I'm a current recovering alcoholic. His speech at the end of Dopesick had an impact on me on how I see addiction. When I first watched it, I was in tears because of how much it related to my current struggle. Thank you to Michael Keaton for being vulnerable to us and all involved in that project. You all touched more lives than you know.
I too am a recovering alcoholic, and his speech at the end really sums up what is happening with us, and gives a great perspective on how to deal with it. Congrats to you on your recovery.
It means more when it truly hits home. He basically said, “money leads to addiction, poverty leads to addiction, this is a crap situation where all parties are effected” in other words it was a bridge between the classes. Because there is a HUGE divide. But if we try to help each other we help it to get better overall. Good job Michael, I am proud of you
He said what needed to be said. He addressed the elephant in the room. We might be entering another WAR and yet here we are (Hollywood) handing out aWARds. However, as human beings for tonight, we can use the distraction. Made sure the viewers around the world know, we do have our priorities in order. Even actors have lost a loved one during this pandemic 😷
distractions are ignorant, and coming from a rich person like him it really has a bitter flavor. don’t get me wrong we all love keaton but most ppl are extremely ignorant and it only gets worse with events like these (breads and circuses)
You know, I laugh at those who say they hate Hollywood for these award shows, when in reality, every single industry has their own kind of awards in their own way, they're just not all broadcast on tv. But the top producers in every industry make a ton of money and pat themselves on the back just as much as hollywood. In fact, there's thousands who work in Hollywood who don't make a ton of money and do it because they like it.
Michael, you’ve had some wonderful performances over your career. Remarkable career. You make all Montour Spartans proud. Continue your brilliant career, you’ve never ever forgot where you came from. This speech left me in tears. I too have seen the ravages of addiction in my own family and can completely empathize with your heart felt feelings. Thank you so much for being a kind, simple, genuine and fun guy from Pittsburgh!
God. That was beyond heartbreaking. I am just now watching the series Dopesick and didn’t know about Michael’s nephew until recently. His performance means even more now, knowing how addiction affected his life and family. I am a recovering addict and can’t help but sometimes be extremely critical of how the subject of addiction is depicted on TV or movies. I feel that Dopesick did an exceptional job in its portrayal of addiction, as well as the greed associated with Big Pharma.
all the feels! I have always loved him as an actor, and I have soo much incredible respect for his candor, but especially honesty and compassion for others. What a beautiful human, and I truly hope he finds solace and healing for his broken heart.
Wonder if Michael Keaton will ever run for President?? Honestly, no sarcastic remark here, I think he would do a great job as a leader of this country!
my son died thanksgiving eve. He was given an opioid for a knee injury. That was the end of our child. Thank you Mr. Keaton for showing how this starts and ends for really fine people. Dope Sick is the kind of film that will and has changed the attitude about addiction
On behalf of the hundreds of thousands who have lost their battle, thank you Michael Keaton for giving them a voice. Prayers for your nephew Michael. Charles mom 4vr25
You could feel Michael Keaton's pain when he was trying to honor his nephew. It was pretty pathetic that some of his fellow actors were laughing as Keaton got so emotional talking about the loss of his nephew.
Has never phoned-in a performance. Always excellent in every role he does, be it comedy, drama, or action thriller ('The Protege' was his latest masterpiece in acting).
I couldn't stop watching Dopesick. It made me sad to see the suffering. It infuriated me how out politicians and the FDA did nothing to stop it. Our country is dopesick.
Great speech! Also nice for him to give a shout out to President Zelensky whose leading Ukraine. The rest of his speech was extremely touching and beautiful.
I love how people talk about financial inequality are the riches people out there. If you care so much about people being financially equal then give your money away to people who need it or shut the fuck up. If you make 1 million dollars then find 19 families and give them 50k a year and keep 50k for your self or shut the fuck up. Stop screaming about how the world is unequal when you yourself hold a huge piece of the pie.
Michael Keaton has been very generous to the yinzer community. Many actors have charities they support. Always some selfish folks. And why can't millionaires talk about financial inequality?? Only poor folks can??
His performance on the show was impeccable. His heart was in it and it showed through. Rest In Peace to his Nephew Michael. May this award and the meaning behind it bring some peace to the Keaton family.
