Here to relieve the commenters concerned about the child actor: he was completely fine during the music video. There's a BTS video that shows him laughing and playing with the monster animatronics before they even attempted filming him. The mother was always close by in case he got too scared. The crying parts were mostly of him being upset at other things which were edited in post to make it look like the monsters were scaring him

That kid is either doing some intense lifetime therapy or never going to be scared of anything in their life haha

This child is at least 12 years old now, in about two or three more years he will probably be able to tell us if the filming of this video clip affected him or not.

I was a new mom the year this song came out and this video devastated me. The song brought out this sense of nostalgia, mourning my childhood and anxiety at having to be a grown up and take care of this baby who needed me so much. The dangers of the world really come into focus when you're a first time mom and wanting to protect this precious baby from everything but knowing you can't- at least not forever. Now my "baby" is 16 and I'm having to learn to let go as she grows into an amazing young woman. It's scary. So here i am watching this video and crying, again.

This shows how the baby is just learning about the scary things in life while the mom is already used to it so she just thinks that he’s overreacting

My daughter played this song for me years ago. I loved it. She's passed away now. 2 yrs ago from an overdose. She relapsed after half a year clean and the music we shared hurts like hell to listen to. But it also makes me feel closer to her. This one's for you Jess. Thinking of you my girl. ❤

I've never heard of MGMT, but I was on an Empire of the Sun music binge and I saw comments about the similarities/reminiscence to MGMT. After checking MGMT out, I can safely say that I see what people were saying, and I love it! Adding this band to my playlist!

I love the way this video portrays how the child sees things and his perspective of the harsh, ugly world around him, & his mom just sees "normal" life because its what she's grown used to seeing her whole life. She is desensitized & blind to what it really is that has him terrified..

This is amazing and crazy at the same time. I liked MGMT a lot in my teenage years and today, watching the video clip (perhaps for the second time) but with today's awareness, I realized that this boy was me, and not only with things that frightened me in physicality but also abuse in other dimensions because I saw many "not so good things", until as an adult I was able to cope better and realize that I can look at my shadows. Anyway, many of us who are super sensitive as children and are being obsessed in some way, whether karmic or not, end up asking to stop seeing. On reflection, there may be someone out there who makes sense to you. You are not alone and they can cease to exist as soon as you lose your fear of them, and you are super special!

This is a really great representation of how terrifying childhood really is….sometimes I’ll come across some movie clip I seen when I was really young and I swear I remembering it being just the most insane scary thing ever, then find out 30 years later it’s just a sad pile of silicon and corn syrup.

I can only imagine the kid being a grown up looking back at this clip and thinking "What the hell were these people thinking putting me through this?"

Considering if they didn’t completely traumatize the child, this was an incredible take on how scary the world is when ur young. Specially with such a vivid imagination already… I love how they portray the mother as oblivious too…. Like our parents will often write off children’s fear of monsters, or when they say they see something in their room and say something like “oh, you just have an . overactive imagination”… Exactly.. & that’s what makes it all the more terrifying… doesn’t make it any less real to that child
