That's a great tip of the hat from Don Airey to Keith Emerson playing some of Tarkus. Don is nothing but class. He took over from Jon Lord with dignity the way they did it ,,,it's on RU-vid, He holds Jon in high regards when he does the old Purple songs ..but he also puts his own stamp on things. He is a great player amongst the greats!!!!
@ 4:02: Don's amp is a hot-rodded version of a typical Leslie 147 amp. Originally, those amps come with 6550 power tubes but he uses KT88s instead. For this you need to change the power transformer and do some modifications to the circuit in order get more power out of the amp (maybe a new output transformer will also be necessary). However if you put EL34s into an original 147 amp they will die pretty soon and take some other parts with them (I know from experience). And they sound rather flat and harsh if the amp is pushed into overdrive. 6550s or KT88s (if possible) are way better sounding tubes than EL34s anyway (at least within a Leslie amp). All in all, output power (40, 60 or 80 Watts) isn't gonna change too much in those Leslies. It may affect the headroom to a certain degree but that's it. The volume level will be more or less the same. More importantly, Don is using JBL 2482s as upper drivers for his Leslies. That's mostly why his Leslies are significantly louder than original ones. Loudspeakers have a huge impact, more so than most people might think.
The interviewer is like "Mr. know it all" and comes across as annoying. 5:12 Dude: keep yourself healthy, like you do! Don: being on the road with DP of course it's very healthy! One can tell that Don wanted to keep this interview short.
If i was a reporter and HUGE fan of a person I'm interviewing, I would kinda throw the written questions away ans ask INTERESTING things. Things interested people wanna know. Explicit questions. Referring to things that happened in the past. Actually, I thought about this already. That's how Don is rather personal
