The 3-pointer became only popular in the 90s when you think about it. NBA took it from the ABA in 1980 I believe, so it was more or less a gimmick back then. Todays player launch more 3-pointer per game than ever thanks to zone. Jordan could have perfected the shot as well if necessary. But when you already got the perfect mid-range game it's probably not your top priority.
Far as this series, you ain't gonna get far if you bring butter knives to a gun fight. And that's exactly what Jordan had around him. Jesus, this was EASILY the worst talent he ever had around him. Even his rookie year he had Orlando Woolridge. Other than Paxson and Oakley, two role players, you might be able to find better talent at the local YMCA.
I went to this game back when I was not even 7 years old. The Celtics were a great team, and their home court advantage at the old Garden was tremendous. They had won 76 of 77? Absolutely ridiculous. They would have won the title that year had Bill Walton not been hurt, and Larry and Magic would have won 4 titles each, when all was said and done.
Crazy how Walton went from a 6th man of the year to almost useless the next season. But I would definitely say there were 2 reasons that hurt the Celtics in this playoffs: The injuries/health issues of Mchale, Parish and Bird and the fatigue. Celtics had an easy series against the Bulls(in my opinion the worst team Jordan ever played in), but then had 2 really tough series against the Pistons and Bucks(2 games 7). Meanwhile the Lakers ran through the West, going 11-1 against much weaker teams.
@@davidschmidt227 The crazy thing for Walton was how he was healthy in 86. Coming off the bench obviously was a big factor, but he played in 80 games for the only time in his career. He went back to his injury plagued self the next season, playing only 10 games.
@@johncassani6780 Yeah, almost his entire career was injury riddled. Very talented player with a broken body. Shame we didn't get to see a healthy Celtics versus the 87 Lakers, it would have been the dream series.
Bron fans: MJ didn’t do anything before Pippen 😒 Bron fans also fail to mention or acknowledge MJ’s supporting cast, a HOF Celtics team he faced or the numbers he put up
Wow, what a rare game. Never seen any games from this series on youtube or otherwise. This was a "bad" playoff series for young/prime Jordan -- he "only" averaged 36/7/6/42% shooting. lol
Once Lebron gets a guy on his team with heart and a proven winner, like a Derek Fisher for example, he will get his title. The difference is MJ had heart with a bunch of trash he had for help. Plus MJ made his teammates better and instill confidence in them. Just ask Scottie Pippen. MJ made him a man. Bird also did the same for his team. Always came up with the clutch play whether a hoop or a steal.
Honesty? Not really. You just have to look to the 3pt stats. Im not saying he was the deadly shooter he was in his prime. But a big misconception about MJ (among many) is that he didnt have a jumper in his early years. Anyone saying that didnt watch his early years im sorry to say. About his 3pt shooting, Michael didnt shoot enough in his early years. You cant expect someone who shoots less than one 3 per game in his first years to have a stellar %.
And once again... The Boston Celtics win. No wait, sweep Jordan and the Bulls out of the playoffs for the 2nd straight year. When the Celtics were healthy, Jordan couldn't beat them. Or the Pistons for that matter.
Idiotic comment. One great player with average teammates (paxson and Oakley had heart above anything else, but solid) can't beat four hall of famers. Every great player needs something to work with. And the Celtics were an anomaly. There hasn't been a team since who were gifted so many talented players in such short time. Peace
@@brucescott4261 thats not the point, great players and team play will beat great individual players. Jordan was always a competitor even in losing situations and thats why he is regarded as one of the best or the best to play basketball, cause from an individual standpoint he was very skillful, but the teams knew how to play him which was doubling micheal before he got to the baseline or having at least two guys guarding the post when he beat his man. The only problem jordan had in those days is that he developed being a ball hog due to absence of talent he had around him. You ask any of his teamates and they would tell you that he pushed them aggressively in practice but jordan wouldnt tolerate low level playing, it just sucks that the bulls front office did not want to draft more high pick players and build a better team around him until the late 80s when phil came into play. That will always be my reasoning on why jordan couldnt dominate or be used at his full potential in the 80s.
