This is a defensive movie project showing us how MJ was good and dominant in defense.
Everybody knows his offensive skills but he was so great defensively too.
There is some rare footages from 1984/85 and 1992/93 seasons in this mix.....enjoy

Looking back at these games and how hard defense was played and how physical it was reminds me why I just can’t get in to the modern day game as much as I want to

Jordan was just vicious. He wasn’t happy to just drop 38 on you. He had to destroy you defensively. And he did it, every night, every game, even the snoozers in February against the bottom feeders. He never took a night off.

Jordan went absolute beast for the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons when he posted 125 and 131 blocks respectively for the seasons while averaging 1.5 and 1.6 BPG for the same. One of the main reasons why Jordan was so great at everything was because he never backed down from anything, ever. Jordan always tried to be consistent with his block shots which were impressive throughout his career and that is why he has the highest number of blocks as a guard at 893 and a career average of 0.8 BPG. This crazy high number is not going anywhere far from the number one spot, at least for now

What I remember most growing up in Chicago watching these teams was the relentless defensive pressure the Bulls would apply if they were down, particularly if they were down big. And that did happen sometimes. Jordan and Pippen (who was a spectacular defender) would press in the frontcourt and stay on the other team like their lives depended on it. The comeback rarely started with offense, but rather with pressure that translated into layups on the other end and panic / chaos for the other team. Rodman too was excellent at this because of his athleticism and will to defend, although it wasn't as freakish as in his Piston days. The entire team got the joke - defense wins and the commitment to it can keep you in any game, even if the offense is flat or Jordan was having one of his rare off shooting nights. All of those guys, starting with Jordan, were capable of contributing to wins or even dominating a game in ways that had nothing to do with scoring.

Agreed. I recall a regular season game against Orlando in 97. Magic had 72 points at the half. Jordan was "off" that night... and they were down by 22 at one point in the 3rd quarter. They ended up winning by 5 or 6 in OT. Kukoc saved their butts, though. Not Jordan. Point being that they held the Magic to about 50 points in the 2nd half. Defense was nuts in the 2nd half. They won 121 - 126 I think

The quick hands and anticipation by MJ are superb. But, what impresses me the most about his defense, is that he is rarely out of position, always pressuring the ballhandler, or, chasing his man running around the halfcourt. His footwork, is second to none. And he always follows the principle of making the offensive player make the first move. Just flawless. 😁👍👊

You kids know why MJ is called the GOAT? He played BOTH sides of the ball and played them relentlessly. I'm not even talking about his stats, his awards, his rings, his accolades, his dunks, his highlights, his athleticism, or his moves. I'm talking about MJ's mentality, his drive, and his will to power. On the hardwood, MJ was psychotically focused; he was demonic; he was more vicious than a honey badger, and he will take on God and win. That's what makes MJ the GOAT. Do you kids understand now?

Honey badger! Lol! Great analogy! That was one of his uniques attributes that get ignored by many. MJ had and still has this incredible energy level that b all accounts, is unmatched by anyone in any sport or in life in general. It's what Isiah Thomas said was the reason for MJ 3peating while him and Magic succumbed to injuries. His frenetic energy on both offense and defense was crazy to see - I always say he played like a human pogo stick in his first 9 years - a fundamentally sound pogo stick. I understand the Kawhi comparison because Kawhi has orthodox defensive mechanics and fundamentals like MJ (no doubt he studied MJ video extensively), but he simply does not stack up. He's bigger than MJ but doesn't have MJ's foot speed and incredible energy levels. There was a series of plays in the '92 Knicks vs Bulls series where MJ scored at the hoop after splitting defenders, stole the outlet pass like a football player, got stripped by X-Man and MJ chased him down and stripped him back at the basket. You have to watch it to believe it as it was just incredible. This sequence defines him perfectly and especially in terms of defense - never quit.

Look up the game of the 92 Olympics when Jordan and Pippen combined made it their goal to shut down Toni Kukoc the best player in Europe that was drafted by the Bulls GM Jerry Krause that they both hated the GM. They shut him down to the point he scored 0 points had 0 assists in the game. The thing about Jordan was he could drop 50 even 60 on you if he had to then also shut your best player down also all game long. Then throw in Pippen that could drop 40 a night if he had to plus do the same on Defense then for their second 3 peat run they added Rodman the human eraser of the board and also one of the best defensive players of all time. There was a reason why the Bulls of the Mid 90's were called the Dobermans of Defense.

