The JZ Amethyst has appeared in countless of Justin Colletti's videos in the SonicScoop channel. Should it be replaced by its very close cousin, the JZ Vintage 67?
A lot of viewers ask about how these two mics compare. It's time to find out! Although their capsule comes from the same design, slight differences in the electronics and headbasket may lead to real differences.
Tell us what your favorite is!
All clips recorded level matched with no EQ, and light compression/limiting.

Or I need Vintage 67.By the way I do plan to buy your Mastering course soon.

I love the open sound of the V67, especially on the drums demo. Justin, your voice definitely sounds more sibilant on the V67, and there is more audible mouth noise. The Amethyst seems to eliminate that. I just ordered an Amethyst in their Christmas sale. Can't wait to hear it.

Bought the V67 when they were on sale this summer. My go to vocal mic now on most of my projects now. Love the sound I get from it and definitely worth the money.

I had the Amethyst for years, I love how it sounds on vocals. In my opinion, I think the Amethyst sounds better. I think it has a more "controlled" top end than the V67, (some people might think it's slightly darker) but if you run them thru a series of plugins, I'm guessing the "sparkle" of the V67 would easily turn into a slight harshness, but I never owned a V67, so I'm merely just guessing by hearing the source. Anyway, I think it's a very good comparison, if I could only have one, I would prefer the Amethyst.😄

Vintage 67 a little more open but also warmer in the lows...I'd swap!

DUDE!!! I've been waiting to hear the Vintage 67 compared to the Amethyst! I'd also be interested in hearing how the Vintage 47 compares too if y'all could ever get your hands on it! You made my day Justin!!!

They both sound awesome! The Vintage 67 & 47 are on my acquisition wishlist when they come on sale. Plus, the BB29 is looking really interesting too.

V67 has a more “driven” color to me. Has a rather “radio” sound already. Would put it in front of Adele or Ariana Grande or The Weeknd. But the Amethyst I’d put in front of rap or some R&B vocals - Jay Z, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott. Amethyst sounds cleaner and classy in a way. V67 sounds a touch more harmonic, feels more focused in the high mids. Perhaps the polar response is tighter too. Thanks for the comparison. Currently in the market for a mic!

Great comparison👍 They updated the frequency plot of the Amethyst that now explains the sound difference.

I really enjoy your presentations. You are clear and direct, and you have humility. You are really great. In my humble opinion, I liked your Voice more on the Amethyst. It has more chestiness and warmth. But both mics sound excellent. On guitar it was a toss up for me. The 67 sounded more "Modern" (Clear with a slightly more pronounced "Upper Mid Presence"). The Amethyst had a nice "Vintage Fullness". On Drums I definitely preferred the Amethyst. A Richer sound with more Low End. I loved it's Tone on the cymbals. I switched the sides from Left to Right and Vice Versa when you played both mics on the drums, and switched them back again - just in case my ears were tricking me. In both cases the Amethyst sounded better to me - although the V67 is a great choice. Both mics sounded outstanding.

It seemed to me that the Amethyst had a clearer fuller sound on dialogue whilst the V67 had a ‘crispier’ sound, a bit thinner but the vintage edge is a classic sound sometimes preferable to cut through a mix. On guitar that vintage sound seemed better to my ears but on the drums it seemed too crispy-thin, but then when both mics were left and right on the drums it was like bingo! That’s the sound. I would try both on guitar too.

I'm not sure which one is better for podcasts - the vintage '67 is bulkier looking, and I prefer the compact profile of the amethyst - however, when listening to the drum comparison, I was more drawn by the vintage '67. I can't really tell you exactly why though. Wish I had both!!!

I liked the 67 better in overall sound, I like that more reassuring "studio sound" It has a metalic kinda colour in a good way, like some harmonics in the right places to sit in a nice place. Only thing is it would need some de essing especially when talked to further away.

On your voice I tend to prefer the Amethyst. Somehow the V67 seems to highlight the high frequencies a tad to much for my personal taste. But as you say it is subtle. And it could be an advantage for the V67 when doing guitar recordings. Now, I’d love a comparison between the Amethyst and the new Warm Audio WA87R2. And why not also with their new WA67? Cheers!

Cool compare -- they sound very similar to my ears and agree that the 67 has more clarity/snap in the top and a clearer lowend. The Amethyst is,..um....silkier? With a slightly bigger bottom end.

