Was a little hesitant in certain areas of Gary roaming around by myself . Kept the rental car within close range at all times . Not the best place for tourists but was awesome to see all the MJ spots . Watch yesterday's video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d6X0L-UEOUc.html
Heading that way now, I haven't had a computer for a few days, so now I'm getting caught up on all of my #DailyWoo vid's (=: Many Thanks again for all that you do to bring us a smile, put joy in our hearts and good & positive vibes in our souls, Adam
Same here #CatinaMarieClaytor , I was almost 5 yrs old when the Jackson 5 signed with Barry Gordy in 1969. Michael has made so many memories for so many of his fans. He dearly loved and respected his fans (= Loved that about him too
It's a bummer this video of Michael Jackson's home town of Gary, Indiana elicited many negative comments regarding poor people, and where they live. This is poverty, folks. And a not-so-gentle reminder, this is also part of America. As always, thanks for the video Adam.
I am from Gary, Indiana and in the 60tys & 70tys Gary, Indiana was a beautiful place to live. Right behind the Jackson house was a historic black high school named, ROOSEVELT HIGH and home of the Panthers. The elementary school he went to was GARNETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL located right off of 21st Avenue on the westside of Gary. I grew up 5 blocks from Jackson St. Mike lived on 2300 Jackson which was 5 blocks west of Broadway and I lived on 2300 Massachusetts St.one block east of Broadway. Gary, Indiana was a great place to grow up back then, But around 1990 Gary United States Steel mills started going down and the rest is history as they say. Currently they have begun to rebuild Gary, Indiana with new hospitals, new casino, possible Michael Jackson museum, Amazon just built a new factory there, So I believe the place is on it's way back and I am happy for the home town to be beautiful again. Much love everyone.
It was a well needed to see video. Believe it or not a lot off my friends and family don’t have the means to leave or want to. I love my city I was Js bless to make it out like Jackson’s. Once you make it out you don’t go back cause you already know you can get stuck there. This is so sad. I cry every time I go back home for a funeral. That’s the only time I go back and I don’t go to many of them no more. It gets very uncomfortable every time I go back. My daughter is 16 now and always ask if she can go to my home town with me. I tell her no it’s not safe. I have to put a vest on some times until I hook up with my brother or friend’s. It really comes alive after dark
FUN FACTS: In the same month of August 1958, the singer Madonna was born on August 16 and 13 days later just four and a half hours car drive away Michael Jackson was born. Michael and Madonna became the most successful male and female artists of the 1980s. Also, they went together as a date to the 1991 Academy (Oscars) Award. Madonna said they had kissed and he was shy at first. But, then got into it.
damn He and his brothers entertained the world so that they wouldn't have to live in such minimal conditions, Michael rose from almost nothing to becoming one of if not the greatest entertainer to ever walk the earth, it's so inspiring to me, RIP THE KING OF POP
From someone that has lived near Gary my whole life it’s really sad how run down those historic places have gotten. Luckys definitely should be a museum. My gma worked with his dad Joe for many years, it’s always sad how those Jackson boys had to live growing up. It definitely worked out for them but they never were able to have a true childhood.
It's sad the Gary is a shell of itself now. When I was born there it was a GREAT place to live and grow up. I could play in the park until sundown. Tons of stores and cinemas. I did not realize I living so close to MJ and clan until they were famous.
Hasty retreat? Gunshots perhaps? That was sad, really sad, to see so much wonderful history in such decay.... I am glad you showed it to us before it is completely gone. Thanks also for taking a risk to do so! Great vlog, Adam.
When you stand out like a sore White thumb...you represent a soft target.....because folks know you don't belong there. Scary Gary??? Really? Reminds me of a big Irish college kid I had as a summer helper when my full time helper would go on vacation.....6'2" football player who would literally lock the door in between stops or when I went in to get paid. I would always tell him...if you're afraid stay home. He always seemed to regain that jock swagger once we got back to the suburbs west of Chicago.
