let it dry, and spray some new oil on it. Then it's ready to keep protecting your engine!

MGBs are great cars. Congratulations! Hopefully these videos help. Keep in mind that pretty much everything crosses... so videos featuring a Triumph or Healey will still help you in most cases.

Just found your videos. Very well done. My 73 mgb had gummed up carbs, so I rebuilt both. Now in order to get the car to run, the choke needs to be out. Even after it warms, pushing the coke control in causes the engine to die. I'm completely stumped. Can you offer some help?

Either the mixture is incorrect, or the throttles aren't synchronized or far enough open. You could also have a vacuum leak or some other source of air that's not supposed to be there.

How can you use a timing light when the mark in on the bottom of the engine

Unfortunately you'll need to be under the car to read it. Jack stands are a must, but the cords should reach.
