At this point, the conversation of race and South Beach has gotten old. Year after year, we hear one side of the aisle argue that the need to do something about the rowdy crowds on South Beach, during Spring Break is about skin color while the other side argues that it's about safety. While I don't argue that race may be a factor in some peoples disdain for the South Beach Spring Break Crowd, we can not negate that at this point, safety has become an issue. Since the beginning of Spring Break, there have already been 5 shootings on South Beach. When the vast majority of the crowd is Black, what conclusion is left for one to draw. Black people, we have a problem! Let's discuss...

I lived in the heart of South Beach at 10th & Collins for years and would be angry hearing the locals talk about the “Urban” events on the beach and how awful they are. I used to think they were just being racist to my face but I quickly found out they weren’t lying. Tourists being carjacked, locals being beat up and mugged, fighting in the streets, trashing restaurants, bullets flying, innocent people getting shot ect. The city literally becomes a war zone for those weeks. Nobody wants them there, not the locals, the tourists, the police, nobody! We can’t give them a reason to not want us around then cry racism. As black people we all pay the price for our youth acting like monsters.

Same. I was not born and bred there, but South Beach was the place I worked and called home for many years. It used to be a quiet beach-bum place by day, and only had specific areas where you could go clubbing or bar-hopping- but the most scandalous thing that would go on would be of the romance variety. I saw how it started to change by Y2K and hightailed it out of there. Even back then when spring breakers were starting to arrive I felt like it didn't fit the easygoing-lay-on-the-beach vibe that I loved.

Honestly, with age, I'm starting to see how we as black people really can be our own worst enemy. When you intentionally go somewhere and act like a fool and are disruptive, disrespectful to the law/rules, loud and ghetto as hell, then you shouldn't be surprised when people say "hey, this only proves our point about black people. And we don't want them here ". There's no reason to act out. Sure have fun, but know the difference between fun and showing your behind.

You becoming older and bitter, from my pov. Who the fuk is We? How tf do u see a specific group of Black folks acting a fool, and equate them to "all Black people"? U seem dense. If all u see are unruly black folks, when u go out, then that tells me you're broke asf and can only hang around certain areas/certain black folks. I've been many places, and I've seen unruly people from all cultures (here in America). Especially once liquor and egos are involved. When I see something I don't like, I move along. Imho. Either you're not Black (online trolling), or youre a black immigrant. Or, you're black american, but just a 🦝. This perpetuates the stereotype of us in the diaspora! When did violence become a party? Bringing guns and then recording it on social media, is a sure way to get caught, good! Keep self snitching! I’m embarrassed for the Black community. Why can’t people act right when going places? That’s disgusting behavior. This type of behavior makes it harder on us as a collective when we do go to these places just to enjoy vs to causes dysfunction. I feel I’m wasting my time even typing this. The racial tension that’s been going on for centuries and even still today in this country, we’re not in the position to go to cities and terrorize just for fun because we’re risking our safety and freedom (serving prison time and unfair judicial system), and it’s just not right. Idk how this problem can be fixed. The only way is to shut it down with a long term plan to get in place.

Thank u dineva for bringing this up , where I part ways with u is that this is the problem on a macro level, black culture on a whole has become about disrespect and lawlessness, with an inherent entitlement to do whatever we want because of past injustices, and any criticism is met with name calling and desertion. Until we address this we will be at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder, and no amount of ketanjis on the supreme court can correct this.

You’re so right about rebranding Spring Break on South Beach. The ppl who are coming to SB with the fighting and shooting are probably not even in college to even celebrate Spring Break. I’m a native of Barbados, a naturalized citizen of the US and an avid traveler. What I’ve come to recognize, is the blatant disregard many black Americans have when visiting foreign countries. They come across entitled, boisterous, and they demand the most while tipping the least. Stamps on a passport is mot aligned with wealth or knowledge, it just means you came up on a payment plan. We are a global community and the decency you require in your own home should be reciprocal. Learn and be respectful of a culture before visiting, rather than expecting that they placate to that of North America. This behavior on South Beach is disrespectful. Visit an area, appreciate the culture and lifestyle…don’t disrupt it. Eventually, you will not be welcomed.

