Michael Heseltine is a politician with a long political memory. He heard Neville Chamberlain declare war on Germany in 1939. He saw Suez unfold. He attended Churchill’s funeral.
He’s served Conservative prime minister after Conservative prime minister and became the man who eventually even brought down Margaret Thatcher. He never reached the highest office himself, but having seen so many who did up close, and witnessed so much of Britain’s political journey over the last century, there can be few who can offer more perspective, more wisdom about the state we are in and where we might yet go, than he.
In the latest of our extended political interviews, Lewis talks to Heseltine about his life, his journey, his passionate belief that we must re-enter the EU and how he worries that the current Home Secretary is echoing the rhetoric and division of Enoch Powell.

I guess he was someone who thoroughly supported market principles, but thought they should be carefully controlled to avoid damaging people’s lives and communities. Smart enough to see through Enoch Powell and support the Labour principles of fairness and equality. He certainly comes across with more compassion than the current crop of Tory b@st@rds - I wondered whether even Margaret Thatcher would appear objectively more likeable and caring compared to Braverman, Sunak, Patel, Truss, More-daunt, Rees-Mogg and the rest (contemplates this for a second and then shudders in horror as if a freezing cold breeze had wafted through the room).

@MrMusicbyMartin Loathe her blockedness a much as I did, yes, I think she was more genuine, Heseltine certainly was... My mate reckons he would be just as bad as they are now - if he was there now. But he has a humility and self-candour that I can hear him saying 'Maybe I would'... He seems an ordinary, decent man! Certainly a human being and not too focused on Power, (Like his 'tarzan' nickname suggested) But the current crop are very distorted , hideous human beings, Truss, Brava... and the other ones, distorted human-beings and think that's how history will see them

Practically a third of Heseltine’s age, Lewis’ grasp of political history is impressive & allowed him to actually react to answers rather than blindly pursue a list of pre-scripted questions. Although I hated the Thatcher government he was part of & his contribution to the housing crisis via the selling of social housing, his intellect & conscience are far superior to anything found in Government today.

It's gone down the drain precisely because his brand of liberal politics won the day, defeating the vastly superior mind and honorable beliefs of Powell. You reap what you sow.

Michael Heaeltine, so right on so many things and genuinely wanted and still does want a better world. Why on earth be a Conservative? That they wanted to vote down the race relations act, and he steered them right. What if he hadn't been there? A true statesman and deserves respect, just wish he hadn't been a Conservative, the most destructive force in the country, at least in my lifetime.

A great interview. I am left-wing , but I have a lot of respect for Michael Hesetine. I don't agree with everything he says, but I agree with 100% on Brexit. The two Tories I have respect fot are Michael Heseltine and Keneth Clark.

Very entertaining, bringing back memories of days gone bye. It's difficult to believe that we were led by Margaret Thatcher, a woman with a lot of sense and plainness. Today's global sm world has changed the political lanscape put of all recognition.

There’s some respect for Michael here in the Liverpool, despite his Tory credentials, as he pulled money from the EU to help rejuvenate the area after the riots. (That the riots could be the fault of his boss to a great degree is perhaps unrelated.) I think it’s noteworthy that Liverpool voted strongly to remain in the Brexit referendum; I think many of us remember how European unity helped out city. Interesting to note that he was on the left of the party back then, which nowadays would qualify him for Kier Starmer’s Labour.

This proves how rich, powerful men believe in their attempts at being honorable with absolutely no understanding of what it’s like to be struggling to survive as so many people are. This is why it’s so important to have a genuine, broad church opposition, rather than an imitation of one.

Heseltine is the last remnant of the humble, grounded Conservative leader. When I look at him and then look at squishy Rishi or BS Boris, I see how far politics as a whole has failed. Our country will never regain its place in the world without more like him.

Been involved in local politics in a small way since the early 1960's. And in those pre Thatcher days dispite political differences we where always respectfully of others views. Remember many hours spent outside polling stations having heated but civilised discussion.

Unfortunately the sale of council houses as lead to a complete shortage of social housing, privatisation has lead to the complete disaster in services we see today. Not exactly two things I would have been proud of achieving.
@lynnehayward7309
@lynnehayward7309 Год назад
I disagree with the council houses being sold, it's the only way as a newly divorced woman with adult children to support could afford one. The problem was having no obligation to reinvest on replacement of those sold, often at silly low prices (which I didn't benefit from), but my neighbour flogged there's off to then move their cannabis indoor farm to Wales! Social housing would be better not on estates, but intermingled in private housing. The ex council estate on which I still live has improved as owners have taken pride in doing them up and they're most bought by first time owners.
@JoannaHammond
@JoannaHammond Год назад
@@lynnehayward7309 I understand your point, but as you stated the policy did not force realistic prices or construction of replacement homes. It should have done, every property lost should have been replaced.
@j.harrison6744
@j.harrison6744 Год назад
80% of social housing in London has gone to people born abroad. So yeah, adding 10+ million people to the population since '89 has easily been the biggest cause of the supposed "housing shortage." But you people never want to point to that giant herd of elephants in the room...
@j.harrison6744
@j.harrison6744 Год назад
@@JoannaHammondEvery property was replaced. Under 'Right to Buy' roughly 2 million homes were sold. Between 1997 and 2010, 2.61 million council homes were constructed alone. Again, that elephant. Look at it!
@JoannaHammond
@JoannaHammond Год назад
@@j.harrison6744 Can I have a source for that information please. From my own research back when right to buy was introduced there where around 6.7 million council house, there are now less than 2 million left. Further, of those sold, 40% are now owned by private landlords renting them back out.
