2:19 the fact that Speirs actually knows about the stories being passed around about him and he still offers them cigarettes makes the scene that much better
He mentions in a conversation with Lipton after they take Foy that he wants the stories to spread, and intentionally doesn't correct them or clear them up. It doesn't matter if he actually did those things, what matters is the infamy it spreads among the men so they follow him.

It's much better for a soldier to think that if he misbehaves that Speirs will have no problem shooting them. It keeps them scared of him so they do what they don't doubt his orders and he wasn't cruel or mean about it, just like is shown in this scene. he probably heard them talking about him and decided to use the opportunity, you can bet those guys reinforced that hole s soon as he left, even though a higher ranking officer told them they didn't have to (Dyke), simply so they wouldn't risk pissing of Speirs and all he was doing was trying to keep them save.
I don't know what that has to do with this chain but yes, Dale Dye retired a Captain and has since been a military adviser on products such as Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Brothers In Arms etc. and also plays Col. Sink in almost every production including the character, I've never seen a Sink who wasn't played by him, he even voiced him in Brothers In Arms.
The hole they were in did look pretty shallow. You can see that their torsos were completely exposed. So if they had to repel an enemy attack or hide from an artillery bombardment, they wouldn't have been well-protected.

It’s interesting to me how most of the main stars of BoB never developed big acting careers. Meanwhile, several then unknown actors who played minor roles in the series went on to become Hollywood A-listers (Michael Fassbender, James MacAvoy and Tom Hardy).

The stars of the show were Winters, Nixon, Lipton, Guarnere, Compton, Randleman, Perconte, Liebgott, Webster, Malarky and Luz as those were the only ones with significant screen time throughout most episodes of the series.
Yes but they didn't have large roles, Tom Hardy was in 3 or 4 scenes. Colin Hanks was in one episode. Fassbender is mainly a background character despite being an original Toccoa man and a Technical Sergeant. McAvoy has one episode, Pegg is only in one or two episodes. The ones I'd actually mention when talking about the cast are Damian Lewis and Michael Cudlitz.
I have watched Band of Brothers more than two dozen times over the years and didn't realize Michael Fassbender was in it until a couple nights ago. He and James McAvoy were on Conan for the next X-Men movie and mentioned they had met on the set of BoB, I was all like, "Whaaaaa?" and then I was all like, "Nooooo", then I watched this video and now I'm all like, "Say whaaaaa?" lolol

According to Webster's book Parachute Infantry, Spiers, who grew up in Weymouth, MA, had a pretty thick Boston accent. I wonder how this show would've been if Matthew Settle adopted the accent for the character.
The fact that they turned down the cigarettes meant they were absolutely terrified. When you’re in that kind of combat environment, cigarettes are golden and with resupply being staggered, cigarettes are as valuable as they are in prisons. And it was cold af where they were at. Nobody turns down free cigarettes. Hell, when we trained in the field, cigarettes were valuable because eventually everyone runs out
Lt. Speirs is the Achilles of the 20th century. agressive fearless running and charging in an open area shooting Krauts is just facinating and unthinkable bravery. I hope he is resting in peace now in heaven.
Michael Fassbender had been in the show from the very beginning, ever since the first episode. You could easily see him in a few brief scenes during boot camp & training.
Speirs knew of the "stories" about him and he knew the effect they would have if they were allowed to spread, hence, he never did anything to downplay them. Further, he actually embellished one of them himself. The Sgt he shot "for being drunk" was actually drunk however Speirs shot him in self defense as most of his platoon testified to after the incident happened. The man tried to shoot Speirs for not allowing him to charge at the Germans. While the issue with the Prisoners is never fully resolved int eh film and Speirs himself makes it appear to have been just a story when Lipton asks him about directly. Sadly, as Dick Winters later relayed, Speirs confessed to having murdered the 6 POW's on his death bed.
@@NaruSanavai Get your 1911 out and shot them through the hand and then bandage them. They are out of combat forever and the germans have to spend ressources to care for them. There is always a way to prevent something like this. Spiers is a murderer and nothing more.
I think he heard them and he was playng around :). Tertius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest son of a bitch in the whole Roman legion
after watching the series so many times, i noticed micheal fassbender is actually in alot of scenes in most episodes its just he doesnt have many talking scenes, 90% of the time you see someone carrying a 30 cal or firing a 30 cal its him or hes right beside the guy firing the 30 cal hes just not as noticable during the combat scenes because of it being so fast paced/chaotic but hes in most of them
Jesus Spear is super calm, look like a nice guy and act like a disciplined Platoon leader... But these few seconds of screen time was enough to scare the shit out of me... i was waiting for him to just draw his colt and kill the three soldiers like that... What a scene... What a series