I was just thinking the 67 is a little brighter, maybe a bit more high mids? And then the caption pops up lol Preferred the 67 on the guitar over the Ameythest and the same on drums, the guitar seemed to have more of a natural sound to it's tone and the drums the same, the snare was much more crisp and snappy through the 67. 67 is the winner for me
@MarkSturman
@MarkSturman 3 года назад
My opinion, for vocals, brighter is not always better. I do love the 67, a lot, but the Amethyst still maintains a lower end range that I typically prefer, and is one of the smoothest mics there is. The 67 might have a better use as overheads, or room mics. If I switched to the 67, I'd find myself tweaking the highs down to sound more like the Amethyst, which itself would be a pretty cool comparison. Each have their uses, and every situation is always different. Get both! (just start with the Amethyst)

Both sound great though the V67 does emphasize sibilance more than the Amethyst.
@chibisven

On spoken word the 67 definitely had the harsh "S" sounds that pushed into a harsh distortion and drove me a little batty, but that pronounced (what I call) high-high-mids sounded incredible on the drums. The acoustic guitar I'm honestly feeling like I heard more mic position than mic difference, but I did like the natural scoop that happened on the 67. I'd really like to hear how these mics compare to something more "industry standard" like a Neumann U87.

Likely a sweet mic. Very good drum demo ... BUT ... in this competitive market - this acoustic grr (very important) and male vocal (very important) need to be done professionally. Get a guitar player to come in and do it right, spend your time on mic placement. Same on Male vocal. Bring in a couple of MALE vocalist to sing in two or three styles that shows off low, mid and high sonic responses. And let us know the "chain" what preamp and recording format etc .... Assuming its a professional quality mic in all ways (and I'm sure it is) ... bring the mic demo up to the level of the mic itself. All due respect intended. I've done a LOT of recording. We need to know these things.

which one of the JZmics is the most mid forward?
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop 9 месяцев назад
Of the LDCs? Probably the 47, followed by the V11 (lots of mids, but SMOOTH mids), followed by the amethyst and 67. THE most mid forward one might be their new SDC though, the BT-202. -Justin

@SonicScoop ooo those look so cool.. you think the BT 202 would be good for Vocals, I know they're instrument, but the description of dark and smooth, mid forward sounds perfect for VO.

For certain, more top end presence on the 67. This makes choosing harder, because I really like the smooth high freq roll off on the Amethyst on your voice over stuff. It’s perfectly clear, but smooth. With the 67 I started to listen to your mouth noises more while speaking haha. But.. you can always take freqs away with an EQ, you can’t really add them back in. Both wonderful sounding with the same innate character, but the difference isn’t subtle to my ears. I could pick each out in a blind AB consistently. Now what!? I def want one :)

To my ears: Amethyst = better on transient material / V67 better on vocals and other “vowel/tonal” material.

a "cleaner slightly more modern version of a U67" is a U87. We can hear the RECORDS made with those near new U67s... they sound the way they sound, and did when brand new. Sorry but this whole idea that mics, or guitars for that matter, sound different BECAUSE they're older is simply spin.
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop 3 года назад
Interesting. You don't think that electronic components can physically change with age? Also: U87s and U67 sound pretty different. (Although some versions of the U87 do have the same capsule as the U67). Heck, even two vintage U67s will often sound fairly different from one another....
@weedywet
@weedywet 3 года назад
@@SonicScoop I think that age has its effects, but i think that using aging as a concept to explain why new "inspired by" gear sounds different form the original classics is at best overstated, and more accurately dissembling. I've done comparisons with 5 U47s next to each other and while, yes, they're not "identical" they share a distinct character family resemblance that none of the NEW mics we were comparing had. It's not age that makes the real difference, much as new manufacturers would like you to think so. The best new mics stand on their own without resorting to calling themselves 'versions' of classics.
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop 3 года назад
@@weedywet Sure, I think that there are absolutely other factors aside from age that have an effect-and probably a more significant one in many cases. I just wouldn't rule it out being a factor at all. Thanks for weighing in!

@@weedywet Hi Weedywet ! First of all, sorry for my broken english. You seem to me to know the subject well. What will be in what JZ offers the one who would approach a former U67? Did you listen to the V47 tests? What do you think of amethyst? You are also talking about new top microphones, what model and brand are you talking about? Thank you, your comment and your experience will help me make my choice.
@busyboxst7
@busyboxst7 2 года назад
@@relaxmax6808 there is no modern mic that "sounds like a U67" that I've heard yet if you mean the full effect of it. The closest is probably the Neumann reissue - not cheap. I had a U67 for many years (Neumann, vintage). Part of the sound is tube compression and the way it picks up a room. Various mics get close to it in terms of frequency response, but there's a part of the sound that isn't the same as the original in terms of the squeeze (even grit) and how it hears room bleed as the volume of the source switches back and forth between quiet and loud parts.