I visited that little house on September 28, 2012 after touring the Motown Museum in Detroit. Along with an older brother, I only saw two ladies and a little girl during my approximately 30 minutes visit.
Glad I found this on the 9 year anniversary of his passing. I miss him a lot and it was amazing to see this footage. Thank you for this! Bonus points for it being uploaded the day before my birthday 🙏🏾
I must say, i really enjoyed this video. It is so humbling to see what basic accommodations housed such a talented family. They came from virtually nothing and likely would have amounted to nothing has their father not been the father he was. He had many faults, but without him, those kids wouldn’t have been the family they turned out to be.
Claro. Ninguém tem que condena.lo . Ele formou os filhos bem , principalmente Michael. UM verdadeiro príncipe em postura , tudo , carinhoso....🧡🧡❤❤❤❤❤❤🇧🇷👄👄👄👄👄
I’m originally from Indiana lived there til I was 19 years old and I’ve been through Gary quite a few times. And I lived in Kokomo for about 7 years and it’s like an hour and thirty minutes away from Fairmount Indiana where James Dean grew up. And he’s right Gary Indiana downtown is mainly empty and abandoned buildings. Just like the school that James Dean went to as a young boy is abandoned. But my favorite place to visit is the James dean museum is an amazing to visit and in Indianapolis another is the Madam Walker Legacy Center which used to be Madam CJ Walkers headquarters until her passing in May 25, 1919( aged 51) due to kidney failure and complications of hypertension.
Looks like you ended your day in Miller which is a really nice part of Gary. I used to spray lawns in Gary. i also got all my tattoos in Gary, IN at a place called Famous Legs. It's a really cool town and I hope one day it can recover some of it's greatness.
Thank You very much Adam for making this one, man!! You risked life and limb for us by doing this one and it's very much appreciated!!!! You got to be really careful in Gary these days, it's definitely not a safe area by any means!!!! I can't imagine Michael (if he were still alive) ever visiting Gary again let alone buying/building a house there for any reason!!!! Glad you wasn't hurt or worse while making this video..stay safe and safe travels as well. Take care, Trish in West Virginia
Thank you so much for making this vid, at almost the cost of your life. I see you wasted no time getting out of there. Its sad to see the town pretty much abandoned but at least they keep the King of Pop's family home looking nice. Considering where they all live now and the beautiful homes and so forth they have its nice to see the humble beginnings where it all started. If it had not been for the father they would've probably still be in humble status but a lot happier and a lot less miserable. MJ would probably still be here with us. But then we would have never gotten to know these guys nor their talents. I visited Motown years ago, the house used in the beginning, when I visited relatives. It was very humbling to say the least.
Michael Jackson RIP the Biggest popstar of all time. He was my first favorite singer I had his poster on my wall in 89. And when we went to Disneyland there was Captain EO it blew my mind the King of Pop has his own show that just validated he was the coolest.😎
Adventures by George The amount of talent w singing and dancing and laughing in that tiny house just couldnt contain that energy no wonder they were constantly on the road they literally couldnt fit back in that house. I wish he was still here!
How sweet, if you listen closely you can almost hear the crying and screams from the repeated beatings bestowed upon Michael and his siblings by their abusive alcoholic father Joe who forced them to “earn their keep”. Smdh
I grew up about 20 min south of there and world never go as far in as you were! It was a really nice city up until the 60's. My grandparents lived there then. The one time I took a wrong turn and ended up on the outskirts of town I was stopped by a cop and told not to stop at any stop signs or lights. Just to go straight through them! True story
Awesome to see that Jackson history and sad to see what's happened to the neighborhoods and buildings. Also, got to admit that we both sat around humming the song Gary Indiana from the Music Man while we watched: Gary, Indiana, Gary Indiana, Not Louisiana, Paris, France, New York, or Rome, but-- Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana, Gary Indiana, My home sweet home.