Collins wants to keep the Celtics under 30 in the first quarter thats amazing since we now have to have all kinds of rule changes nowadays to get teams to have like 45 by halftime. It's a shame what the Bad Boy Pistons & the Knicks of the 90s did to the game by taking away the up & down flow there was in the 80s and then adding that style to todays players who cant shoot a midrange jumper and we now have a boring games to watch.
Probably correct which just proves my point. We needed rules changes to get scoring back up, to get rid of the physical bs which is not basketball and becuz guys just cant shoot.Remeber teams in the 80s didnt take more than 3-4 3s per game and scored just as much if not more. But in the 80s good TEAMS,not players shot 49-51% from the field.MJ shot well above 50% for his first 6 out of 8 years and .497 for his career.Show me a 2 guard with %'s like that.Kobe Lebrick & Wade arent even close.
MJ actuallyy had a rough series (for him), the celtics really focused on doubleteaming him and making the other bulls beat him at all times, kind-of like the hawks did to the heat and dwayne wade in this years playoffs (for you youngsters) MJ only shot 41% for the series (35ppg tho) once MJ got help and teams couldnt do that to him though other teams were screwed (kind of like how they are with lebron and the cavs or kobe and the lakers of now, but screwed even harder)
Lebron vs Bird. IMO Bird is still the better player. Forget that he had a better team for a second. Bird got a lot of steals. A prime Bird was a better rebounder, as good if not better court vision, smarter player, a winner not a quitter and much more clutch. Bird and MJ maximized their gifts. MJ had more athletic gifts hence why he was the better player than Bird. Bird made the most with zero God given gifts. Lebron can't say the same yet. He is still an underachiever at this point.
It's not that I dont like defense but what the Pistons and Knicks with their physical play was bullshit and not basketball. The difference is that in the 80's defense was important but when you got beat in the 80s you didnt commit a stupid non needed foul you took the ball out of bounds and pushed it up court trying to score the defense got set.But in the 90s the game slowed down with free throws and half court offenses because of the physicality. Teams had to do that becuz they werent very good
First off lebrick, kobe and wade have never shot 50% in for a season forget 53-54 like MJ. In the 80s the 3 was new so teams didnt take alot of them and still scored alot becuz of good passing, moving w/o the ball and pushing the ball upcourt.Defense isnt better today w/ the zone, it is much harder to play man to man.Go watch MJ,Dumars,Alvin Robertson,Maurice Cheeks play defense and you will have a different opinion.Players today are better ATHLETES on a whole but not better basketball players.
Larry had a better series than MJ did and the celtics won 3-0 but thats only because the bulls couldnt double-team Bird(his teammates would KILL YOU if you even TRIED that too much, like todays lakers kill you if you double kobe) like the celtics could TRIPLEteam Jordan (his teammates sucked, like dwyane wade's teammates did this past year, they were that bad (for the youngsters, explanation)
So ur saying you would take Lebrick at SF over Larry Bird, Julius Erving & Dominque Wilkins? Sorry he is not better than them or more athletic. They wouldnt just dominate becuz there wasnt a zone D. You play zone when you arent able to guard teams man to man. It much easier to guard an area than have to fight thru screens and having to keep moving ur feet. It takes much more skill than u think. Have u ever watched John Stocken and Marc Price in the 80s go off of 4 pics just to get 1 step free?
Becuz its not, Basketball is supposed to e a non-contact sport which is stated in every bball rule book. The pushing shoving and throwing of people is not basketball, its ugly and boring to watch. Who the hell wants to watch free throws all day? It has nothing to do with being soft. Anyt 7 foot thug can just push, bump and hack people, it takes skill to play real defense same as it takes real skill to shoot a midrange J which has become a lost art
Lebron is Better to You , becouse you are her fan, as KB24 thin that Kobe are GOAT...is is funny,.. Becouse everybody knows that top five is: 1.Jordan 2.Wilt 3.Magic 4.Larry 5.Kareem Lebron, Kobe, and every body in today's low NBA ,.. You may compare with Dominique,.. But still i thin Wilkins would beat Lebron and Kobe, becouse he was quicker and More athletical
