Michael Gould of Cody is one of only a handful of non-Japanese to hold the title of “Dai Shihan” (Grand Master of Shakuhachi, a bamboo flute). He learns and teaches world-wide from his Park County home.
Great interview. I've been playing the Native American flute for a couple years, and am now interested in learning the Shakuhachi flute. As a Buddhist, I can really appreciate the deep connection here. Thank you for this!
I am so blessed to have Michael as my teacher. Palms together and many thanks to Shawn Rinzoh Head for recommending years ago. Michael is an amazing person. His understanding of the Shakuhachi is otherworldly and his teaching style is remarkable. I really love that he teaches the diamonds and skills from all the Ryu's. I hope to be a student of his for many years to come. Be well Sensei, many blessings.
About 32 years ago I actually bought a group of shakuhachi amongst them a pvc one. I love playing it still till this day, my favorite , believe it or not, is the pvc one, the notes are very sharp and full. Anyway, these are beautiful soulful and bluesy instruments, simple in construction, but deep if you know the technique. This gentleman player is awesome in his ability and eloquent in his teaching and explanation on this little known, but beloved flute.
Wow, that is some great shakuhachi playing. Your Yuu that you've fine tuned as an option are really, really nice for ABS! Plays beautifully- not all t he nuances of bamboo, but the Yuu comes next in my opinion.
