I am crying laughing at the “booooo” because that sounds exactly like my son. 😂 oh, these kids! Thank you SO much for this deep dive into Miacademy! I was on the fence but.. I think we’re diving in as our main curriculum based on this video!
This was absolutely fantastic review! Thank you so much for showing examples and just how thorough you were! Definitely helped a homeschool mom like me make a decision 🥳✨
I was looking into homeschools and saw this one. I was very curious and I'm glad I came across your video. I'm going to talk to her dad about it but I really think this would be the one for her.
This seems like a no brainer. We are finishing up Time 4 Learning with my kindergartener and it was good but I added curriculum to include biblical studies and spanish/sign launguage. This has all of that and it's not an additional cost 😲
Appreciate this video! Considering using them full time. Do you mind letting us know who to get in contact with for a trial period in exchange for video reviews?
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool signed up for a trial can one only listen to a lesson and not do the practice on a trial? or the quiz? How does it work? if you can't see how it all works how can I tell if I want to get it for my kids ??? is my setting wrong or something? thanks for your help (ps we watched the entire teaching)
You should have full and normal access with the trial. So, you are trying a lesson, you watched the video and you can’t get to the quiz? If there is a PDF available, you may need to click on that first. I’m thinking that might be why it’s stuck. They may be info you need in the PDF before you can do the quiz. Then with the quiz, you will have to get to a certain level before the lesson is considered complete. I don’t know if that helps.
Do they do the learning path when they log in? Or do they go to the "all lessons" I just downloaded and am confused on what they click on to get started on.
I don’t have access to this any more, but it does take some fiddling around to figure out. I would first go into the parent section and decide what you want to assign. Then see what it looks like on their end. I can’t remember what options they have. I think it ships be the learning path vs all lessons..
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool thank you so much for the reply! We did our first day using miacademy yesterday. I'm pretty sure the learning path pulls from their lessons. I had them do both, for now. Until we learn it better. We were doing Time4Learning before this, and this is already so much better. We are doing the free trial version for the month. Do u know if the languages come with the $36 a month, or is this something I will have to pay extra for once the trial is over??
hi! I did miacademy all year as a primary for my kinder this year we'll be doing 1st grade. my child actually really liked it! and the PDF's are very handy when you want to do activities based on what the lesson is. I kept a folder of them and I found it very helpful. We also have a bunch of other workbooks outside of the computer when it will be just a screen-free day . I highly recommend this program to anyone. OH and also I chose to do this program vs the other ones because its the only one that had a Social studies curriculum,so I didn't have to go order something for her to learn basics
The video lessons vary in length... maybe 5-15 minutes. Then there is a quiz that will take your child as long as it takes. And there are PDF downloads that you can do to get a deeper understanding. I think each subject should be completed each day in 20-40 minutes generally.
So, this is accredited only as a supplementary curriculum. But, accreditation is not necessary for anything under high school. Once you hit high school, accreditation MAY work, but it may not depending on what the high school wants to do.
@FreedomBarbie37 you can definitely do this as your primary school. We didn’t just because I like to do so many other things, but I know people who use mostly just this for their kids school.
I found your video today due to seeing miaacademy today on a ad. I currently use time4learning for my 6th and 1st grade daughters. My 6 year old cannot stick with time4learning due to it being childlike for her taste. However, my 13 year doesn't mind it. Today enrolled my 6 year old into Mia academy and knocked out her first day within 1hour. I was watching her and she seemed to enjoy it. I'm gonna do the 30 day trial, I hope she sticks with it.
Oh! I hope this works out for you. We only use this as a fun thing on the side, so long term don’t have experience using it full time. I hope this is the solution you were looking for.
@workfromhome411_ we finished off our one year. Online programs don’t generally work out the best for us. My kids were clicking on random things (not in this app, but just in general) and we were getting viruses. So we quit all things online. We prefer books to online programs anyways. But they had fun while we had it. We never planned on using it long term.
Are you still using this curriculum?? I am checking into it but I can imagine my child getting bored rather quickly with what seems to look like it may become very visually repetitive with little variety in information delivery styles etc. Thoughts ?
We only used this supplementally for about a year. We are not really online curriculum people. The kids liked it, but we’re not upset when we didn’t renew our subscription. It will work better for some kids than others… and I always tell parents to go with their gut. If your gut is telling you that your child will not enjoy this, it is probably not the curriculum for you.
