Born into poverty in London, when he first decided to become an actor, he was looked upon with amazement: who did he think he was? But he persevered, starting in repertory theater, then tv, and finally succeeding in becoming one of filmdom’s most versatile stars.
Today, despite those successes, Michael Caine retains a keen memory of his origins. He has refused to abandon the Cockney accent that reflects his roots, or the authentic spirit that bends a knee to no one.
Also included are the recollections of friends, co-workers and family members such as actors Julie Walters, Bob Hoskins, Dyan Cannon, Angie Dickinson, Ben Kingsley, Roger Moore, directors Lewis Gilbert and Sidney J. Furie, and Michael Caine’s wife, Shakira.

I am now on old lady but when I was a teen and very fragile due to family abuse i went to a party in Kensington..i seem to remember.Michael, then an unknown actor, invited me to dance. I had been crying and I must have looked a wreck. Michael was so sweet and gentle. I felt safe as we shuttled around. He would never remember me..but I remember him. Michael is a kind and gifted man who deserves all the good in his Life.he saved me that day. And if only for a few minutes It seemed he understood my suffering.

Inspirational, I also grew up in the East end of London. We had a two up and two down. No bathroom and an outside toilet. During the winter ice was on the inside of the windows. We was a poor family but rich in love (as that's all we had). Pet's also. Holidays far and few between. I'm only 60 years old now and many a memory haunts me. Happy but hard times which we took for granted. Even today I can go without most things I've never had (I don't have a TV, car or passport). I actually played in bomb crater's and blown out buildings. I wouldn't change a thing. I'm 60 and working harder than 30 years ago. I'm not slowing down and stopping soon. I guess it's from my generation. We won't sit on our mobile phones all day. We have the stamina to keep going for a working day. I look at people on the train and think " look at him, he ain't got a day's work in him". God knows how or ex service people must feel. Michael Caine is an inspiration and a typical honest hard working Londoner like the rest of us who grew up there. I've never been intimidated by posh people looking down their nose at us. Thank you Sir Michael. And God bless our heritage. London.

Having just seen this I thought I'd take a short stroll down memory lane and re-watch The Ipcress File. Shouldn't be a problem for someone who lives in Toronto, home of Canada's largest public library system, which features fast, efficient inter-library loan service between its one hundred branches. Sure enough, the library catalogue shows eight Ipcress File DVDs available for borrowing; but to my astonishment there are currently 39 'holds' (each representing a library patron waiting his/her turn to see the movie) on these eight DVDs--more than a little unusual for a film made in 1965. Evidently, people just can't get enough of Michael Caine!

This actor took a long time creating an impact as far as craft goes. He could easily have been dismissed. One you don't take all that seriously - he's just playing himself ... his gravity of worth is in the way he captures that beauty of the pricelessness of conveyance of nuance. His accent is is like a very deep well . You think it's 20' deep but as you're falling down you realise you're not going to hit the bottom therefore will be unable to turn and swim to the top ... The well spoken has well defined parameters. No roomrr to turn just sink further & further. Give me a MC movie/ play anytime. His ability to expand on character is limitless.

"My family was poor, but we were millionaires of love" ! What a wonderful thing to say of one's family, it shows how Michael Caine thought of his parents and home, how he basically is as a person and individual - one of the best English actors ever, a brilliant performer and man - my most favourite actors since "Zulu", which I watched as an eight year old in the cinema in Hereford.

I liked his honesty when asked why he did such a bad film as Jaws The Revenge, especially coming right off an Oscar win. He said he wanted to do an extension on his house, the films salary paid for it, and he got to spend 4 months in the Bahamas and Florida Keys in the winter months on the film producers dime. He never saw the film, he knew the critics said it was awful and he took their word for it.