100% correct. I reached 9 months sober today. But I could FEEL every bit of his pain when he dedicated that award to his Nephew who wasn't as lucky as me. He reminds me of my Brother. You NEVER get over how someone who was destroyed by drugs was full of so much light, energy and love. Drugs is like your inner sun being blocked out. 11 years this year. That's 11 years James could've and should've had on this Earth. We MUST have the discussion and not just treat drug addicts as bad people and beyond help. Because their lives mean so much. We must do what we can to prevent their sun from being blocked out forever.
@@davidaston5773 well said sir, and congratulations on your victory and getting this far. Keep up the good fight, and my best wishes to you and your family
Well said! Very lovely and touching to read. May his nephew rest in peace and Keaton and his family gain some peace and perspective. Can't imagine the pain he must be feeling
@@brandonguindon1056 Thank you so much. Such kind words. I will fight to improve even further and never take my sobriety for granted. I love it. Life is never going to be perfect but I'd rather be imperfect than fake. And to you to. Have a great weekend and much love.
Loved this speech!! I had the amazing pleasure to meet Michael just a few days ago in Glasgow, and can honestly say he’s one of the kindest, most down to earth celebrities I’ve ever met. Absolute legend
Just a reminder that you've got this friend!! I know the world is a mess and that can make some of us fall back into old habits, but you're doing great!! I promise it gets easier. 💜
I understand how you feel. I was addicted also. A lot of my family members still don't understand. I have the book Dopesick .I'm so glad that the series Dopesick was made so maybe more people will understand addiction. Michael Keaton was fantastic in Dopesick and he deserves all the best actor awards this year.
I lost my son to addiction. To the people that judge him and all of the 104,000 people lost in the last 12 months alone, this can happen to anyone's family, regardless of social status. Don't judge until you have walked in these shoes.
I am so sorry for your family, but I am in admiration of your strength. It is never easy. I have not had these issues but I can only imagine, and I am so proud of you and give you lots of love ❤️
There is no GREATER PAIN than the loss of your child. There are no words of comfort, they don't exist. Tears & prayers for your precious son. I am so sorry you know this unimaginable & unbearable pain. You are correct, those who judge have not walked these shoes, their ignorance is staggering. However, no one should know this pain. Prayers sweet mama. Charles mom 4vr25
Beetlejuice was so long ago that I always forget that he played that character. Everytime I remember Michael K . played Beetlejuice I realize what a great actor he really is. He can play so many different characters. Does anyone remember Night Shift? That movie was on cable(when there was only cable-no Hulu,Roku, etc.) when I was 13 or so.
@@LindaC616 He worked in a morgue with a character played by Henry Winkler. Michael K. called them "love brokers" instead of pimps and they ran an escort service out of the morgue bc they worked nights. It was a comedy😊
@@mindyengledow6860 lol, sure as heck hope so! Yes, it's coming back to me now. I loved (still do) Beetlejuice. His goofy humor in that reminds me of my oldest brother
I'm so glad to see Dopesick get award recognition. As someone who grew up in a rural Ozark town where opioid addiction runs rampant, who has watched close family members become completely different people due to prescription medication abuse, and who has watched the closest families fall apart under the strain of addiction, Dopesick was such an important series for me. I saw my town, I saw my family, I saw my friends. I was reminded of the fact that people profited from this tragedy, that people made money from killing my classmate and from turning my cousin, someone I had basically idolized as a small child, into a person I don't even recognize. However, it also reminded me that there are people who genuinely care and people who are working to hold folks accountable and to actually do some real help.
Thank you Mr Keaton for helping to bring this story to us. Many of us living through the fallout of what the Sacklers did for profit with oxycodone and so many others have died. Our hearts are broken and lives ruined. God bless you for bringing this to light.
They didn't know he was gonna do that. Sometimes with Keaton you don't know if a joke is coming or not especially with his mannerisms. They definitely weren't laughing at the subject
This was the most genuine speech I have ever heard from pompous Hollywood. It didn’t seem rehearsed that much. He sounded a little buzz in his voice but the alcohol can totally bring out the truth in a good ways if it’s in check
Everyone is always out for themselves, but sometimes you stop to think. I believe this was one of those moments. Whether or not it stands the rest of time will tell, but it seems like he meant it from the heart, and that is good
Have always liked and admired this man. Excellent actor, humble and has always had his priorities in order. Kudos to a deserved win and touche for an OUTSTANDING speech.
His best performance to date, in my opinion. Birdman was a good second. This speech was among the best. He's self-aware in that he knows how fortunate he is to do what he does. But still is a human to has human feelings.
