Here is Jordan's first NBA game against Kobe Bryant. A very memorable game, with an amazing Bulls comeback, plus plenty of excitement.
This game was played on December 17, 1996.
Enjoy.

I remember this game. Absolutely amazing. Jordan scored 30, Pip scored 35, and Kukoc had 31. I don't know how many times there have been teammates who scored 30-30-30, but this is the only time I remember seeing it. The Bulls let the Lakers know that you guys may be the team of tomorrow, but we're still the team of today.

+Tom Mattson Bulls generally had a hard time against the Lakers. An older team generally has a harder time against a more physical team. But if they played in the playoffs, the Bulls would have spanked the Lakers much like the way Utah did, who didn't do that well as well against the Lakers in the regular season.

+at1212 b . This was the '96 Bulls whose record just got broken, 20 years later, by Golden State. The Bulls went on to win 6 championships from starting in '96. The '96 Lakers were not getting passed the Bulls no matter how tough they were.
@at1212b

MrSupernova111 Hmm, this was the 96-97 Bulls Team (69 win). They were on their way for 5 championships that season. They won their first in the 1990-91 season. The 95-96 team, Kobe wasn't in the NBA and Shaq was with the Magic.

Everything Jordan did to kobe he absorbed and remembered and added to his arsenal for later use. Kobe was the ideal student. In some cases he seemed to invite certain scenarios just to see, up close, how Jordan would handle it. Kobe is one of the Great minds in the history of the game. And he took advantage of having access to the NBA God that is Michael Jordan.

Oh give me a break. I know Im not going get a reply from a three year old comment. But theres nothing that was ever reported, admitted or said in any way shape or form that Kobe had never seen anything like it in his life. You homers guys are seriously delusional. I happen to have this game. Kobe went at Jordan whenever he got the chance which wasn't often Due to stubborn Del and the rest of the old school NBA being hardcore about their seniority back in those days before the influx of high schoolers and taking shit slow. That was his mistake. Kobe was NOT in awe as you'd like to believe. Seriously you guys treat Jordan as if hes Jesus. Btw the officiating in this game was HORRENDOUS and grossly one sided (90s status quo: Jordan must win because MJ was making NBA a global product. which had some truth to it but i digress). Campbell was getting assaulted by longley (not literally but you get my point) while he was getting ticky tack and phantom calls. Even Hubie Brown the commenter was pointing it out (this was before NBA sent memo to evry organization and media that they werent allowed to talk about bad officiating on tv anymore).

@@drlight6677 Yeah Kobe may have thrown up some airballs at the end of that playoff game against the Jazz but i remember thinking it took guts for a 18 year old to take those shots in a playoff game when the other guys on the Lakers wouldn't. I knew then that this kid was going to be good and he would soon be making those shots in crunch time as he got more experience. Even at that age you can tell the players who want the ball when it counts and those who don't. You can't teach that.

jack mehoff LOL Rodman is one of the greatest rebounders of all time. You clearly must be 10 years old to not know or acknowledge how valuable he was to the team. Not to mention his clever tenacity. He has broken many records in rebounding throughout his career. The man was a defensive legend. Plus, 17 rebounds means he denied between 34 to 51 points to the other team and helped his own team score up to a potential of 51 (assuming they shot and scored only 3's from each of his rebounds). You're a special kind of stupid son.

When Kobe started playing in 1996: -Super Nintendo/N64/Genesis/PS1 were still being sold in stores just look at NBA Live 97 which has Kobe in it. -Bill Clinton was president -Internet was not yet mainstream while being extremely common today -The 1980s ended only 7 years earlier -Michael Jordan was well on his way to his second three peat -Most of the popular NBA analyst you see today were still playing then -No one knew that so many of the players drafted in 96 would go on to define the NBA in the 2000s -Wayne Gretzky was still in the NHL -The steroid era hung over the MLB like a dark cloud even though the popularity continued to climb -Biggie Smalls was still alive -Tupac's death was still fresh on everyone's mind -Boy Bands were "infecting" the world -Grunge era was still alive but was hit hard by Kurt Cobain's death years earlier -Y2K was near and people were thinking the world was going to end soon -WWE was still called the WWF -WCW/ECW still existed -Pokemon was still new around this time and went on to become a global juggernaut a couple of years later -Cellphone's were still not completely practical even though pagers/beepers were on their way out -Tube TV's dominated the market -VHS/VCR's dominated the market - Jnco Jeans :) There's more things but fast forward to today and Kobe is one of the few guys left from that era still playing along with guys like Kevin Garnet/Tim Duncan/Dirk Nowitzski. I'm sure there's a few others but it's going to be a sad day when those guys retire because it really will be the end of an era. I'm just happy I got to see all of these guys in their prime throughout their careers and they were able to get ring(s).