Sir Michael Caine is a unique legend, an amazing inspiration of true talent. He is loyal, one of the most knowledgeable, unassuming, naturally funny people I have had the privilege to meet. But his great abilities don’t end with acting. He is like a walking encyclopaedia, his chef skills are Michelin star quality, he tends his gardens with care and serves up his own fresh vegetables, his towering sunflowers and beautiful English flora fauna and protected wildlife would be the pride of the Royal Chelsea Flower Show, to name but a few of his accomplishments. He has the most committed family values, almost unknown in his field, his pride and joy are his wife, Shakira his equally amazing most gracious, eternally beautiful and dedicated life partner and an artist in her own right, and his beautiful family. He must never sleep for i don’t know where, as one of the busiest actors in history, he could find the time to accomplish all he does, not a moment passes without expanding his skills and knowledge. Sir Michael is a king among men - yet remains unspoiled. Thank you for the endless joy you have and will continue to share with the world. If anyone from the Academy is out there - Sir Michael Caine’s ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Oscars is Years overdue - get your fingers out ! I write not just as fan to my hero, but with true and real admiration, affection and the utmost gratitude for the blessings I have shared. I am blessed to be a fellow Pisces as is Lady Shakira. Thank you for your service and endless gifts to the Universe, I pray that your legacy will instil confidence and inspiration to try to follow by your legendary example as you have hoped it will. I look forward to your next appearances and to your new chapter in your amazing life. May you and those you love continue to receive all of the most wonderful blessings for the long and healthy future, you so richly deserve.

when Michael started talking about his mom i remembered a time one of the times i was out with my dad in the village pub in dublin wicklow mountains, we were working there restoring an old stone thatched cottage , it was just four walls with a tree growing out of it and one room still had roof on it when we started it, but when we finished it, in winter when it snowed it looked like a chrismas card picture we had no electric, lights were parffin lamps and candles as picturesque as any oil painting of an old chrismas sceen you could see. anyway one night in the pub with the locals having a drink and and singsong two local men, brothers with a big farm asked for a lift home, i had an old renault but not much petrol nearest petrol station at that time of night was 20 miles away they lived in the next mountain valley about four or five miles away, we got a drinks takeout and as many of the locals that the car could fit set of along the mountain road free wheeling down hills and up as much as much as we could before the car would slow down to much, we made it to their home old two story farm house like us no electric to far off the beaten track. they stocked the fire and got the lights going it was a nice atmosphere we did'nt know them very well but they were friendly and welcoming we were still relatively new to the area, my dad and myself found ourselfs standing out the front in the dimily lit doorway talking and wondering would we have enough petrol to get back when one of the brothers, Frank brought out two mugs of what turned out to be Poteen they had their own poteen stil, my dad was'nt really a drinker of sprits and i was only about fifteen out of politness we tasted it and it was not bad, frank went back in for some reason and my dad goes to the car and starts pouring the poteen into fuel tank, come back to the door and the other brother Hugh comes out sees the empty mugs brings them in and and back out full again so couple more sips each and the rest in the tank fuel home sorted. we were all gathered at the doorway talking my dad started telling me about my grandmother she was a washer woman my granddad had died when my dad was a todler she had nine children to look after so when he was twelve left school to go and help her, then at fourteen he got an appentship with a cobbler then eighteen with a plumber and at twenty two got full wages , goes home with his wage packet says to my gran, mom youve looked after me all my life you've worked hard done without you've colthed us and fed us all these years well now iv'e got money you can do it for yourself from now on. we made it back home that night free wheeling and backfiring up the hills

Nobody ever mentions my favourite in top 10 lists with Michael Caine. Second Hand Lions!!!! Having no idea what this movie was, I joined it at the scene where a salesman comes driving up, and they shoot him up. Hilarious! And the great line: "…we know nothing about kids. If you need anything, get it yourself. Or better still, do without"

I've always been a fan of Michael Caine, I particularly enjoy Alfie (1966), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Italian Job (1969), Sleuth (1972), Zulu (1964) and Get Carter (1971). Rumor has it that he was offered the part of the killer in Hitchock's 1973 movie, Frenzy, but turned it down for fear of being typecast.

The '60's were really something. We think of the youth as the focus of that time but men and women in their 30's were able to break out of the mold and do something fresh.

30's IS young. You surely cannot believe that people are "old" for more than 50 years of their life! You'll find out. In time, lol.