You are welcome! Check out my other videos for lots of homeschooling tips and tricks. And if you want a How to Start Homeschooling series to talk you through the whole process, I have a whole playlist for you!
I have spent the whole week stressing, trying to find an online option for my son for all subjects except math (we are doing Beast Academy). NONE of the videos I watched were anywhere near as helpful as this one was! Just signed us up for Miacademy! Thank you so much!
I cannot be 100% sure, but I feel like Miacademy is a "neutral" curriculum. Meaning, it will not teach things like evolution, and it will not have any religion in the main curriculum. There is a Bible class option, but that is disabled unless the parent enables it.
That is so great! I love it when homeschool kids enjoy what they are using to learn. I grew up homeschooled too, and there were definitely times I enjoyed school more than others.
Thank you so much for this review bc they are few and far between. Love when your sons eyes lit up when he said he had learned about money !! Going to give this a try with my 7 yo.
This video was great as we try to figure out homeschooling! Quick question, how does this satisfy the state? Or do you have to...or how do you make it all legit? I don't know how to ask this question properly 😁 but you know what I mean?
So, I’m most states, you can use any curriculum you want to meet requirements. So, if you need samples for a portfolio, you can print off some of the PDFs. It’s covers bunch of subjects, so you may need to find 1-2 things if your state requires subjects that this doesn’t have (ours requires 11 subjects over their homeschooling time and I think it would cover all that).
I have a question and I hope that you see it. As a parent are you able to see beforehand that there is a pdf to print off? The program we are using now I never see there is a print off. My son see them in his lesson, but he skips them and never tells me.
That is an excellent question! And I had to go look into that. But, yes, you can look at all the lessons and find any printouts you might need to print off.
Thank you for this! I'm not even all the way through the video and I've already made my decision based on the info you've given. So helpful. Also, not sure if you answered this, but how long does each lesson typically take from start to finish?
The videos are typically 5-10 mins long and then the "quiz" can take as long as your child takes to get the information. If you choose to print out the PDFs, those activities could take an indefinite amount of time. I think that if I were using this program full time... I would do some of the lessons just with the video and quiz (maybe the subjects that your child just GETS), and I would try to take the time to do some of the PDF activities for the subjects that the child might need more help with. So, just the video and quiz, probably about 20-30 mins and if you do the PDFs, then maybe allot 30-60 mins to help you child get the concept?
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool thank you for taking time to reply. Do they review any of the information from earlier lessons at a later date? Or do they learn something once and then it never comes up again? Sorry for so many questions, we would be using the program full-time as potentially our only program!
Based on my experience with it, I don’t see a ton of reviews on topics in social studies and science. But with math or LA, they probably cycle through the topics each year or 2 and add on. Overall, not a ton of review as far as I can see.
this says alot: someone in thread asked: Are you still using this? and the creator of this video says: Nope… we did it for almost a year, but we were having some problems with kids’ inappropriate use of computers (getting viruses because of random clicking, etc). So I went completely off line. We really prefer a physical books curriculum anyways. It was fun as simmering on the side, but never for our own main curriculum (for our family anyways). me again- id like to know if there is any way to remove access to click on anything like this? is there any way to 100% safeguard this possibility of clicking on any viruses if we turn off the socializing portion?
So, I will say that I don’t think that this program was the culprit for us. It was typing.com and the ads that are on there on the unpaid account. Really, any time you have a child on the computer, you run the risk of inappropriate use. We do have a system on our computers now that should alert us to any inappropriate content, but that’s only a bandage. I do think that there are ad blockers you can purchase. But, I’m the end, make sure your kids are not on devices unattended (or have access when you are not there), and teach them how to avoid the dangers online.
Awesome review, I think you just talked me into Clever dragons for my sons. This will be our first time homeschooling, I was feeling very overwhelmed after searching and searching for “how to” homeschool online from Facebook pages to looking up just random things until finally I decided to look up reviews for some programs I’ve come across and I’m feeling better. Doesn’t seem as hard as I thought. I should have just started here 😂Thank you!
So I can’t tell you the specific MI laws, but this video will walk you through the process of finding it for yourself and how to interpret some of the law by giving some examples from the WA law: How to Homeschool in Washington | New Homeschooler's Guide to Understanding Washington State's Laws ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qZobDbE6phc.html
This was SOOO helpful! I kept seeing ads but wasn’t sure it was right for us. After seeing your review, I think we are going to give it a try. Thank you so much for doing this in depth review!
