The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is dredging major ports on America's East Coast to help accommodate larger ships that will be passing through the improved Panama Canal. But in Miami, experts say the dredging is piling sediment on top of living coral in the port waters, essentially killing some of Earth's most endangered corals. The corps has relocated many corals in the affected areas, but many conservationists think it's not enough.

Watch: Florida coral reefs that were once a vivid rainbow-already under siege from acidification and climate change-have turned a barren gray, choked by sediment from a dredging operation.

It's all about greed! It's sad to reflect on the idea that my children's children will certainly know a very different world. We have the choice to make the difference, but corporate and personal greed continue to stand in the way of doing what it morally right.

If I'm not mistaken coral helps protect beaches so hopefully we can find a way to protect the coral.

These corals have survived for so long but of course their demise is inevitable. This is why the people who are participating in Mars One don't seem so crazy.
