It's so crazy how much his peers were in Awe of him. I've never seen no other athlete in any of sport ever be treated that way. That is a direct testament of his Greatness!
Ahmad2423 - definitely. Winning and always conquering everybody else with such consistency forced that respect. And this was when almost every team tried to win and not rebuild every fucking season.
Jordan won the MVP,defensive player of the year, all star MVP,the slam dunk contest, the scoring title, steals title and made the all nba first and defensive team in one season ..unbelievable!!!
Yep! Crazy! How many guys would challenge a dunk like David Robinson did against Shaq in today's ASG? Yes DRob was put on a poster, but that's what made that dunk so incredible! All this stuff: "Look for these guys to buckle down in the last two minutes." Just look at MJ's last ASG in 2003! That was one of the best because it was played at such a high level. I believe MJ and Kobe brought a sense of order to those games.
@mt883 That is a monstrous lineup. It really is too bad about Hill and Hardaway with those injuries that kept them from reaching their potential and teaching these young kids how to play smart basketball.
At the 4:23 mark, MJ was doing the hand signal that saluted his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, also known as the "Q-Dogs." Shaq's a part of the same frat as well. I'm guessing by watching this sequence @ 4:23, MJ was just giving his frat brother some props lol!
MJ, Scottie, Prime Penny/Hill/Shaq. That's got to be the most athletic all-star starting 5 ever. And MJ/Scottie weren't even in their athletic primes in '96.
@frankjuana13as: those were retroed on January 17, 2001, msrp was $120. They will be re-retroed for christmas this year which rumors have it msrp will be $180.
this was a controversial ending when they awarded MJ the mvp. you could hear some poeple booeing in the background b/c they wanted shaq to win the mvp. i think the right choice was made though
@wornoutshoes11 Hey, I am as big an MJ fan as anyone! I have great respect for MJ, Magic, Bird, etc. I hated when MJ left the game, then I started watching KB, and saw that he was the closest thing to Jordan. I've played basketball all my life on many levels, and I agree there are few today that hold a candle to the "old dogs." You saying Kobe is the most overrated player in the history of the game is just ridiculous. You think the guys you mentioned didn't have help winning their rings?
@sydneyboi4fun Stop saying nuts ! MJ has 6 titles and is retired, KB got 5 and he's still playing. Shaq and Gasol don't have much. MJ is best player ever for sure, but KB is certainly part of greatest more than all other players... And about defense, not that KB scored 81pts! Only Wilt can say better.
@h3rcvry yeah right! LOL let me ask u 1 thing about that vid... who the hell are those player's making comments??? LOL and it says new millenium! u can have your so called "best in the new millenium" kid... they have nothing on the MJ's, MAGIC's and BIRD's of the old era...
Hardaway and Jordan had good synergy. Hardaway would have made a great Bull if he had played for them. Similar kind of player as that prototype Bull during Jordan's era.
I thought I was the only one who thought that! I remember watching this game with my dad and him saying: "I betcha Shaq is jealous of Penny and Michael playing well together." I don't know about that, but you could see the chemistry between the two in this game.
An interesting aside, is Jordan actually had good chemistry with Isaiah Thomas in the all-stars, when they were sort of getting along. Even when Isaiah was lobbing a pass to him, you still sensed there was an 'edge' to their relationship, though. Jordan shafted Isaiah with the Olympics, but, career-wise, Thomas elevated Jordan's game during the playoffs. Once Jordan got past the Pistons it unleashed a dynasty and Jordan knew he could get past anyone. Jordan and Isaiah never had their moment of 'reconciliation', which was too bad, because Isaiah deserved to be in the Olympics. Save for a bad call, in the Pistons first championship series against the Lakers, they would have had a 3-peat.
jaboo82681 Probably would have prolonged his career, as well. His body sort of warn down having to be 'the man' when Shaq left. He was better as a 'fellow superstar', rather then having to carry the team. He had it in him to do it, it's just his body couldn't handle the pounding. Would have been a perfect fit with the Bulls, as well...Some guys you just have good chemistry with on bball court.
jaboo82681 That's true! I felt the Bulls would have won in 99' if Jordan didn't retire. With Penny there, maybe the win in 00' as well and is that 'bridge', as you said...In his prime Penny was a great, versatile player who was a team player, who made his teammates better. You could tell Shaq MISSED Penny in a big way. Shaq's time with the Magic, was, in his view, his 'glory days'...even though he won championships elsewhere... The 90's where my favorite era in NBA history, but could have been even better if Shaq stays in Orlando, and CWebb plays a few more years with the Warriors...
@RealFan357 People were saying the same about the NBA during Jordan's reign, referencing a better league when Bird, Magic, etc were playing. These things go in cycles. With that said, I haven't seen a significant decline in kids talking about MJ's talent or impact on the game; in fact it's probably as high as ever in this day of youtube and such. MJ also recently was the cover of a popular videogame, which only helped.
MJ was booed because Shaq was playing in his home town (he played high school ball in S.A.) and fans thought he should have won...but Shaq got most of his points in garbage time. MJ said he offered to give Shaq the trophy, but Shaq said keep it.
KOBE= MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME... KOBE'S THREE RINGS= THANKS TO SHAQ... KOBES 5TH RING= THANKS TO PAU AND RON ARTEST... KOBES MOVES= THANKS TO ALL THE PLAYERS THAT HE COPIED FROM... ENOUGH SAID...
the only reason why mj didnt get mvp every single year is becuase the nba wanted some other ppl to shine..... which is f'really stupid and i think he got robbed in 97' cuz he made history that ASG
@glocsta707 michael jordan deserves the MVP with that sick ass assist btw lol.. but then shaq deserves the MVP for getting his free throw in this particular highlight lmao
@RealFan357 I think people were saying that when Jordan was playing, referencing Bird, Magic, etc. This thing goes in cycles. With that said, I don't really see a significant decline in the perception of Jordan's impact on the game or histalent; In fact I've seen a resurgence of Jordan appreciation in this day of youtube.
@glocsta707 reading all your comments i can tell you're a jordan hater. just because you hate jordan doesn't mean you should deny that he is the GOAT. I will admit I hate Kobe. But I won't deny that he is the greatest of this generation. YOU will find any excuse not to give credit where its due.
If you saw this game live, all you remembered at the end was that horrific dunk on Dave Robinson by Shaq. Legit felt bad for Dave for like 10 seconds until I remembered he's a millionaire 😂
@wornoutshoes11 Thank You!!! I've been trying to tell people all this time, obviously your a very smart man. I'm a so-called JORDAN LEGACY DEFENDER, you must be too.
um do you see how easy it was to go to the basket?? thats not only weak defense but the fact that he can pass threw the middle like that... u serious ? there was no zone defense back then the rules changed
kobe scored 81 against against one of the worst defensive teams that year. In the days of relaxed rules and softer defenses. Not against a team with 3 hall of famers. You can credit shaq as the driving force in three of those championships. If kobe scored 81 against the mavericks or played like Jordan would instead of getting swept, you might have a point, but you don't. ect ect etc
