In a 2020 interview, Michael Keaton revealed he was really nervous and self conscious about working with Jack Nicholson, because he's so strong on film and had so much power, and it ended up just being great because Nicholson made everybody feel really, really, relaxed. They ended up becoming close friends.
Source? Keaton has said on numerous talk shows he wasn't nervous at all working with Nicholson on the film because they met beforehand and minutes into their first dinner it was clear he wasn't some diva asshole but a good acting partner.

Your statement about the order of actors' names in the credits has nothing to do with the original comment, namely, in that moment at 2:07 we can tell that Jack respects Michael. Whether he respected him before or after, and to what degree, is irrelevant.
@@Picnicl My suitability to those roles has again no relevance to the original discussion, although it seems you too would be unfit for the roles given how much you have managed to convolute a simple conversation. Unfortunately, you appear to believe humans are only ever capable of feeling one emotion at any given time. Even if Jack insisted on being credited first, which one may argue was well within his rights as an accomplished actor at that time, it would not directly translate to a sign of disrespect to Keaton. Even if it did, what he says and how he behaviours here - which was what the original comment was in response to - has absolutely no bearing on how he feels towards him at that time. You have no evidence to support any "underlying intent" that Jack has for acting how he does. I understand what you're trying to say, but i'm afraid it's weak and baseless, and certainly not worth continuing. Good day.
@@BedlamsBluff Jack was the star of the movie ...I love Keaton's Batman he's the best but the movie could have been called the Joker as alot of people said back in 89 .
"All you gotta do is tell me no, baby", what a great line by Keaton. It really seems like all the doubters and naysayers really just helped to fuel his epic performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne. So it's definitely appropriate of him to thank them all.
Fully agree, I loved that he said that. Almost seemed like Jack egged him on a bit, I wonder what he whispered to him. FFWD to his Pennsylvania election ad, Michael Keaton Douglas was a scrappy little kid which you had to be in a big family or in a tough neighborhood. Tell him he can't do something. That's what happened to me and I am the highest paid and educated person in my family. Boom.

@@Ben-pd2bx absolutely shit all over Michael’s version, I liked keatons Batman but he’s literally got nothing on Pattinsons Bruce now. Pattinson is by far the best Batman, because his portrayal is actually true to the comics.
I love the fact that Keaton finished his speech off by basically saying F you to all the people that went too far with their distaste of him being hired for the role 2 years before.
I love how Jack Nicholson reminds Michael Keaton to blast the bastards who said he couldn’t do Batman justice. Keaton was and is the only Bruce Wayne/Batman that exists.
Curiosity: he is the only Bruce Wayne. All other Batmen have the comic book accurate character of being Batman rather than Bruce as the real persona, but Keaton's real persona is Bruce.

