As a northerner, and from a unionist background, I have to say this man is a delight. I wish he had more of a role here, and some day the president is the president of ALL of Ireland.
I agree President Higgins is not the president of the Republic of Ireland. He’s the president of Ireland. He’s my president and I’m proud to call him my president
Not the sort of chat you'd expect between a president and a comedian is it 🤣 And thanks for your comment by the way, hopefully more folk from your background come around to that 'all inclusive' way of thinking.
I've just come back from Belfast and I'm on an absolute high! Not through drugs may I add, just down to the absolute joy that were the people of Belfast. I have now started reading up about all of the history of Ireland and Northern Ireland. As a Brit, I'm somewhat ashamed that I know so little. But our schools taught us nothing of this history.
Hes just like the countries grandad isnt he. Such a nice and gentle man , great president , even if the role in this country is mainly ceremonial. Very proud to say hes our president, very lovely man 👏
Loved this interview one of the participants being the president of Ireland, the interviewer being a very good friend of said President. Only disappointment the Bernese Mountain Dogs didn't get a mention.
@@Ksaxkradio I'm sure someone's "Auntie Mary, no the auntie Mary on the father's side, bumped into her old neighbour Barbara walking the dog down the pier, and dontcha know Barbara's daughter Laura married an English man and they both died, and Mary told her brother" to tell him all about that
You want to try living in New Zealand where we have an APPOINTED Governor General. In a recent poll only 18% of people could name the current GG. Most people can't even say if the current GG is a man or a woman. I don't get to vote for them so I couldn't give a shit what the GG says about anything. I'd give my eyeteeth for a President like this. I remember when Mary Robinson was President and the BBC was interviewing her and the chap snidely said that the President of Ireland had no power so what was the point. She said, as I recall, "A President can't have policies but a President can have values". You only have to look at Michael D to see the values that he promotes of caring and compassion. In today's world, that is bloody awesome.
Anyone else not agree that our president is just a novelty act and actually is useless. Look at the country and how its run?.. ah but sure aslong as we all have a good laugh.
The president’s position was designed with that in mind they’re not meant to hold power but instead act as a figure head for the country. It means our head of state isn’t changing nearly yearly when the government falls apart and can focus on building relations with other countries doing visits and attending functions, etc. That is their role they’re not there to run the country simply represent it. Might seem useless to many but it’s an important role for the countries representation.
