I was about 9 years old when this song was released and I remember it vividly because it was huge and everyone was listening to it. I already loved MJ in the Jackson 5, so when he came out with his Off The Wall album, my brother and I immediately went out to buy it. I listened to that whole album all the time back then. MJ, just like Elvis Presley before him, had a presence about them, and with loads of talent.

My favorite dance song of all time

This is one of Michael Jackson's BEST songs in my opinion. Billie Jean comes first for me, then this, then Smooth Criminal. He was so young and untainted here. RIP King of Pop. AND OMG THE CHRIS TUCKER ON KARAOKE IN RUSH HOUR 2 IS AMAZING. They were really good friends. And you're right, he's just feeling the music dancing and you can see how it evolved into his future choreo.

I'm old enough to remember when this song was first released, lol. In fact, this was the song playing when I first walked through the door at the first junior disco I ever went to! When I hear it I immediately think of the Carlton Suite in Liskeard, Cornwall for that reason! Anyway, you were commenting about whether Michael had taken a break before coming back with this song. No he didn't. I believe the list you're following is for Michael Jackson's solo releases only, isn't it? If so, it won't include all the times he was back with The Jacksons (what they were renamed as after the Jackson 5) releasing music with them. So in the mid to late 70's he was recording and performing with his brothers again, releasing several albums with them and having hits like Blame It On The Boogie, Destiny and Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground). You need to look up a The Jackson 5/TheJacksons discography for all his work with them. After their late 70's stuff, he then released Off The Wall in 1979, which was his first solo album as an adult. Then the following year (before Thriller) he was back with his brothers again, releasing the album Triumph. They had several hits from that album, the biggest being Can You Feel It (I'm sure you'll know that song, it's been covered and sampled quite a bit) and Walk Right Now was a great single from that album too. Then at the end of 1982 he released his Thriller album, which was "slightly" successful, lol!! Also, in 1984, after Thriller but before Bad, he was back with The Jacksons yet again, releasing the album Victory, which had the singles Torture and State Of Shock. So in the periods where he didn't release any solo albums he was releasing albums with his brothers. I don't think he ever stopped working in the 70's and 80's. His releases in the very early 70's where a mixture of solo songs and Jackson 5 songs too. Amazing performer.

This song was heavily inspired by Marvin Gaye’s Got To Give It Up. Both excellent songs. This one in particular showed Michael’s prowess as an adult vocalist, as well as his songwriting and compositional skills. What an opening track. You are also correct that it is a Star Wars reference. The original lyrics as heard in the demo say “keep on, with the love, don’t stop”. It was later changed to The Force. Michael was a Star Wars fan. He spent his last Christmas at Carrie Fisher’s house in December 2008, 30 years after this song was written.

Great reaction as always, Lee! I loved this song, still do. And you're so right about the sad trajectory of his life. I can't help but think how gorgeous MJ was in those years, in his purely natural looks, compared to later, altered looks (& I'm sure I'll be eviscerated for saying that, but oh well). But it was a real treat to have two great lookers in this one video!

Michael was technically still with the Jacksons when Off The Wall came out. So think of this period from Destiny/Off the Wall/Triumph/Thriller/Victory as him still officially in the group.