Fact is Speirs was a stellar leader of soldiers. The men under his command had the utmost respect for him. The drunk sergeant raised his rifle to him. The POWs he shot were a matter of mission exigence. Nobody could blame him.
Spiers ended up being the Spandau prison commander for the rest of his career ,Spandau prison held only one prisoner and that was Rudolph Hess ,Rudolph Hess flew a Messchersmitt 110 I think to UK to surrender

Slight correction: He ran Spandau prison as Governor from 1958 until 1961, before moving on to Southeast Asia (Laos mission). During the time he was Governor, there were still several Nazi War Criminals incarcerated there. Nazi Prisoner Albert Speer (one of the 6 inmates at the prison at the time) was said to have despised Spiers; I am certain Major Speirs took some measure of satisfaction from that.

Fassbender is also in the Episode of the POWs. Just as they’re walking into the prison and also when they’re interpreting one of the prisoners experiences there. Which is a little ironic seeing as Fassbender is fluent in German! He was born there!

Speirs has that fixed gaze which can be a sign of danger. Somewhere between a ten thousand yard stare of the combat fatigued, and "do not mess with me".
its funny to watch this now having seen so many Fassbender movies. I remember this character from the show. Not watch the series for about two years and he's now risen to quite famous heights since last watching the show.
Favorite television program of all time. I'm going to make my kids watch this to experience the last best generation. At 32, hopefully I won't have to be a part of the next best generation. I suppose someone would have to peel potatoes however.
Both stories about Spiers were true. He shot his own sergeant for not following an order and, more controversially, did shoot prisoners. If you search around on youtube you can find an interview with Dick Winters, who confirmed this happened, and even cleared it with Spiers before they depicted this in BoB. Spiers was fine with it.

Well, every big actor started somewhere small. Look at the cast of "Saving Private Ryan", supporting roles by Vin Diesel, Barry Pepper, and now Matt Damon is in every TVset and even on Mars.

Professor X didn’t last one episode. Bane made it to the second to last episode. Magneto survived to the end like a boss and he was also an OG from Taccoa. Abraham Ford made it to the end too (no Negan to stop him)

Not trying to pointlessly correct you, but you shouldn’t refer to the German Army as Nazis. While I’m sure many of them were, it completely dehumanises them, and paints them as a fascist monolith. When most soldiers, like any soldier in any war, had very little idea of what’s going on beyond “I need to fight for my country”.
Spiers had a complete understanding of Eastern philosophy without even knowing probably.....in one episode he stated you need to live as you're already dead.
And Tom Hardy. Lot's of Brit actors with Stephen Graham too. It blew my mind after I watched Battlestar Galactica and later realized one of the main characters is also in BOB.
The "shot a soldier for being drunk" rumor is a bit twisted to make it sound more terrifying. In reality, he gave the soldier an order to hold his position due to his impairment by alcohol. The soldier refused, Speirs persisted and then the soldier pointed his rifle at him. Speirs then shot the man in self-defense. Speirs' original plan was just to leave the soldier's drunk ass behind while the everyone else did their job. It didn't become violent until the soldier threatened/tried to shoot Speirs. Speirs' men saw what happened and knew the situation. But after spreading it around to the people who didn't see it happen, it very slowly but surely became "Speirs got pissed off that one of his men was drunk and so he murdered him."
while the soliders heard "Lt Dike said that? well forget what I said then" Speirs was actually saying "Lt Dike never had the makings of a varsity athlete"
