@@bobjones8321 I’m saying it’s hypocritical to make your employees have weird specific grooming standards because of your “tradition” and then ruining your iconic uniform by slapping a Nike patch on it. If you’re going to act like tradition means something to you maybe don’t sell it off for a few extra bucks. It was a pretty simple point, not sure what’s so hard to understand about it
@@lilxtra6211Not all traditions are weighted equally and that’s entirely up to the owners to decide, therefore your hypocrisy theory means nothing. Where is there a rule that if you discontinue one tradition, you must discontinue all traditions? And who are you to decide that all traditions should be discontinued if one tradition is discontinued?
I watched one of the playoff games with my 86 year old mother, she couldn't believe then men were wearing braids and homeless beards, and I agree with her
Yeah that’s exactly why they haven’t won since 2009. Nothing to do with the terrible decision making by the front office and everybody always getting hurt.
@Platerpus7 well I'm good. I have so many championships from the Yankees, I'm good. I've seen more championships than most fans will ever see in their lifetime. This helps my misery with the jets and knicks(sort of 😆).
Yankees reached out to Brain Wilson from the San Francisco Giants. He told the Yankees no because he wasn't shaving his beard. So there's ur one player Michael.
@@shernigzLOL his loss how? The Yankees sucked ass when they wanted to sign him. He would have probably ruined his career playing for that horrendous team in that little league stadium.
Wilson's career was already ruined at that point. If Wilson did indeed turn the Yankees down because of the facial hair rule, it was when Wilson was a FA and while he was recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. Wilson signed with the Dodgers and played only 2 more seasons, pitching just 62 total innings, with a 3.62 ERA and only 1 save. In other words...it was no big loss for the Yankees. @@johnd3233
BREAKING NEWS: The Yankees has reaffirmed its no hair rule by passing out Manscaped to every player. "Our goal is to instill a sense of order, discipline, and a winning culture that defines the Yankees," said Brian Cashman." "We believe there are few things that exemplify pride and discipline more than a pair of well-groomed balls."
People don’t listen to facts they sit on hold waiting to argue Michael slips commercials in then more arguing no beards or long hair not a bad idea George!
Andrew McCutchen spoke out about that rule, he was not able to keep his beard or braids when he was traded. I agree when they are a free agent but when you are traded and have no say, that is the issue.
I am a retired UPS driver. UPS has a shave policy. A Muslim driver sued UPS essentially saying having to shave was violating his religion. In 2019 UPS decided to allow their drivers to have facial hair. The N Y Yankees need to join the 21st century. I am almost positive they are losing free agents because of this ridiculous rule.
@@JoeAnania how the Yankees allow religious exceptions? It’s very simple, if a player is of a religion where having a beard or long hair is essential to the player’s religion, that player is allowed to keep that beard and hair, but all the players who aren’t part of a religion like that, still have to shave
@@JoeAnania no, half the team is not Islamic, Sikh, or Amish. The only mainstream religions that require beards are Islam, Sikhism, and the Amish, of which the Yankees have zero players on their team that are part of those religions, to the extent where they wouldn’t shave their beard. If a player who was strictly Islamic were to play for the Yankees, they’d allow him to have his beard as it’s cited in scripture that Islamic men must seek to follow the noble example of the prophet of Islam, the holy prophet had a beard and wore a turban. Very few religions require people to have facial hair and the ones that do, while already extremely rare in this country are exponentially more rare in American baseball, hence why we’ve never seen this example play out The specific text of the Yankees rule is literally “All Players, Coaches, and Male executives are forbidden to display any facial hair, other than mustaches (except for religious reasons), and scalp hair may not be grown below the collar”
I specifically remember in 2022 Michael Kay saying the Yankees needed Luis Castillo before and even after he got traded to the Mariners. Castillo didn't want to cut his hair off and the reds did him a solid by trading him to the Mariners. Both offers from the Mariners and Yankees were about the same value wise so That beard 100% costed the yankees a player and i know Michael Kay may even argue that the Yanks might've even won a game if they had Castillo during the Astros series.
