Back in 2003, Alex Arthur defended his British super featherweight title against Michael Gomez. Nobody gave Gomez a hope - It turned into an epic fight.
two warriors big respect to both both did good things in their careers at a time when british boxing wasn't where it is now. great fighters need them back today
+irish rover Really? I thought that was the flag of the Ivory Coast :o Gomez lived in Manchester, had his fan base in Manchester, most of his big fights in Manchester. He was one of the city's most popular boxers along with Hatton. So yeah, it was a special time for Manchester boxing.
I found this fight by accident and I'll tell you, this was a fight ! This Gomez kid or Armstrong is some warrior, does the Irish proud. I know he had problems and was a big partier but had he just dedicated himself to boxing I think he would have been a world champ. Props to Arthur for his effort too but Gomez put a beating on him.
GOMEZ : One of life,s true Warrior,s with One of the biggest Lion Heart,s i,have had the pleasure of knowing personally & still do !! Ps Keep your eyes on is Son MICHAEL GOMEZ JR
Gomez on that night in that condition and mindset would have taken some beating, true warrior of British boxing he never had a reverse gear just forward,
Me and michael spent lots of time with each other from the night the fight was set 12 weeks to the night !! before were i actually picked michael up of the floor outside a club !! Showing how he was a real professional which people didnt give him credit for !! As to get him ready mentally and physically for this performance im proud to of been a part of being and knowing him as close as i did godbless you michael X PS The atmosphere was THE BEST IVE EVER BEEN IN and ive BEEN IN MANY I PROMISE YOU from Bruno/ Tyson1 & 2 with Lennox vs Holyfield 1 & 2 to Ben v Mcclelland MANY MANY MORE this stands out personally after this Michael had some great fights that you forget we nearly stopped AMIR kHAN in the 2nd round after this putting him down only for khan to show his much younger Age and at is prime to stop michael later on in the fight were is long Career was taking its toll right up to the end when Fighting Ricky BURNS (who is or has been never given probably the credit due as a great fighter & A Lovely guy of Boxing ) were i can remember Michael saying to me after "ITS JUST NOT THERE NO MORE ANT " AND AGAIN SHOWED A SIDE PEOPLE DIDNT THINK HE HAD BY SAYING ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ! and hanging the gloves up IN A CAREER WHERE HE SHOULD ALWAYS BE PROUD OF WITH NO REGRETS OF ANY PART OF HOW IT WAS OR HOW HE WAS " BECAUSE HOW HE WAS MADE HIM WHAT HE WAS a TRUE WARRIOR X
Awesome fight! Gomez just marches through the fire and despite Arthur have his hands up, those punches landing on his guard were rattling him just the same. Tough kid Arthur, but man they could/should have stopped it three rounds earlier.
It was a silly idea trying to stand in a phone box with Gomez he was a proper scrapper with a head of granite. Plus he had Billy Graham in the corner who was a master at conditioning and inside fighting.
End of round two. Arthur has comfortably kept Gomez at bay with the jab, landing thirty two to Gomez's four. Crowd - walk in the feckin park. Round three - Gomez sets about Arthur like a tramp on chips. I love boxing. I love it.
Just saw an interview with Alex Arthur . He said he was weight drained for this fight , was on anti biotics .. Had to lose 8lbs on the day of the weigh in and took 2attempts on the scales .. He normally rehydrated to 10stone 10lbs on fight night . This time he only weighed 9stone 5lbs . Hence the effect of the punches
gomez out boxed alex for sure but check the size of alex at his natural weight here (huge weight loss) twitter.com/AlexArthur1?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor
A lot of disrespect was shown to Gomez that night by knuckle draggers with a silly nationalistic chip on their shoulder. Not one of them would have the balls to confront Gomez, and fortunately they left this fight as red faced as Arthur....
Yea I read in his book people kept calling his hotel room and they shut his hot water off and people were yelling outside his hotel room keeping him up all night and he still won!
@@stevengruber57 still wouldn’t make it right. It takes considerable courage to get in a boxing ring; dockheads chanting who the fucking hell are you would run a mile if they had to face him in a ring one to one.
That MC was so handsome! He & the legendary ref: John Coyle said the best fight & atmosphere ever. The announcer is now 51 & still gorgeous with beautiful silver hair mmmm x
I love British fights but the commentators (like in the us) are sooooooo biased. "The Arthur jab was sharp and accurate" in the 2nd round and that kid Gomez was dodging most of them. Oh wait I just heard in the next round out the guy actually even mentioned he was nervous for him. Christ!
he beat burns who was 3 weight world champ and he was a world champ himself so the lad done not bad remember the beating burns gave Gomez but he was one tough fucker gomez
Another so called world class Brit fighter exposed. We have many fighters who the pundits label " WORLD Class " after a few fights, the list is endless, today in 2018, the Smith brothers, Liam Walsh, Terry Flannagan, Lee Selby, I could go on. The world titles they have held or hols are 2nd or 3rd division titles, none of them have faced the fiercesome fighters from the other side of the pond, like the Mexicans and South Americans. If we went back to the days of One or maybe two belts, none of the aforementioned would sniff a world title. As a boxing fan it makes my blood boil the way Sky sport and all the pundits beef up our overrated fighters.
I think any man that steps in the ring deserves props and praise! Think you will find 2 of the smith brothers will of fought canelo the pound for pound kind after tonight lol
