Kobe was just as good or very close to it, they just didn't let him get the playing time yet. Lakers were a good team, but Malone was a beast, which is Utah made it to the finals and was so good, along with Stockton, lakers had no chance. So realistically they likely would have done even worse 4 years later. They would have never made it to the bulls. No one was beating the bulls until MJ was done with them anyway, that included Utah, watch the finals of 98. The dominance Jordan exhibited was unreal, Kobe knew this, everyone did. Jordan was a little older by this point, but still the MVP and above Kobes or Shaqs level at any time.