Hi, thank you for the wonderful review. You mentioned using this as a supplement. Would you recommend it as a primary full curriculum? Also would it appeal to preteens. Looking for my 12 year old son so was looking for programs that are not too "babyish" for lack of better word, like I hear with Time4Learning. I also heard some complain about the material being too easy but I figured if you can pull lessons from different levels that can be controlled. What are your thoughts on that?
I am not sure how this would compare to Time4Learning as far as "babyish" goes. My guess would be that it would be similar. I also think that most online learning programs are not best used as a full curriculum, just because they do tend to be on the lighter side. It seem like you can only get a curriculum that is overwhelming (like a actual public school at home situation), or a bit too light unless you supplement a bit. I would say that this could be a good "base", but I do think that parents need to take an active role to supplement this and use the PDFs that are supplied to create a better rounded curriculum. But, yes, you can control the levels, so that is good. But I'm not sure if he will like the videos. They are simple and I don't think they are babyish, but it's hard to know what a preteen will think. You can always try it out for a month at $1.99, I believe.
Thank you for sharing this review. I do plan on using MiAcademy this coming year for 4th grade. This will be our 3rd year homeschooling. I’m trying to decide what other curriculum to use along side this program. Do you have any recommendations?
As we use this just as a fun extra component, we have a FULL curriculum setup on the side. I’m not sure which subjects you are wanting to add, but here are my curriculum picks for our family subjects. My youngest is going into 4th: FAMILY SUBJECTS | Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2022-2023 | Family Subjects Curriculum Reveal Collab ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OB4KmxhqQdI.html
I'm curious to know why they raised their monthly charge to $36 per child. I am still considering this for my two kids but I hope that the prices don't keep going up. This video was VERY helpful to me as a 1st timer, I am looking to start this journey in the upcoming school year.
I don’t know why they rose their prices… that’s quite I hike :( Do they still have the $1.99 trail month? I would definitely do that before commuting to anything long term. If you use it for about 6 months and is something you really think is going to work for your family, I would consider getting the lifetime (big investment, but if you use it for many years, it would be worth it). But only after a very good trial with it. I do personally have a friend who has used this program for 3+ years and so loves it.
We do french but we don’t use this curriculum!!! We try to use bookwork but do use them digitally using pdfs, yet we use easy peasy. I don’t assign lessons. We don’t grade!!! I feel educational game teaches my kids better sometimes!!!
its my first day with miacademy! so far so good and SOOOOO FUNNN, i havent done any lessons because it is the weekend but i am excited to see how this goes. thank you for your review :D
thank you this was a lot of help. i have been using books ( LifPac which i like very much) but she is going into 3rd grade and i feel i need more help this looks perfect for her. thank you
We enjoyed it for the time we did it. Definitely try out the first month and make a decision from there. Not every family or child does best with an online program.
I can't answer that 100%. I'm not sure. I can't find any info on that. I would suggest that you place your child either at the grade that you feel like they would be in in each subject OR even at a lower level. That way, they can have some early successes and they can always do 2 lessons a day per subject if it's easy and they need to review. I just placed my children where I thought they were for each subject and that worked fine. If it's too hard or too easy, you have access to the whole curriculum, so you can easily switch it up!
I have been considering homeschooling for a while. I had a lot of concerns one being how I will work full-time. well, I was blessed with a full-time job now that is working hybrid and very flexible. Then a new concern arose which was will I really have the time to put quality lesson plans together and I really was not sure if I would have the time to teach on top of that...well this video has made my decision less stressful. I definitely will sign up for Miacademy..and the plus is it has Chinese, which I have wanted me and my child to learn. This is heaven-sent for a beginner homeschool mom!! Thank you!
That totally depends on the school you are going to. In general, if it’s elementary or middle school, your child will be placed back in school according to their age. However, once you hit high school, most schools will not just let a child in from homeschooling. Generally at 9th grade you need to choose homeschooling or other because you might be stuck with it. This is true about all “homeschooling” courses. Miacademy is a homeschooling curriculum, not a school.
I feel like if you did this as your primary curriculum, it would probably take between 15-30 per subject that you assign (there are 4 main subjects and 4 more optional categories of subjects). This is if you just do the computer portions. If you do the PDFs too, I would say allot 30-45 mins per subjects (possibly more). It's really up to you. As the parent, you assign what you want your child to do.