Pippen was drafted in '87 (along w/Horace Grant) In Pippen's first season and almost half of his second season, Scottie came OFF THE BENCH and he only averaged about 7 POINTS PER GAME! Grant didn't do much better. Scottie didn't start becoming a star until the 89-90 season. And He didn't became a grown-up and Superstar until the 90-91 season, the year the Bulls won their first title, and, consequently, the same year he guarded Magic in the finals. #truestory

Mike was probably the best conditioned athlete ever. In big games he would play about 42min & overall was playing in the high 30's a game for his career. This is when players played as hard on defense as offense. Watch some regular season games in the 80's & 90's against top competition & you'll see guys so winded, holding their shorts & gasping for air during a free throw. That's because they sprinted back on defense & ran around multiple screens every time down the flow. The game was less iso & more movement. Today there is very little defense & mostly 3 point shooting. You could play all 48 minutes now & not put in the physical effort these guys back in the day did in 20 min of play.

Modern day players superstars simply would struggle against Jordan, because Jordan would not only crush you on offense, he then added insult to injury and would also make your life hell while on defense. Player nowadays don't have to worry about hand check, but if they did, it would change them completely, and someone like Jordan with those massive powerful hands would dominate so easily any of these no contact players. Modern players are no longer playing the full game of basketball, they are only playing offense. Defensively they are no longer able to play physically like they should and used to. That is why Jordan is the goat, he dominated in an era where defense was at its peak. Now it it non existent. Being dominant offensively nowadays has no meaning or significance. Anyone can do it. There is no challenge anymore.
@boogieloo1831
@boogieloo1831 7 лет назад
Thank You - exactly. Hand checking and all the related physical defense is huge - it changes the game. Not only can you do much less, can't use a fancy handle and are under duress shooting but it tires you out - not only being defended but having to defend. These things don't happen today which is why I don't understand guys like LBJ crying about fatigue. You used to see guys including MJ tired at the start of the 4th quarter but he would find a way. Today is much more of a skills demonstration on offense. If MJ played today, it would be unbelievable with no true physical defense - he could do whatever he wants. It wouldn't be fair.

Jordan was ruthless on defense for a 6'6 guard the guy was too much all around.. Even as he was widing down in his career with Chicago... He was still totally awesome on Defense,and offense... Yes he would have much fun in today's NBA! Yes yes it happens to be that one had to edit. I see mistake that I did not catch at first,so then I must correct it if I can catch the error. That way my point can be understandable to the reader a little better as a pose to if I did not edit..

Got beat a couple times by the first step. Still able to make up and get the block or swipe the ball away. That’s speed, agility, bball IQ. Who else can match that and also be so dominant on offense consistently? 🐐

He might have let some of those guys go by him on purpose. I used to do it when I still had hops. If I knew the guy didn't have hops. I would lay back and wait to take the ball for an easy turnover.

If MJ didn’t play any defense ever, he would still be the GOAT but whoever is second would be pretty close. Thats how much of a beast he was on offense. But because he also gave 110% on defense too, arguably the greatest or one of the greatest defensive players of all time, it puts him way way way ahead of whoever is second in the GOAT conversation, which isn’t Leflop. Nobody comes close. Its also why he has as great a case as Muhammad Ali for being the GOATS of not only their sports but also of ALL sports and ALL athletes.

+Jay TS "your seeing some of the [greatest] basketball being [played now]" Oh really? Then why are the ratings CONSISTENTLY much LOWER than they were in the mid 80s and 90s? Here I'll show you why: "With the implementation of the [new rules], it has [now] become [more difficult] for [defenders] to defend [penetration], cover the entire floor on [defensive rotations], and [recover to the shooters]. This has provided [more time] for shooters to ready themselves for [better] quality shots. Another important feature is the [defensive 3-second rule], which has resulted in a [less congested] lane area. And as a [direct result] of this, ball handlers are [now] getting [more opportunities] at the [rim], due to [more] dribble penetration. Additionally, teams [also realize] that this has [made] the 3-point shot a great competitive equalizer. Because they're [now] able to [take] and [make more] of them at a [higher] and [more efficient] rate." -- Stu Jackson; Exec VP of Basketball Operations: "Rules changes have freed shooters, allowed offenses to soar"; By John Hareas, NBA.com April 10, 2009 Here you have the VP of NBA Operations telling you guys, just how much more EASIER the new rules have made it for perimeter guys to operate in this era. And he should know, because he helped design and implement 'em. Whenever you have pt guards (not Bigs), leading the league in pts scored IN THE PAINT (like Tony Parker did for 3 years straight), then you know you have a soft ass game these days LOL!! It's just time for you millennials to face facts: your era = WWE basketball

The thing that this video doesn't show and that was so awesome about Jordan is how he slow rolled the opposition by letting them get shots off he knew they had a poor chance of making so later they would still be confident enough to shoot instead of pass the ball. Then at a crucial point in a game when they needed points they think they have a easy 2 and they'd shoot or drive the lane and Mike would swat the ball into the 10th row and they'd be like holy crap how did he do that and for the rest of the game they're thinking 'where's Mike?? where's Mike??' and they aren't concentrating on what they're supposed to be doing. This was Jordan getting in their heads and it always worked.