@@chrisheffernan7540 Bro stop. The Yankees haven't even been to a WS since 2009. So I don't wanna hear it like you guys are a powerhouse. Soon Castillo will be a FA and can go where he pleases. Won't be to the bum ass fucking Yankees
as someone who was in the military, the reason why we don't get to have long hair and beards is because we have to maintain a tight seal when wearing MOPP gear. thats really the only reason. however you are allowed to grow a beard to certain length if you get a medical note because shaving everyday is bad for your skin. also if you are special forces you are allowed to grow a beard and hair.
@@Champ-ch5tp so Michael Kay using the military as an argument was lame. They don’t shave in the military out of professionalism. They shave because they need to fit a gas mask.
@wolfwilliams , hasn't that been a rule since the Yankees became the Yankees back in the 1900's. I know that times have changed, but wouldn't you see that as a team building chemistry thing in the clubhouse, like were one unit working as one, their is no I in team. I see a lot of players having the same haircut during games. So, would you call that team chemistry. Chemistry in a clubhouse is important. Wouldn't you say so.
If your team's 162-game chemistry relies on facial hair gimmicks, then you've already lost. ... And I'm all for player independence, labor independence, and view rules by bosses as forms of slavery.
@@williamdecicco4164its all about freedom, the right to choose. Isn’t that what America stands for? If the whole team decided to get the same haircut or same beard or shave it, if they had that choice then thats real chemistry. That rule its an unnecessary pressure that hurts THE TEAM
The real point of doing it in the military is for hygiene and non-individuality. I love that the Yankees have a no facial hair rule. It sets them apart from the rest of the players. Thank you Michael!
I'm a clean cut guy , shave everyday , unfortunately bald lol, hair isn't an issue , but this rule is the stupidest god dam rule ever , it's time to go
I am a 72 year-old lifelong Yankees fan with a beard headed towards my navel. The Yankees are undoubtedly the best-looking cleanest cut sports team in any league. Today there are a lot of athletes that almost look homeless. It is refreshing to know there is still a team that takes pride in the appearance of their players. After all the players are still employees and management does have the right to make a few rules.
Yeah but when it hurts your actual team because players won't sign there due to Taxes and the Hair and Beard rule you aren't doing right for your business. This team is a joke and "Clean cut" doesn't mean anything besides maybe an Inferior product on the field. Time to Grow up and progress with the world.
@robbie5138 good grief grow up, never have they lost a player because of that😅🤣😂😂 u must be 5 yrs old thinking these clowns on other teams looking like dirty nasty homeless ppl unable to bathe look ok.its a joke 😅🤣🤣😂😂
I hate that defense about “discipline” if like the other 29 teams don’t have great players with plenty of discipline and have long hair/facial hair…over here worried about shaving rather than getting them practices and developing there’s where the discipline should be no in a razor 🪒 and I can name 3 players Manny Ramirez, Brian Wilson and David price all said 🖕partly because of that
Im not a Yankees fan and I have a beard myself but honestly I like this no beard rule. Carry yourself with class, you're representing the organization a historic one at that(hurts praising the Yankess as a Red Sox fan btw) so shaving everyday shouldn't be an issue. Also George made this decision, respect and honor his decision to this day
They shaved without a complaint Michael because there is nothing in their contracts or collective bargaining agreement to where they can fight it! Unless somebody was waiting to go to court to fight the Yankees & MLB over this of course they will comply because they all need to get PAID! Yes, there are standards with companies, but Kay getting so emotional over this IS defending the Yankees whether he admits it or not! If it wasn't personal than why get so worked up Kay? Kay is part of the problem with baseball! Old school. No names on the jersey. No beards. Don't Asterix the records, just have confusion over steroids but MLB didn't turn the revenue back to the fans they made off of Bonds, Sosa, Mcgwire. I love the baseball & my Yankees, but Kay is out of touch here, some of the rules are out of date and need to be changed. That's life!