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool thank you so much for all of that information I just get so caught up in making sure that all the work is done that needs to be done by the end of the year so that they are able to pass their yearly tests.. and I worry that if not, I’m not assigning enough for that if he’s not doing enough, we won’t hit 180 days
@@Gardendaze5 so, I don’t know what state you are in, but in most states you don’t have to “pass” any state tests. Generally, if you have to test, your child has to show improvement over time. For example, I have 4 kids, 3 of whom have special needs. They don’t have to test at grade level. They have to be improving year over year… whatever that is s may be.
Of course I cannot say 100%, but I do think the people who stated this are Christian. I would say that the curriculum is neutral in regards to everything except the Bible classes, but I think it’s fairly safe from woke things. Definitely check around some more, but I don’t think it’s a problem with them.
i really appreciate your review of this... i have been wanting to homeschool by son by using this program. he is autistic, 8 yrs old and having a horrible time at school. now i just need to get over my fear of the unknown, about the parent qualifying class.
Personally, we prefer physical books, but overall, they enjoyed this curriculum for the time that we did it. Definitely try out the one-month trial to see how it goes for you.
Hi, your video was very helpful. Although, I do have one question on the section of interaction with other kids. Can they still use the “My World” without chatting with others?
No, I don't. I love curriculum too much to stick to one curriculum for all my main things. We use this only as a supplement because we like a literature based approach in our home. But, my kids do this to learn a few subjects that they are interested in learning more about.
This is not a school, so you don’t enroll your daughter. You need to do wherever your state requires to be officially homeschooling. Then you can purchase the subscription and pick out the classes you want your daughter be in. If you are new to homeschooling, I have a playlist that will walk you through the initial steps: How to Start Homeschooling ru-vid.com/group/PL_NRIaUvZ-J1cwzvyOx_QX7u2gZzPeahr
No, it is only accredited in that is has been approved for supplemental learning. This is not a school, but, rather a curriculum that you can use with your family to homeschool. So, you will not get a diploma from them. As a homeschooler, you will issue your own diploma in accordance with your state's law.
We use it as a supplement about 2 times a week. No one complains about doing it. I like what they are learning. It is definitely not our style for full time curriculum, but it’s fun as an aside. In the summer, kids would ask to do it. Now they just do it as scheduled. I think, if you want an online program, it’s worth checking out. But we still prefer physical books.
Nope… we did it for almost a year, but we were having some problems with kids’ inappropriate use of computers (getting viruses because of random clicking, etc). So I went completely off line. We really prefer a physical books curriculum anyways. It was fun as simmering on the side, but never for our own main curriculum (for our family anyways).
I hated miacademy it was so boring and it was such a waste of my time I started it last October 2021 and stopped December 2021 and never worked on it ever since plus I was homeschooled last year now I'm back at school which I'm glad to The reason why I was homeschooled last year It's because I didn't like the teacher there
Definitely depends on the student. I know it would not work as a primary curriculum for my kids. They don’t mind doing it 1-2 times a week, but we have lots of curriculum that works better for us. I do have a friend whose son has done Miacademy for 2 years and it’s working for them. Everyone is so different and thankfully, we have so many different options to choose from as homeschoolers! Thanks for sharing and letting people know that it doesn’t work for everyone! ❤️
I feel like Miacademy is very manageable. I would say 1-2 hours a day for the core subjects (depending on the child’s grade). Of course, you as a parent decides what and how much to assign.
It's really great that you can try it out for 1 month. I think that will give you a good indication on how this will work for you. Thanks for watching!
Hello I have a question I am new to homeschooling my children I started one last year and now am doing all three this year. They are all different grades and I’m using Acellus Academy right now. If I wanted to use Miacademy for my middle schoolers as a primary would this prepare them for Acellus for high school? I know Acellus will give them a high school diploma which is what I want so they can go to college
I don’t know for certain as I don’t know exactly what Miacademy teaches at all levels or used Acellus before, but based on what I have heard of both… I think it would work. If you want to do exactly the same thing as Acellus but cheaper… Power Homeschool is Exactly the same curriculum was Acellus without the accreditation (this o am fairly certain of). So if you are looking to save a bit of money, switch to that until high school.
@@CalmintheChaosHomeschool This is very true, thank you I was leaning more to Miacademy because it looks more cartoony for my youngest she would definitely love that
Can you go in ahead of time and print out all of the pdfs for the course? Like in the parent account or student account? Or can you only print the pdfs as the child gets to the actual information? Thanks