I love how Keaton mentions the pissed off fans that wrote him letters saying your gunna suck and don't be batman, back out. BUT guess what! MICHAEL KEATON PROVED all those mad fans WRONG! I remember the car ride home from the theaters when my dad took me to see the 89 batman. I was so amazed by what I saw, i pretended I was riding home in the batmobile and the joker was chasing us. Easily my favorite movie. 2nd is T2
Saw it for the very first time at a little thing most youngsters don't know about called a drive-in movie theater. You ever heard of those kids? Well, it was a fan-darn-tastic time, and Batman never looked better on the big screen. In fact, I saw the first three Batman films all at the theater, two at the drive-in (the Burton films) and the third at the traditional theater (Schumacher's crappy but serviceable film).
The first 2 Batman movies from Tim Burton and Michael Keaton will forever be in my top movie lists of all time. I agree with a comment made earlier about the re-watch ability those 2 films have. The nostalgia is there of course but Tim Burton really does transport you to a different world in those films and IMO the best films out there are the ones that are fantastical / escapism. Nolan/ Bale films were amazing but I just don't watch them as much as I do the Burton ones. Plus Keaton's easily my favorite live action version of Batman and I doubt that will ever change.
Agreed. I just re-watched all the Batman films (starting with Batman: The Movie (1966,) and was curious what happened after Batman Returns. To summarise my research: McDonald's pulled the Batman Returns toys from their tie-in because Catwoman was too provocative and the Penguin was too scary with black goo coming out of his mouth. That made Warner Bros. lose their shit because they were focused on merchandising and blamed Tim Burton for Batman Returns not making as money as they'd hoped (almost $100 million less than Batman), so told Tim Burton to step down as Director for the 3rd film but stay on as Producer. Joel Schumacher took the Director's chair with instructions to make it lighter and more family friendly than the Burton movies. Then Michael Keaton, already upset about Tim being sidelined, read the script, said "it sucks," and bailed. Val Kilmer was cast as an emergency replacement. In Batman Forever we were introduced to bright lights, black lights and neon, with everything feeling more toy-like and silly. It took $22 million more than Batman Returns at the Box Office. Then Tim Burton bailed completely. Val Kilmer was already booked for filming The Saint, so couldn't come back. George Clooney was cast, with Schumacher remaining the director. In Batman & Robin, Warner Bros. returned the superhero genre back to the camp nonsense Keaton and Burton had worked so hard to recover it from, and the Dark Knight was once again a joke. It took around $55 million less than Batman Returns and killed the franchise.
I love those two movies with all I have. But I was "Returns" was shot in the same set as Batman. It has a different feel to it, and the first movie is my favorite. Perhaps the movie I've watched the most times in my life.
That was the point that even Tim Burton said. If Michael went out on the street as himself, you wouldn't go 'uh-oh'. He looks like type of guy who would need to dress up as a bat for effect.

@@godphoenix66x I always viewed Burton's take on Batman as somewhat supernatural. This "average joe" unassuming guy doesn't look like he could fight his way out of a wet paper bag, but once he flips that switch and becomes Batman, he can kick a man across a roof and through a door. Hell, he picks up Jack Napier, flat footed, like he's picking up a bag of feathers.
No other Batman will ever beat the hype we lived in 1989 when this movie was released. The film, the merchandising, the news...and of course, the Batdance.
Keaton's batman will always be top! He had been my favorite actor since 1979 working stiffs. I found out the night batman was playing on The big screen..... My baby girl was coming in 8 months! I was so happy that night!
@@willcastro3805 no doubt. Keaton did stand up before, is naturally funny and had done a lot of comedies before doing Batman. Not to mention he did Beatle Juice and I'm actually shocked that Burton did not pick him up to play The Joker.
I love how Nicholson looks so zoned out during Keaton's speech. But in all seriousness, they were both brilliant in their roles, the defining Batman and Joker for me(yes, I'll see the Dark Knight at some point).
I was born 2 years after the Batman movie was released and i hearing those letters protesting and questioning Michael Keaton's ability got me curious. Idk man he did a great job he's the perfect Batman tbh and that speech, i thought it was empowering. Wow
I'm thinking about Keaton thanking the haters and them sending hate mail pretty much. You know how much energy it took back in those days to do that. Actually writing a letter. Seal it in an envelope. Then take it to the post office and buy a stamp and then mail it...... because some guy got cast in a role.

Say what you will about Burton vs Nolan, at the end of the day no one has come close to Keaton's Batman. In 30 years no one has done the Dark Knight better.

There is so much work that goes into achieving a cohesive style that the first batman pulls off. The first is still the best in my mind for the sheer fact that nothing really is like it.
Keaton and Nicholson made what Bale and Ledger did possible! Heck, we can include Conroy and Hamill in there, while we're at it. I wish that some of the characters such as Rachel Dawes were created earlier, though. I would've loved her to supplant Veronica Vreeland in "Batman:TAS". I appreciate Tim Burton for the 1989 film. Without him, we'd never see Batman they way we do now. At least not in motion photography.
I think Tim Burton was the best when it came to Batman. The comics are very dark, creepy, daring, and fun. and tim Burton has that style. I like the new ones, but they got nothing on the original. Also, Michael Keaton made a great Bruce Wayne. Had that swave and mystery to him.