People bring up a few Yankee traditions that need to go. The facial hair policy, no names on the back of the jerseys and no alternative uniform from the traditional home pinstripes and road greys. It's 2023. The Yankees are leaving a ton of money on the table with all three policies.
@@JohnM-sw4sc if you wanna ban extreme hair grow like marsh, (which i wouldn't do) i get it...but the Yankees aren't banning that they're banning every single beard even the low ones even a little tiny beard is banned
All it would take is a single player suing the team for the rule to vanish, the beard rule policy is actually a direct violation of NY state law. Kay is wrong about never losing a player over the hair policy, all the players against it simply choose not to sign with the yankees. This Yankees team isn't the Ruth team or the 50's teams, this team is simply another team in baseball.
@@eddya.3776 Yes there is its under the human rights act of the state that forbids any employer from discriminating against head and facial hair for any reason. It would only take a single person affected by the Yankees rule to file a state lawsuit to make the Yankees be forced to remove it. To say the players cannot sue is ridiculous you can sue for pretty much anything in the USA, especially for something the law of a state expressly forbids.
They could sue, but anyone can sue anybody for anything. The fact remains, this is an employment at will, and the players signed a contract knowing what the rules are when they joined the Yankees. Good luck with that lawsuit.
Check out who controls and monitors the hair rule, Jennifer Steinbrenner and she spends thousands every year on her hair , nails and what have you to look as she feels. To me that's BS and I've been watching the Yankees since 61!
This is right and wrong at the same time. They didn’t put names on home jerseys because the teams back then assumed their fans would know the jersey numbers. That’s why you saw names on away jerseys way more back in the day.
Bob Knight Rest In Power was cut from the same cloth if I’m not mistaken. Michael is right though name one player lol 😂. A Bronx homer yes MIKE talk your ISH. BTW love all 3 of y’all.
“Why do I have to defend this?!” Who the hell asked you to? He keeps saying he’s not defending it while defending it. The point he keeps making is so dumb. It’s not hurting anything. Who cares? Their rights as individuals matter.
If Mr. Steinbrenner were alive today, he most CERTAINLY would implement the hair/beard policy. I am Airborne, and I believe that structure, tradition, discipline, and respect are missing today, especially in sports. You want to work for the Yankees and enjoy the perks that come with it, then you adhere to the principles. Don says it's a different world, and it is, but that is EXACTLY why traditions and ethics matters. It is not convoluted. Today, more than ever, the standards are necessary, Win or lose !! Maybin's comments are irrelevant. One of the few times I applaud Michael Kay and his comments. The Yankees are NOT stuffy...they are classy.
Name: Prime David Price. In the early 2010’s when he was becoming an UFA he said he wouldn’t come to the Yankees because of the policy. And at the time Price was one of the best starters in the entire league, and the Yankees desperately needed pitching outside of CC.
There are certain players within the organization that are pushing the boundaries. And those that cut or shave immediately complain once they leave. Let them grow their beard or hair.
What an absurd video...One of the rare times I do agree with Kay's schilling though...He's right, that's the teams policy, to look clean cut...The way he blew a gasket trying to defend it though was over the top !!
Bro when America's team policy was Slavery, we ended up getting rid of it and still ended up looking really bad. You probably shouldn't really lean on that in any arguments.
Bryan Wilson and David Price were two players with beards who refused to play for Yankees because of that policy. This is the answer Michael is looking for.
Thanks Mike!! It does matter and it means as much today as it did yesterday! People are just so out of control today that they don’t realize how much of a mess they’ve become. Rules and Discipline are not abuse. It keeps things from being chaotic and spinning out of control!! The world is a free for all these days. They can’t even drive down the road without breaking 10 laws. We need to get back to discipline and following rules in all areas of our lives before it’s too late!!
@@jordy65056 The point is people do whatever they want these days, you can’t tell anyone anything!! I’m a retired corrections officer ( retired Captain) believe me if you let people do whatever they want with no laws or rules in place things spin out of control quickly. It doesn’t matter what we’re taking about sports teams, Jails, The Military, Schools, The work place. It’s all the same!!