We - as a community - have to heal to rise above this, because the clear folk who benefit from that image being perpetuated sure as hell aren't going to stop. I'm from near Ocean City, Md and kids get run over, fall from balconies, public drunkness, fights, murder, etc. That was happening when I was child, and still does. I believe one of the differences is the states gun laws. Florida is gun culture. I don't see the gun issue going away. But Essence Fest, is a perfect example of what Miami could do. I just know that Spring Breakers are gonna Spring break, no matter the city.

Trust, Miami Beach isnt intentionally setting up any Black Spring Break Friendly entertainment anytime soon. Their tactic was to try to dilute the urban crowds by staging an Alanis Morsette and Latin Artist concert. The whole goal there was to bring white and latin patrons to the beach. I dont think having a Mature Black catered concert during that time would have helped either. The Spring Breakers would still find other spots on the beach to congregate. Since the police data os showing that most of the arrests were locals, I have to wonder if they were even college kids or hood folks that came put to prey and party.

Younger generations don’t know how to have quality “good” fun. The way Miami Beach was shut down for spring break is a big clue that it’s a wrap and I say good written. It will be a thing of the past shortly like Freaknik and 4th of July at Virginia Beach & Jones Beach. Ohhh the memories. Well you better hold on to them cause that’s all you gonna have 😆. I’ll stick with the wine sipping crowd at Essence Fest and Capital Jazz Fest. 🍷

Very Simple Fix. Add more reasonably priced concerts or festivals that attack the young crowd but bring acts that will elicit a particular vibe. For example: Adele, Taylor swift, Normani, Francko, Arianna Grande, SZA, Bruno Mars, Jhené Aiko and Summer Walker. All the young people will go and be in a high security control place for 3-5hrs. After the show most will go home and not want to turn up at a club. Or have the big name comedian come to town. Give these young ppl options with things to do and places to go. If they have events to attend, then they will more to do with their time than to go to the beach and drink all afternoon.

I appreciate your perspective on this topic, Q. I've been an educator since 2005 and have taught and worked with students of all classes, races, and backgrounds since then, carefully observing their social patterns and trends over time. Things have certainly shifted; it's a complex issue with many layers and nuances. I see it largely as a generational issue: people under, let's say 23, have been raised by the first generation of people to live with 24/7 access to the internet and media. They might have younger parents; if they even had active parents at all. They were 'raised' by television and violent/overtly sexual imagery within a self-serving, "look at me" type of culture where everything that happens in one's life is to be considered only as entertainment, for selfish consumption and personal validation. As a result, I see a major disconnect between their (carefully crafted) realities and the reality of what truly IS; a blanket of apathy, if you will, a total desensitization. I'm not saying that young people shouldn't turn up; nor that s**t wasn't hot in the 90's and early 2000's (when I was Spring Break aged and had to duck a few Brooklyn bashment shootouts myself). The difference was the intention: more often than not, 20 years ago my people wanted to party, dance, and have a good time- whereas the intention now is to be photographed/digitally validated, do something "for the gram," or "to get on tiktok" and be perceived a certain way to attract 'followers'. The emphasis is no longer on fun- it's on clout. Young people literally DO NOT KNOW how to have fun anymore without a phone (or stupidity) being attached to it. This, compounded with the fact that family values and morality are things of the past, and well.... you get the idea.

I definitely feel you when you say they don't care for or want black people there. My first and only time visiting Miami was about 8 years ago. My brother was on leave in the military and we came to visit and drove down to see what all the fuss was about . Our first night there we went to a really nice restaurant and when I went to pay my bill I paid with my credit card but I wanted to leave a cash tip so i put a zero in the tip area . The waiter who was not African American quickly told me " the gratuity is not included in the bill amount". I changed that tip from a $20 to a $5 right in his face. It came off very " bitch what is yo broke ass doing here ?"