A lil FYI... The street was never named after them or technically renamed.... In Gary Broadway runs north & south its the biggest main street if you go East of Broadway the street names are states but if you go West of Broadway its the presidents names it was just a coincidence Joe Jackson found a house on "Jackson Street" in Gary they added The Jackson Family sign and newer signs a lil after Michael passed... For weeks and weeks that corner was crawling with people from all over the world literally!!! Police were posted up all over that area for safety
gary ind should do bus tours or something like that to upkeep those buildings historical a definitely, they might be able to make museums too for this place ..its a sad feeling looking at history gone to the ruins of the gone past like this,,,,thank Adam for this video good to see the king of pop hometown
I just went there today (I live about ten minutes from there), and it seems that whoever maintains the property has painted over all of the names and replaced all of the bricks that were written on. They put up two big poster boards for people to write on instead of the property, but people just scribbled over other people's names and then resorted to again writing on the fence and bricks. It seems all of the writing is from recently so I think they just painted over it again. It must be a pain fixing it back up because people are taking knives and carving stuff into the fence. If you drive past the back of the property, people stuck their arms through the fence and scribbled on the back of the shed(?) behind the home. Also, that tribute statue at the front corner is still missing. I read they were supposed to put it back up last summer, but for some reason they never did.
Great tour Adam. It's sad to see towns across America being abandoned like your travels across Route 66. I glad you show them of course. Always be safe.
Glad you stayed safe. Thanks for the awesome vlog. My son loves MJ. He was only a baby when MJ passed but he really loves him and his music. So thank you for teaching him about and showing him these places.
Adam - not far is abandoned nike missile base in Portage Indiana. Gate is usually wide open. There are not any no trespassing signs either. You should check it out!
I was recently very close and wanted so badly to visit this home but was scared because of the reputation of Gary. Someone said, "Well, you can drive by, just don't get out of your car." What fun is that? Makes me very sad.
*This city of gary was blessed by God was chosen to have been born the king of pop Michael Jackson, I hope one day to have the opportunity to meet her great video friend greetings from Brazil*
Tampa Jay Aaaaaaaand going by that logic, this would make the artist formerly known as Prince.... "King"....right? Is Elvis now "The Duke of Rock and Roll"? 😂
Hi Adam, Gary Indiana look very different then another's places in Indiana that they're nice. Thank you so much for sharing. Besos from Puerto Rico 🤗😍👍
I loved this video one of the very best Micheal Jackson I still remember seeing captain eo at Disneyland and thinking this is the best movie ever also my first girlhood crush great times rest in peace Michael have a great day Adam and thanks again for the video.😊
Lanea they should have black people teling our stories not white people white people need to tell the stories of how they treated us. Yes awful and still do till this day
My old hometown from 1955 to 1971. I lived towards the Miller area and went to William A Wirt high school graduated in 1970 and left in August 1971. My brothers live in Valpo.
gave the thumbs up not only because it's a good video (as always), but because you braved that town alone! I have just driven through and was scared poo-less.
I live 2 cities east of there. 4 miles away from that last mural in your video. The crime rate here is normal like any other average city. It's amazing how much of a difference a few miles can make. If you're still out this way and need some food place tips. Let me know. Great video.
I live in East Chicago, the city next to Gary, and I agree that many parts are unsafe, but overall it pales in comparison to parts of Chicago that are pretty much war zones. Gary may still be dangerous, but it's not as bad as it was years back. Look up "Great Gary Arson 1997" which destroyed and damaged part of the downtown area.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I am from Gary. Was up there just over a month ago with my older brother reminiscing. And stopped right where you are to take pics of the Jackson’s home which was only a few miles from our child hood home. Awesome video!! Very sad to come back years later to see the decline of Gary.
Had my cab driver take me over there one year when it was still a private residence. Of course, now it's all dolled up compared to then. I was able to walk around the house at the time since there was no fence and still have the footage I shot on a Mini DV tape.