@@reneroberts3555 i believe in freedom you should do whatever you want as long as you're not affecting others, or affecting your ability to do your job which obviously this doesn't do, I also believe rules need to make sense and not just for the hell of it
@@jordy65056 That’s true beards don’t harm anyone. I think that’s a stupid rule myself. But allowing hitters to flip their bats after home runs and showing up pitchers is BS! The batter doesn’t get a warning for that, but when the pitcher hits the next batter in the ribs with a fastball the ump warns the pitcher and both teams, or the benches clear and all Hell breaks loose. They’re professionals do they really need to flip their bat when they hit a HR? Showboating or Taunting shouldn’t be allowed, kids watch and emulate these players. We should be setting better examples for them on how to respect each other on and off the field. A better set of rules and consequences for breaking them would go a long way to putting an end to that nonsense. Taunting is a penalty in the NFL. In baseball ( these days) it’s “let the kids have fun”. Freedom is great but when our actions encroach on others rights and freedoms disaster is right around the corner in sports and in life. Sorry man, Excuse me for rambling!
I like the rule. It sends a message to the players. No single player is bigger than the team/ the franchise. Plus, every business has standards for their employees to uphold.
As a lifelong Yankee fan I say that I love the clean look of the Yankee players, it shows respect for the game and the fans by not looking like they just rolled out of bed and couldn't be bothered to shave and shower.
I have had a beard for almost 55 years. Nobody could ever tell me to cut it off. If I was good enough to play MLB, I would let the other 29 teams hire me, and I would tell the Yankees to take their backwards policy and put it where the sun dont shine.
Bro I like my job of 24 yrs because of the flexibility but quite frankly that’s the YANKs my man. The Old Man was a MF but he loved the franchise almost like a family member. And yes I respect that to the utmost. Great example of the no names on the jerseys. You may not believe it but of if I could own the Yanks I would still rock my “ goatee” 😂.
If they have a TEAM rule, follow it. It is simple. If not go to another team or buy your own team. Ridiculous! Any Yankee fan who does not like this rule is questionable. The team also does not wear names on the back. Why? Because it is about the TEAM!
pretty dumb way of thinking. if everything is about the team, then why do their individual stats matter?? why did judge and a rod win mvps if they only played about the team??
Kay NAILED it. "Any idiot player who needs long hair to perform? You dont even want him anyway." If your ability to perform relies on your look, or you feeling like you're being seen, or any kind of ego driven nonsense like that, your priorities are not aligned with putting team wins over your own personal preferences.
But the rule is not just about a certain hair length. It's also no beards. It's one thing to ban long beards like Brandon Marsh's (Phillies), but why why can't they have a short trimmed beard? Maybe 50 years ago bankers and lawyers were all clean-shaven but now some grow facial hair. Attire has also become more casual the last couple decades. Times change.
If having a beard and long hair is undisciplined, as if grooming is a true reflection of a person s character, then what is Juan Soto, from the age of 19, grabbing his crotch and staring at the pitcher in some weird, childish attempt at intimidation ? The Yankees dont want to look bad as an organization, but then go out and get a player who exhabits this type of obnoxious , classless behavior. Maybe worst yet, he is almost never criticized for this , and the teams he has played for turned a blind eye towards it, as it seems the Yankees intend to do.
As a yankee fan, this is the dumbest rule in sports. If I was a professional baseball player I’d never want to play for a team with such an outdated and ridiculous rule
Let's be honest...It's a STUPID STUPID STUPID rule!!! A beard doesn't make you sloppy... It would even be ok if you say any facial hair must be well groomed... Nobody would have a problem with that... Even if you say no long beards... That also is ok... I would be SHOCKED if it hasn't at least been a "part" of the decision making of some players. We have lost out on many players over the last decade... And honestly it's a boring look (the whole team with no facial hair)...
