Not only. In East Germany we have used the same "russian methods" at Mi-2, Mi-8 and Mi-24. We have used for this the outdated charts from meteorological office. Simple but effective. And a very little bit dangerous. If you hit with the aluminum tube the blade you have won the jackpot. Then you have to change the glasses of five blade contour ilumination lights. I never forget the bubbles on my hands from screwdriver. 😢😂

We used a long roll of paper at the end of the pole. Our test pilot was very experienced with this method, he would slowly bring us in to take the measurements. Its a combined effort. We did have one mechanic roll on the side once with the pole. It was his first time 😂. ​@dhmik1