What an epic game with many epic moments: Van-exel hitting everything. Kukoc getting on fire. At 05:03 referee slips and falls. At 06:35 this is how you construct a wall. Back then it was called defense. At 08:25 Jordan speeds-up to guard his man, but slips, and yet, he made Jones lose the ball delaying the last shot and making them miss. At 10:00 Absolutely no helping the other team. At 11:22 Pippen and Jordan intelligently stopping Rodman to avoid a technical. At 11:48 some random angry fan how probably call-in sick the next day of work. At the end Rodman got 18 rebounds and just 2 very important points.

I remember this game. I thought for sure LAL would win. Tony Kukoc was the hero of this game and the reason they won. Despite the title of the video, MJ struggled and Kobe wasn't a factor as he played less than 10 mins. Van Exel was a killer in this game. Pippen had a great game. Kukoc already mentioned. MJ got his points. Rodman had 18 boards and could still defend Shaq.

I agree. The Bulls would easily beat the warriors. It would go no more than a 6 game series. Only one team was better than the 96 Bulls. That was the 87 Lakers. And I am not a Lakers fan. I am a bay area fan. I live in the bay area but I was fortunate to have seen those teams from the 90s and 80s. My top 5 teams of all time. Number 5 the 89 Pistons. Number 4 the 83 Sixers. Number 3 the 86 Celtics. Number 2 the 96 Bulls. Number 1 the 87 Lakers. Those teams were more rounded. They were good in every aspect of the game. They didn't live and die on 3s. They were a lot better on the defensive end. They didn't take plays off. Especially the bad boy of Detroit. I watched Jordan pay his dues against those piston teams before he got his rings.

+Scott Freebass #beats Maybe but Reggie Miller's Pacers and Patrick Ewing's Knicks both pushed these Bulls to 7 hard games. I think the Ws are better than both those teams so I think it would be a close series. I would tend to lean towards the Bulls but I think obliterate it way overdoing it.
@ScottFreebass
@ScottFreebass 8 лет назад
Don't get me wrong this Warriors team is good. But I don't see Curry doing too well against Pippen and Jordan. They would take it personally and make the game a nightmare for Steph. Plus Rodman will cancel out Draymond.
@j-r-m7775
@j-r-m7775 8 лет назад
Scott Freebass #beats Again I'm not saying the Bulls wouldn't win but Rodman would not "cancel out" Draymond. He's a great defender but Dray would still get his. I think the Ws bench is better than Chicago's. But yes I agree the perimeter defense that Jordan Pip and Harper could play plus Mike's scoring ability would be a monumental challenge for the Ws. But then again not many people thought Detroit(Chauncey, Rip, Wallacex2) could beat the Lake show and Detroits mollywhopped the Lakers. My heart's with the Ws(been a fan for over 20 years) but my head's with da Bulls.

Yeah I know that he's a rookie on this but actually I am impressed with how MJ played like those kinds of quick moves to the basket that kobe hasn't. Although kobe is better in terms of 3 point shots than MJ but overall I can still judge their biggest difference because MJ can carry his team to a championship unlike kobe when shaq left from the lakers in exchange for odom they didnt even entered the playoffs. They needed some star big men like pau gasol which I think was one of the reasons for getting his 4th and 5th championship. Otherwise he couldnt able to win a ring without a star big men. The bulls won their championships without a star big men not because of MJ and Pip can dominate their game but they also make their teamates play much better on defense and offense.

Kobe was a champ straight out of high school and The Shaq attack threw a good block to win the championship. MJ always had an excellent shot it was a close game.

Rodman making free throws late game and Kobe misses . Didn't even remember this.

A lot of people also don't remember during a playoff game vs Knicks Rodman drove down the lane and kicked out to Bill Wennington for the game winner. And all the Kobetards forget that late in games Shaq was actually clutch when it came to free throws. They have this myth that in the 4th Shaq always sat out and Kobe took over by himself.

Slick Nick was a beast even putting Cinci in the mix back when ACC n Big 10 had college on lock. So many story lines in this game all the way to Rumeal Robinson

I saw this game live. It was basically MJ, Pippen, Randy Brown, Toni Kukoc, Phil Jackson and the ghost of Artis Gilmore all against Nick Van Exel..... and Van Exel almost pulled it off.

this is what I call basketball. Big time rebounds by Rodman, Big time 3-pointers by Kukoc. Breath taking intensity in the 2nd half. Jordan and Pipppen delivered as usual but it was Tony and Rodman helped save the game. Lakers had a very strong lineup but the whole team was still too young. Really miss the good old days when players really fought!

Unreal. Eddie Jones. Misses both clutch free throws up by 3. in overtime, down by 2 gets the rebound tosses up a brick.