The stereotype that black people don’t tip is very true and justified. I worked as a bartender in college and absolutely hated working during classic weekend or any predominately black night because people wouldn’t tip or would skip out on the bill. And there was ALWAYS a shooting. We would fight to not work on those nights.

Very insightful. The real issue with urban week/speing break is the same problem we have in our communities. You have too many kids who were raised wrong that are now grown up, and having kids that they too are raising wrong. If you wanna fix "the culture" start with the youth within your reach. Be a mentor, be an example. We as a people, those of us with sound mind, and who can offer a proper influence, need to connect with the youth at a very early age and possibly be that voice of decency that they might not be getting at home. Be a mentor, a tutor, something. We also need to change what we FEED our babies.... yes food, but also MEDIA.... if your kid sits up and has kodak black, chief keif, city girls blastin in his ear for hours on end, how the fk u think they gon act?? That shyt is literally PROGRAMMING and rewiring the consciousness of, not just our kids, but society in general!. Life imitates art.... housewives, love and hiphop, anything on the zeus network, fortnite.... its influence and programming. And while as adults, we can hopefully discern entertainment for what it is, to a young developing mind, its programming. Folks wanna defund the police? We need to defund the glorification of the worst elements of our society... and that transcends race.

I think it would be better if we made parents more accountable while they’re still young. If a child gets suspended from school then the parent should have to volunteer at the school at a school facility because most parents could care less if their kid is punished at school.

I think that is an awesome idea!! If these vacation spots are really looking for a certain demographic, like they say they are, bring in the older musicians like, F.B and Maze, Isley Bros. And some 90's R&B acts. And you're right, Essence Fest has never really had any issues. We come in to NOLA, we dance, eat good, have a good time and go home. So something can definitely be done, as far as activities and getting a specific crowd in there. But then, that leaves me to wonder about the younger crowds that do not like to intermingle with the older crowd. Where will they go next to party? What city will they destroy next? This has to be a multiple city/ nation wide planning thing. As a mother of young adults and teenagers, I agree, the young culture is obsessed with drinking, drug and gun culture (Even if they don't partake in those activities) We definitely have to find some things that they can do and still enjoy themselves enjoy themselves. Because no matter what, you can't plan for the rachedness. And as much as we teach them right from wrong at home, when they go out into those streets, they can be totally different people.

You made some valid points in this video. I'm also 40 and once was a college student. We talked for spring break, had a good time, and returned to campus safely. Nowadays, these young people don't have any good role models, feel that they are above the law, and think everything is a joke. We, as black people, got to stop saying they are trying to treat our kids differently when our kids are the ones making a mockery of themselves. At this point, I don't think there's anything that the city can do to appease everyone.

As Neely Fuller has stated so many times in the past, these groups of people do not like themselves enough to be in the company of others. These men because these are men shooting these guns are going out with the intent of starting trouble and killing. Common sense is not so common because no one would have to tell me not to go down to Miami if these types of issues of violence continue to occur. We all are watching the same reports daily and instead of taking the stance of not going to Miami or anywhere reporting shootings and attacks, people are packing up their bags going anyway. That tells me that the people would rather take a chance at being killed or hurt instead of staying their behinds at home. Like the old people use to say, a hard head makes a soft ass. Today that can be a dead ass!

There’s a significant lack of conflict resolution and avoidance in the younger generations. They immediately escalate to the most extreme violence because that’s what they’re accustomed to - hell they’ve had to go to schools learning how to survive a live shooter! and…. I’m on a skinny branch. BUT I’d also attribute a lot of this behavior to the need of “appearances” for the gram. Social media is a blessing and a curse. The blessing is connecting with people you may never have crossed paths with normally and a curse because it creates an unfair - unrealistic expectation based on smoke & mirrors.
